Routine, careful examination of patients for oral and pharyngeal cancer, in addition to an updated health history, can easily be achieved during a regular dental visit. The stage at which an oral or pharyngeal cancer is diagnosed is critical to the course of the disease. When detected at its earliest stage, these cancers are more easily treated.

Facts About Oral Cancer

Incidence and Mortality

Oral and pharyngeal cancer strikes an estimated 39,000 Americans each year. An estimated 8,000 people die of these cancers annually.

The disease occurs more than twice as often in men as in women.

An estimated 1 in 92 adults will be diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer in their lifetime.

The median age at diagnosis is 62 years.

Risk Factors

Tobacco use

Alcohol consumption

Heavy use of tobacco and alcohol together greatly increases your risk of developing cancer

Age: the risk greatly increases after 44 years

Gender: men are twice as likely to develop oral and pharyngeal cancer

Ultraviolet (UV) light exposure is a particular risk factor for lip cancer

Nutrition: a diet rich in vegetables and fruits is associated with a lower incidence of oral and pharyngeal cancer

Signs and Symptoms

Leukoplakia, which are thick, whitish-color patches that form on the inside of the cheeks, gums or tongue, these patches are caused by excess cell growth and are common among tobacco users. They can result from irritations such as an ill-fitting denture or the habit of chewing on the inside of the cheek.

Patients may complain of: difficulty chewing or swallowing, or moving the jaw or tongue; a sore throat or feeling that something is caught in the throat; numbness; hoarseness or a change in the voice.

Signs and symptoms that persist for two weeks or more merit further investigation, such as a biopsy or referral to a specialist.

Simple Tricks to Make Spring Cleaning Easier

Here’s an easy breakfast recipe that you can start the night before!

French Toast Soufflé

Ingredients:

- 1 bakery loaf of butter crusty bread-10 cups cut into 1-inch cubes - 8 oz. cream cheese, softened - 8 large eggs - 1-1/2 cups milk - 2/3 cup half and half cream - 1-1/4 cups maple syrup - 1/2 teaspoon vanilla - 2 tablespoons powdered sugar

Directions:

1. Place bread cubes in a lightly greased 9x13 baking pan.

2. In a large bowl, beat cream cheese with an electric mixer until smooth. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in milk, half and half, 1/2 cup of the maple syrup, and vanilla until mixture is smooth. Pour cream cheese mixture over the bread; cover, and refrigerate overnight.

3. Remove souffle from refrigerator, and let stand at room temperature for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

4. Bake uncovered, for 50 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Pour remaining 3/4 cup maple syrup over souffle, and sprinkle with powdered sugar. Serve warm.

How does Invisalign®

work? Invisalign® takes a modern approach to straightening teeth,

using a custom-made series of aligners created for you and only you. These aligner trays are made of smooth, comfortable and virtually invisible plastic that you wear over your teeth.

Wearing the aligners will gradually and gently shift your teeth into place, based on the exact movements your dentist or orthodontist plans out for you. There are no metal brackets to attach and no wires to tighten. You just pop in a new set of aligners approximately every two weeks, until your treatment is complete. You’ll achieve a great smile with little interference in your daily life. The best part about the whole process is that most people won't even know you're straightening your teeth.

Please check out our website, www.ForestViewDental.com, for more information. Click on the Our Services section and then on Invisalign®. Or just ask your Forest View Dentist if Invisalign® is right for you!
