DO AND DON’TS

DO Make sure the spa is connected to a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI)protected circuit. This GFCI is required by the National Electrical Code (NEC). andmust be installed by licensed electrician. Test the GFCI monthly.

DO Test the water with your hand before entering the spa to be sure it is comfortable.

DO Remember that wet surfaces can be slippery. Take care when entering and exitingthe spa. Only enter by way of the steps in the spa. Do not step on spa edges orfilter lids.

DO Use the thermal cover when the spa is not in use, empty or full.

DO Take steps to prevent the intrusion of sand and dirt into the spa.

DO Maintain proper water chemistry.

DO Clean the filter cartridge weekly.

DON’T Use the spa for long periods of time at temperatures over 104ºF.

DON’T Operate the spa without water. Turn the circuit breaker off before emptying thespa and while it is empty.

DON’T Store chemicals in the spa’s equipment compartment.

DON’T Open the electrical box. There are no user serviceable parts inside.

DON’T Operate the pump(s) on hi-speed for extended periods of time with the cover on.Extended hi-speed pump operation will cause a slow heat build-up due to waterfriction, which could trip the spa’s hi-limit thermostat.

B. Since excessive water temperatureshave a high potential for causing fetaldamage during the early months ofpregnancy, pregnant or possiblypregnant women should limit spatemperature to 38 degrees C (100 F).

C. Before entering a spa, the user shouldmeasure the water temperature withan accurate thermometer, since thetolerances of water temperatureregulating devices vary.

D. The use of alcohol, drugs, ormedication, before or during spause, may lead to unconsciousnesswith the possibility of drowning.

E. Persons suffering from obesity or witha medical history of heart disease, lowor high blood pressure, circulationsystem problems, or diabetes, shouldconsult a physician before using a spa.

WARNINGS

Prolonged immersion in water that is warmer than normal body temperature can result in adangerous condition known as HYPERTHERMIA. The causes, symptoms, and effects ofhyperthermia may be described as follows: Hyperthermia occurs when the internaltemperature of the body reaches a level several degrees above the normal body temperatureof 98.6 degrees F. The symptoms of hyperthermia include dizziness, fainting, drowsiness, lethargy, and an increase in the internal temperature of the body. The effects of hyperthermiainclude (1) unawareness of impending hazard, (2) failure to perceive heat, (3) failure torecognize the need to exit the spa, (4) physical inability to exit the spa, (5) fetal damage inpregnant women, and (6) unconsciousness resulting in a danger of drowning.

WARNING – The use of alcohol, drugs, or medication can greatly increase the risk of fatalhyperthermia in spas. Persons taking medications that induce drowsiness such astranquilizers, antihistamines or anticoagulants should not use the spa. Pregnant women andpersons with a medical history of heart disease, circulatory problems, diabetes or high bloodpressure should consult their physician before using the spa.

Children are especially sensitive to hot water. At no time should children have unsupervisedaccess to the spa. The use of elevated decking may encourage children to climb onto thethermal cover – IT IS NOT DESIGNED AS A SAFETY OR CHILD RESISTANT COVER!

Every Vita Spa comes with a thermal cover which is provided with locking straps. Install thelocks for your child’s safety.

JET OPERATIONYour Vita Spa is designed with a unique jet system to allow you to select a wide variety ofmassage patterns. The following is a description of the various types of jets and theiroperation you may use to tailor your spa to your specific massage needs.

(A) THREE WAY POWERDIVERTER VALVE

The Power Diverter Valve allows water tobe diverted to a zone of jets or to theTurbo jet exclusively, or to bothcombined. Turning the valve to the left, water will be diverted to “A” jet(s) givingthat zone the maximum output. Rotatingthe valve to the right will give “B” jet(s)the maximum output. When turned tothe center, both “A” and “B” will operatesimultaneously

(B) TURBO MASSAGE JET

With the Power Diverter Valve turned to“A” or “B” depending on the spa model, the water will be delivered exclusively tothe Turbo Massage Jet. The Turbomassage therapy is great for working outthose hard-to-relieve muscleknots and tocreate swirling whirlpool effect in the spa.The Turbo Massage jet pressure can beadjusted by rotating the Power DiverterValve between “A” and “B” positions.

(C) DIRECTIONAL AND ROTATIONAL MASSAGE JETS

When the pump(s) is on and the Turbo massage jet is in the off position, the DirectionalQuad jets and Rotational Therapy jets will be operational. The nozzle of the DirectionalQuad jets can be adjusted to direct the flow to specific part of your body. The Rotationaljets provide a “swirling” type therapy. The water pressure can be adjusted in both jets byrotating the outer rim of the jet clockwise for minimum pressure and counter clockwise formaximum pressure. Water pressure can also be varied by opening or closing the air control.

FILTER MAINTENANCE

Vita Spas are designed with the mostefficient top loading filtration system inthe industry. Filter maintenance is themost critical factor in keeping your spawater clean.

TO CLEAN THE FILTER:(NOTE: Never run the spa without a filter installed)

Remove the cartridge and spray it with agarden hose. It will be necessary to rotatethe cartridge while spraying so as tothoroughly remove the debris lodgedbetween the filter pleats.

After allowing to dry, inspect the cartridgefor calcium deposit (scaling) or an oilfilm. Rapid mineral build-up from hardwater, or oil build-up from the use of oil-based water scent or body oil may coatthe filter cartridge. A filter cleaner to soakthe cartridge is available from your VitaSpa dealer and should be used as part ofyour spa maintenance. Use a rag toremove any debris at the bottom of thefilter housing and inside the filter screen.Replace the cartridge in the filter housing. We recommend the use of a spare filter. This way one can be soaking andcleaning while you continue to enjoy theuse of your spa.

DRAINING YOUR SPA

Detergent residues from bathing suits aswell as soap film from your body may

gradually accumulate in the water. Foaminhibitors will suppress the foam but willnot remove the soap from the water.Eventually, the soap build-up in the waterwill concentrate enough to leave anunclean feeling on the user’s skin, causing sudsing and make the waterimpossible to clarify. Depending on theamount of soap input, the spa watershould last between two and threemonths.

TO DRAIN YOUR SPA

Turn the power off at the GFCI breaker.Attach a garden hose to the bib locatedin the base directly below the spacontrol. Pull out the cover cap from thebase and unscrew it from the bib. Routethe outlet of the hose to an appropriatedraining area. The spa will empty bygravity. Siphon or scoop out the balanceof the water.

IMPORTANT: Spa water with a highsanitizer level may harm plants and grass. If you are draining your spa for the winter,be sure to fully drain water from the pipeby disconnecting the two unions at thegate valves found by each of the twospeed pumps and the two unions foundby the circulation pump. Drain the waterpumps by removing the pump plug. Then reinstall the pump plugs. Removethe filter and clean as required. Inspectthe spa shell and clean as required.

Refill the spa BEFORE restoring power to it.

SPA MAINTENANCE

Your Vita Spa is manufactured with the highest quality and most durablematerials available. A spa care and maintenance program is recommended toincrease your comfort, maintain the spa’s reliability, and protect your investment.

WINTERIZING YOUR SPA

Your Vita Spa has been designed andengineered for year-round use in anyclimate. If the spa will not be used, drainit completely, following the instructionson “DRAINING THE SPA.”If you intend touse the spa during the winter, keep thespa covered to prevent heat loss.

NATURAL REDWOOD

Although your spa came stained from thefactory, exposure to wind, rain and sun willcause the wood to weather. Much like anypiece of furniture, if your spa came withnatural redwood, you will be required topreserve it from time to time (suggestedminimum of two times per year). Your VitaSpa is treated with a specially formulated“water-based” stain and sealer. This sealercan be obtained through your local Vita Spadealer. DO NOT USE URETHANE ORPOLYESTER COATINGS that will prevent thewood from its need for natural moisturizing.

EXCEL-PLUS CABINET MAINTENANCE

The exterior of your Vita Spa cabinet ismade from a newly formulated highstrength material that is factory stained andsealed. Depending on the location andexposure of the spa to nature’s elements, itis recommended that you clean the cabinetonce or twice a year with warm water anda mild soap.

COVER MAINTENANCE

Your cover is manufactured from adurable marine grade, UV resistantmaterial. Even so, monthly cleaning andperiodic conditioning is recommended tomaintain its beauty. To clean andcondition the vinyl cover: Lightly spraythe cover with a garden hose to rinse it

and remove the debris. Using a largesponge or soft cloth and a mild soapsolution (1 teaspoon dish washing liquidwith 2 gallons of water), scrub lightly incircular motion. Then rinse it thoroughlywith plenty of water. Condition the vinylafter cleaning by applying a thin film ofvinyl conditioner. NOTE: To remove treesaps, use lighter fluid (not charcoal lighterbut the kind used in cigarette lighters). Use sparingly and rinse with mild soapsolution afterwards. Wipe dry.

CARE OF ACRYLIC SURFACE

To maintain the surface of your spa, simply clean with a soft damp cloth (amild detergent is okay) or with any glasscleaner. DO NOT clean the surface withany type of abrasive as it will dull thesurface and natural luster of the acrylic.DO NOT use any type of oil basedsolvent. Such products can be veryharmful to the surface of the spa and willvoid the surface warranty of the spa.

CARE OF SPA PILLOWS

The spa pillows will provide years ofcomfort if treated with care. Each pillowhas been positioned above the waterlevel to minimize the bleaching effects ofchlorinated water and other spa waterchemicals. It is recommended thatpillows be removed and cleaned eachtime the spa itself is cleaned. A mild soapand warm water works best in removingbody oils. ALWAYS rinse the pillows offthoroughly after applying any type ofsoap to assure that no residue remains. Ifyou are winterizing your spa or do notplan on using it for a while, it is best toremove the pillows until the next use.Pillows should always be removedwhenever the spa is beingsuperchlorinated.

WATER QUALITY AND MAINTENANCE

GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR WATERQUALITY MAINTENANCE

Maintaining water quality within specificlimits will enhance your enjoyment andprolong the life of the spa. Safe, comfortableand clean spa water is a fairly simple task toachieve, but it does require attentionbecause of the numerous factors that canalter it. There is no one formula to befollowed because of the variables, i.e. qualityof the water used to fill the spa, watertemperature, user load, etc. For specificguidelines for water quality maintenance, consult your Vita Spa dealer who can assistyou to develop a program based on yourspecific needs. Disregard for watermaintenance will result in poor soakingconditions, damage your spa investment, and possibly void your warranty.

SPA WATER MAINTENANCECONSISTS OF THREE SEPARATE,EASILY DEVELOPED PROGRAMS:Sanitizing and maintaining a safe level of sanitizer in the spa water. Balancing thepH and maintaining the recommendedmineral content level. Achieving andmaintaining water clarity.

SANITIZINGTo destroy bacteria and organic compoundsin the spa water, a sanitizer must be usedregularly. The use of ozone as an oxidizerhas proven to be an effective method tohelp maintain water cleanliness, but aresidual chemical sanitizer such asbromine, the most common sanitizer used

in spas, must be used in conjunction withozone. Do not drop bromine tabletsdirectly in the spa. The use of a floater isrequired to dispense safely and properlythe right amount of bromine in the spawater. A bromine residual of 2 to 3 PPM isgenerally considered desirable. A two-partbromine system or granular chlorine(Dichlor) are also acceptable sanitizers.

pH CONTROLpH is a measure of acidity and alkalinityof the spa water. The recommended pHfor spa water is 7.4 to 7.6 PPM. Below7.0 (considered neutral), the spa water isacidic and can cause damage to theheating system. Above 7.8 the water istoo alkaline and can result in cloudywater and scale formation on the spashell, heater and cover.

IMPORTANT: NEVER USE CHLORINETABLETS (TRICHLOR) IN YOUR SPA.This chemical can have an extremelycorrosive effect on certain materials inthe spa. Also, the use of liquids, chlorineor acid, are not recommended. Damagecaused by use of any chemical, is notcovered under the spa warranty.

IMPORTANT WATER MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES

DAILY

3 days a week

Check water level. Keep water above bottom of skimmer doorand a minimum of 1” above highest jet.

Check and adjust chlorine level to 1.0 to 3.0 ppmif chlorine is used as sanitizer. If Sparkle Clear is used, check weekly.

WEEKLY

Once a week

Test the spa water using 3-way water test strips

Adjust pH and total alkalinity. pH: 7.4 to 7.6 (ideal 7.6).

Total Alkalinity: 80 to 120 ppm

Maintain 1.0 to 3.0 ppm bromine or free chlorine.

Add 1 ounce of additive, such as “Spa Defender,” toprevent calcium build-up.

Calcium hardness: 120 to 250 ppm.

Spray filter element to remove loose particles.

MONTHLY

Four to sixweeks

Two to threemonths

Inspect and clean the spa filter cartridge. It isimportant to maintain your spa filter cartridge and keep itclean and free of particles which can restrict water flow. Ifthe filter is not cleaned on a regular basis, the filter may clogand restrict water flow, which causes improper filtration andpoor jet performance. See “Filter Cleaning” instructions.

Drain your spa. Follow the procedures outlined in“Draining Your Spa” page 21 and clean it following theprocedures on page 22. When refilling your spa, be sure tofollow the procedures outlined in “Balancing Your SpaWater” on the next page.

Water treatment is an important factor inthe enjoyment of your Vita Spa. Properwater sanitation is essential to yourhealth as well as permitting years oftrouble-free use of your spa. The mostcommon water chemistry problems thatcan damage your spa are:

1. Improper pH maintenance. pHbalance is critical to proper watermaintenance. Too low of a pH levelwill result in corrosion of the spa’scomponents.

2. Not pre-dissolving chemicals beforeadding to the water.

3. Use of improper chemicals.

4. Over chlorinization. Sodium dichlor isthe recommended type of sanitizer.Sodium dichlor dissolves easily andhas a neutral pH, which minimizesthe effect that the addition of asanitizer has on a pH balance. Trichlorcompounds are not recommendedbecause they have a very low pH,and are very potent and difficult todissolve.

BALANCING YOUR SPA WATERThe instructions below will assist youwith balancing the spa water for the firsttime. You will need the following items tobalance your spa water.

1. “3-WAY TEST STRIPS”

2. “PH-UP” and”PH-DOWN” for pH control.

3. “MINERAL SURFACE PROTECTOR” forCalcium and Scale control.

4. “METAL INHIBITOR” for breakdown ofmineral deposits.

5. “POTASSIUM PEROXY MONOSULFATE”for shock treatment.

6. “BROMINE” or “CHLORINE” forsanitizing the spa water.

5. After the alkalinity is properlyadjusted, the pH is next. If the pH isabove 7.8, use PH-DOWN (1 oz. at atime) to lower it to the acceptablerange. It is extremely important toNEVER allow the pH of your spawater to be under 7.0, as this canseverely damage your equipmentand will void the warranty.

6. Add Sanitizer, either chlorine orbromine. For Chlorine: Follow thedirections on the bottle. Chlorinedissolves rapidly; you should get areading on the test strip withinminutes of application. For Bromine:Follow the directions on your floatingbrominator. It is necessary to addsodium bromine only when the spais being filled. Bromine tablets erodeslowly, and it may take several hoursbefore you will get a reading on thetest strip. It may be necessary toadjust the floating brominator.

7. To properly maintain the chemicalbalance of your spa, follow the 3 daya week program outlined on pages27 and 29.

Please read “WATER MAINTENANCE”then follow these easy steps:

1. Fill your spa until the water level is 1inch above the highest jet. It is NOTadvisable to use softened water inyour spa, as may become corrosive.

2. Add a 1/2 pint of Spa Metal Inhibitorto prevent iron or copper depositsfrom staining the finish of your spa. Ifyour water is known to contain highconcentrations of these metals it maybe necessary to add an additionalquantity of Spa Metal Inhibitor.

3. Use a 3-Way Spa Water Test Strip ortest kit to measure the pH andAlkalinity of your water. The followinginstructions utilize test strips for testing.Immerse the test strip in the spa water, following the instructions on the teststrip container label. Compare the stripto the label to determine the conditionof the spa water.

4. If the Alkalinity is not within theacceptable range (80 to 120 ppm) itshould be adjusted first. If it is low, raise the alkalinity by adding PH-UP 1oz. at a time, retesting until thealkalinity reaches 120 ppm. If thealkalinity is high, it should be loweredby using PH-DOWN 1oz. at a time.
