WHY SHOULD I PLAY GAMES?
Whether you are playing a board game or cards with fellow resident, or in your apartment on your phone, computer or tablet, playing games is great for seniors!
1. Improved Fine Motor Skills and Coordination. Shuffling, dealing and holding cards,
moving game pieces or touching the screen or keyboard, is all good for seniors.
2. Enhanced Emotional Well-Being. People who have fun are happier and healthier than
those who don’t—it’s as simple as that! Doing things you enjoy, improves your emotional health regardless of whether it is playing BING, going for a walk, or chatting with friends. SO it’s no surprise that seniors who enjoy playing games find themselves in better moods.
3. Increased Cognitive Ability. Playing games will engage the mind in different ways and can
even alter the brain’s neutral network. Things that are new can provide novel ways of thinking and problem solving. Paper games (Crossword puzzles, Sudoku, and word searches), are also good ways to keep your mind young and active.
Don’t know where to start? IF you need suggestions for computer games to download , talk to the other residents or your kids to see what games they enjoy playing. If nothing else, download a solitaire game. Not only are there dozens of different types of games to play, but you can customize the background and the cards to make it more enjoyable. PLUS...you don’t have to shuffle! The computer does it for you! Nancy, Amanda or Mark can show you how to download games to your computer of phone.
As for games here at The Lakeside Village, we only ask that you show up on time, use hand sanitizer, keep your mask on, and only 4 (maximum) per table. We play Sequence, Dominoes, Rummikub and several card games. We are willing to teach anyone how to play! If there is a game you like to play, and we currently are not playing it, please let Nancy know so the game can be purchased. -Golden Carers-

SELF CARE TIPS
Take care of your body and spirit. This is an extraordinarily trying time, and all of the tried-
and-true stress management strategies apply, such as eating healthy meals, getting plenty of sleep and meditating. Beyond that, here are some tips for practicing self-care in the face of the unique disruptions caused by COVID-19.
Be Kind to yourself. Go easy on yourself if you are experiencing more e=depressing or anxiety than usual. You are not alone. Ask Amanda, Kris or Julie about talk therapy.
Maintain a routine-as best you can. Get up in the morning at the same time. Get dressed. Eat your meals. Pick up your mail on a daily basis. Go to bed at the same time every night.
Take time out for activities you enjoy. Read a good book, watch a comedy, play a fun board game or video game. Come to the lobby to visit with other residents. (Please remember to wear your mask and sit 6 feet apart.)
Get out in nature. Sunshine and fresh air will do you good. Even a short walk out to the front garden can make you feel better. There are benches to sit on, so you can listen to the birds singing. Keep your distance from people you encounter who may be having a window visit with another resident. You can eat or visit with friends out on the deck.
Find ways to exercise. We will be able to have small groups to exercise together again starting soon. The fitness room is available (please wipe down the equipment before and after use). Walk the halls. Walk to the mailboxes.
Take up a relaxation practice. When stressors throw your nervous system out of balance, relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation and yoga can bring you back into a state of equilibrium. Regular practice delivers the greatest benefits, so see if you can set aside even a little time every day.
Stay positive. Think of things that make you happy. Even though smiling uses more muscles, it is believed that it takes less effort than frowning, and it’s hard to be sad or mad when you smile!
