Important Information

Emergencies can happen at any time and can affect us, our families and our community.

This brochure provides a snapshot of what you should do to plan, prepare and act in case of emergency. It’s important to plan; it could be your life-saver!

There are five important steps to help you in an emergency:

1. KNOWLEDGE

2. have a plan

4. safety & wellbeing

1. KNOWLEDGE

Know your risksIt is important to know what to do in an emergency. What are your risks? Fire, flood or heatwave? Know your area and be aware of your surrounds.

Managing stressPlanning ahead helps people stay safe and have less stress. For more information refer to Red Cross Rediplan available at www.redcross.org.au/prepare

Where would you go?How would you leave your property if needed? Know the best way out. What if it is blocked? Where would you go?

Learn from past experiences. What has worked and what didn’t? Talk to your neighbour.

WarningsKnow what is happening, when and where. In times of emergency, warnings are broadcast through radio ABC Central Victoria 91.1 FM. Prepare your home• Outdoors: Clear gutters, cut grass, trim trees and remove rubbish

• Indoors: Working air-conditioner, fans, close blinds

In an emergency, what is your plan?

Prepare an emergency kitWhat if you were cut off for two days? Include a list of important phone numbers and any medical conditions you have or medications you take.

Items to include in an emergency kit are:• Important documents such as

insurance, medical, bank details etc.• Photos• Pension information• Wills• Non-perishable food• Bottled water• Medication• Torch• Battery operated radio• Clothes

PetsIf you plan on taking pets, prepare an emergency kit for them as well.

This should include:• Bowl• Food• Blanket• Lead• Travel cage• Any medication

• Neighbourhood Safer Places, Places of Last Resort - Are to be considered a place of last resort in bushfire emergencies and only to be used when all else fails. For more information on your nearest Places of Last Resort visit www.saferplaces.cfa.vic.gov.au

• Hospital or medical clinic - It is important to know the location of your medical clinic or your nearest hospital.

• Cooler place - In periods of extreme heat, look for a location which can offer a cool place to escape the heat eg. shopping centre, movie cinema or library.
