Welcome to our final newsletter for Term 2, 2020. This term has certainly

been one for the record and history books. For the first five weeks we were

in @HomeLearning. We then introduced Prep and Year 1 back to school.

Then in week six, we all returned to school. It has been a great return to

school for everyone. We have truly shown as a community that we are

strong, resilient and persistent towards the goal of achieving great success.

I commend everyone for their fantastic efforts throughout this term.

Please see my key message below and on the next page.

Pyjama Day – Wednesday June 24

It is winter and the term is nearly over, so let’s have a Pyjama Day! All

students and staff are invited to wear their pyjamas to school on

Wednesday June 24. You may need a change of clothes for the afternoon,

as the weather gets warmer. Please ensure pyjamas are suitable for school

wear (good length and no inappropriate slogans/pictures etc.) A gold coin

donation is required from each student to participate in this day. Have fun

everyone!

Premier’s Reading Challenge – READ! READ! READ!

Agnes Water State School is participating in the 2020 Premier’s Reading Challenge

(PRC). Different student age groups have a varied number of reading goals. All

students are required to write their

completed books on to their

spreadsheet (received from the

school). All students who reach their

goal will be presented with a

certificate from the Premier in early

November. Here at Agnes Water

State School, we are also making the

amount of books read by students as

points to go towards points for their

Sports Houses (Sharks, Rays or Stingers). The winning team will receive a trophy

and plaque and we hope that this will be a yearly event, tied in with the Premier’s

Reading Challenge. The picture to the side shows Mrs Smith’s (Teacher Librarian)

display in the Library to monitor the points for each team. I will provide an

update on PRC House Points points each Friday during Parade.

Principal’s Messages Continued… New Car Park Construction Progress

On Wednesday June 17, I toured the

new car park construction area. It is

progressing very well. We are expecting

completion of this project early next

term (weather dependent). This area will

include increased capacity for parent

and staff car parking. We will also have a

bus drop off zone at the front of

Administration. Once we know when this

area will be open we will let you know.

Thank you to everyone for your patience

throughout this time as there have been

decreased parking, noise and extra

vehicles moving in and out of the school

zone.

Hand Washing @ School Importance

It is crucial that everyone who steps in to Agnes Water State

School washes their hands regularly. We ask parents/carers

and visitors to ensure they sanitise their hand upon entry to

our school. Students are encouraged to use hand sanitiser

and/or hand soap regularly throughout the day. This includes,

but is not limited to Washing/Sanitising:

- Upon entry to school grounds

- Before and after eating time

- After play time

- Entering/exiting different classrooms (including

specialist lessons)

- Before/After touching Physical Education Equipment

Virtual Skype Parades

Thank you to the parents/carers who have been joining our Skype Parades each Friday.

My office becomes a studio on Friday mornings as the School Captains and myself host

Parade in front of my computer, beaming out to all the classrooms throughout the

school. We think that this format of delivering Parade can stay in some way in to the

future. Congratulations to our School Captains for displaying great confidence with the

change of Parade delivery each week. This Friday (June 19) we are hosting Parade from

Ms Hartley’s room.

2020 Sports House Captains

Congratulations to the following Year 6 students who have been names Sports House Captains for 2020.

Head of Curriculum News

Spend at least ten wildly happy minutes a day

reading with your child! (Mem Fox) There are so many great books around to spread the message of making connections and having a positive mindset. One of these books (which can be found in BookClub) is called ‘I am Love’ and has a lovely story for both children and adults alike. So many chances can be found in reading together to build our bonds – not only does it foster a love of words and books, but can start a conversation about something in the story that they connect with. I have a copy to share, let me know if you would like to take a look. I would LOVE to hear of your family favourites too. Happy reading! Well-being at Agnes Water State School. We are proud of our commitment to the wellbeing of our students in our lovely school, and it is a practice woven into everything we do. You will find different elements of this on each class’s homework matrix, from teaching family members different yoga flows to using the free Smiling Mind app to settle before sleep. You will see it in each classroom during various times of the day, with teachers incorporating it into their health and art lessons, along with transitions after lunch breaks. If you are interested in learning about mindfulness or meditation, check out the Smiling Mind website, or the Wheel of Well-being. It is such a relevant and important aspect of our child’s development and there are some wonderful recourse in our community to support us. You can always chat with your child’s teacher about this, and even ask your child. Remember – the W Projects are encouraged to continue long beyond the time of COVID. What W Projects have you started in your family? My family has embarked on a 2000 piece puzzle – it will hopefully be finished by Christmas 2021! Please keep sharing. Academic Games – more than just fun! Our dedicated teachers are always keen to incorporate different teaching tools and ideas into their daily routines. What may look like a ‘game’ to an outsider looking in is so much more. Setting up Academic Games (such as Celebrity Heads using characters or scenes from novels) is a great way for us to review new knowledge and check for understanding. Students are engaged and energised because these games often involve movement and group work, using their collaborative knowledge to recall facts and concepts together. If they aren’t sure of a fact, or can’t remember it, hearing it from a peer reinforces their learning and gives them another chance to practice. Having fun in this way, while learning, means we are also more likely to retain our new knowledge. Developing Prediction Skills in Reading It has been excellent to see the great amounts of home reading happening in our school. Children really benefit so much from daily enjoyment of words and stories – and the key word is enjoyment. If your child is reluctant to read or engage with the book, try something else. Dig out some funny poems or read the footy section in the paper together. Once they see the pleasure that can come from reading – and the relevance – they will be more likely to attempt other books. A really great strategy for parents to reinforce at home is prediction. Before you start reading, have a chat about what they predict the story might be about. Think of possible words that may come up, and have a quick word hunt to see if you are right, use the pictures to help too. By developing prediction as a reading strategy they are building their contextual knowledge before they even start reading, and as a result, allowing for greater understanding – the main reason we read. This will set them up for success.

What will my child’s Report Card look like this semester? Our mid-year report cards are typically based on aspects of the Achievement Standard, rather than the full one - and this still remains true for Semester 1 2020. We collect evidence of student learning at different stages and we make judgements against the standards - this is the mark in your child’s report card. We also use this evidence to inform the next stage of our teaching and learning cycle. Due to the recent disruption to our usual style of learning, we are required to make adjustments to our usual style of reporting, in terms of timing and the range of Learning Areas we report on. Thank you for being involved in this decision via the link sent out in a recent survey. You would have also received an email last week with a letter attached explaining what the report cards will be like. If you have questions, please get in touch – and please be assured that you do not need to wait for formal reporting times to find out how your child is progressing, our teachers are always happy to have a chat. Feel free to send them an email and make a time to talk. Please know that in our line of sight at all times we have your children’s learning and well-being, and the delivery of the Australian Curriculum underpins everything we do. “Celebrate what you want to see more of.” Tom Peters I want to celebrate the dedication and hard work of Ms Karen Hartley, one of our Year 5/6 teachers. Ms Hartley has such a knack for connecting with her learners through her sense of humour and ability to relate to their interests. Her high expectation for student success means that every child in her class is striving to do their absolute best. She supports them in their student leadership journeys and could not have been happier when her class returned to school after week 5. Thanks Ms Hartley, for being such an important and supportive member of our team, we appreciate you! Keep looking for the opportunity and the good in these moments, and spread that with others. Tell your children when you feel grateful and why, tell them what has bought you joy and why you are proud. I am sending you and your families my absolute best. Take care. Please share the great things you see happening …email me at [email protected]. I look forward to hearing from you. Yours in Learning, Mrs Leigh Tankey

2/3JK – Jess Kleinschmidt In year 2/3JK, a lot has been achieved since our return to school. We have been busy writing imaginative

narratives, testing our reading levels, completing our maths tasks and many of us have enjoyed learning about

the elements of art. So far, we have learnt about perspective, line, shape and colour and used many different

techniques including oil pastels, fine point pens and paint. Below are photos of our Year 2’s and their line drawings

3/4MH – Michelle Hibbett Hi Parents and Caregivers,

What has Term 2 really been like? We started the term with at Home Learning, for FIVE whole weeks! Then due to the

Ms Hibbett’s health and the current situation, she had to stay home for a bit longer. We hope to see Ms Hibbett soon.

Here are a few thoughts on Learning at Home–

- Learning at Home was not what I expected. I missed all my friends and my school. I think Mum does not want to

do that ever again! By Sunny & Olivia.

- Home schooling was amazing because you could spend more time with your family. Home schooling was great,

but I think Mum would rather me at school! By Felix.

- Home schooling was fun! We went somewhere special in the bush one day and I took my schoolwork. I climbed a

tree and did some home schooling in the tree. My mum sat at the fire and relaxed. By Braith.

No street parade, no re-enactment for the 250 year anniversary of Captain Cook’s landing at Seventeen Seventy. Year 3/

4 did pause to think about it and we wrote an acrostic poem.

In Mathematics, we have been having fun with fractions. Our Fraction Wall has been very handy helping us to

understand fractions and arrange them in ascending and descending order.

On Celebration Day we will be watching a movie, (try guessing which one), playing party games with treats / prizes and

having some outdoor fun too!

Thanks for welcoming us into your class and working hard for the last five weeks.

Marg Crowther & Christina McKay.

4/5MG – Dawn Morton & Richard Gourlay Dear Parents/Guardians,

It has been an extremely busy time since students have come back from home learning. We have been working

hard on the core subjects with plenty of revision of the Australian Curriculum content happening. Students

have adapted well to the change of environment and we have been very impressed with the high level of

student engagement. We have been focussing on persuasive language features and the reading strategy of

inference this term, as their assessment will be on persuading tourists to visit Agnes Water. We have

specifically looked at how real estate agents use language to position the reader/viewer to think positively

about real estate listings. One activity involved students working in pairs to decipher what the real estate

advertisements really meant by looking at the use of inference to influence prospective buyers. Cooperative

learning where students work with a partner or in a small group to complete a clearly defined task is an

effective way to teach reading comprehension strategies. Cooperative learning groups provide opportunities

for peer support and are motivating for our students, as they know their work and ideas will be responded to.

Students did a great job of finding examples of inference. This is just one example of an activity that helps

students interact with text to become more active and engaged readers. Finally, in recognition of adhering to

our school rules, students will be rewarded with a class party involving a movie, party games/treats and

outside games on the last day of school.

It has been so wonderful to have our class back together again at school these past few weeks. We have all

enjoyed catching up with one another and continuing on our learning journey in the classroom with our

teachers, staff and classmates!!!

Check out our Freaky Photos! We have been developing our skills with media technologies to create mood

with lighting. Can you guess who we are?

Page 13: IMPORTANT DATES FROM THE PRINCIPAL Tim Loughland ......to build our bonds – not only does it foster a love of words and books, but can start a conversation about something in the

5/6H – Karen Hartley As reading continues to be our whole school focus 5/6H have been studying the novel Soul

Surfer by Bethany Hamilton. Each week we have a novel study meeting and discuss what we

have read in the past week. Students are expected to use a number of strategies to respond to

the text and must answer teacher questions as well as posing questions of their own. They

also identify interesting or unfamiliar vocabulary and figurative language. We are all really

enjoying this novel, what an inspiring story of a positive attitude and resilience.

Another way students have been practicing their reading is through the use of “Reader’s

Theatre” this helps with expression when reading. Now that we are nearing the end of term,

students are working on presenting some of these scripts as plays and are very enthusiastic.

This is also a great way to gain confidence and practice reading out loud as well as in front of

an audience.

Each day we warm up for

literacy with a ‘Key Into’ text.

Finding the answer requires

students to infer, reorganise

and/or evaluate. Try this one:

Reading occurs throughout the curriculum. These are just some of the MANY ways we practice!

Science - Donna Smith

Our Prep/1 classes and 1/2 ML have been observing changes around the school and classifying them as

natural changes, man-made changes or managed changes.

Our 2/3 students have been learning all about water, where it comes from and the journey it takes to get to

our taps at home, school and work. Here they are exploring what the school water looks like, sounds like,

feels like and taste like.

3/4MH and 4/5MG have been exploring ‘Beneath our feet’. They have been investigating soils, rocks and

landscapes and how they can change over time. Here they are planning for and investigating soil erosion.

The 5/6 classes have been investigating earthquake intensity and magnitude data from Australia and our

neighbouring countries. This week they have been working on assessment.

About Your P&C Association

The Agnes Water State School Parents and Citizens’ Association works with the school

principal, our school community and our wider Agnes/1770 community, to promote the

interests of the school, assist in the school’s development and improvement and ultimately

achieve the best possible outcomes for our students.

We provide feedback and advice on school policies and activities, help provide resources and

be involved in various school activities including, but not limited to fundraising, school

functions and tuckshop.

If there are only a small representation of parents and citizens in the P&C, we are not getting

the full view of the wider school community. We need members to provide feedback and

make balanced decisions that are fair and equitable for all and we need members to contribute

ideas and helping hands for the best outcome for our kids.

As a member, you do not need to turn up to every meeting, do lots of things and take on an

executive role – you can just contribute as much or as little as you can, but your opinion and

say on school matters is taken seriously and any help you can offer is valuable and appreciated.

Please consider joining up as a member. An application form is available from the

Administration Office. Meetings are held every 3rd Monday of the month – usually in the Staff

Room.

Hello and thank you for reading our new P & C segment in the

AWSS newsletter!

I’m Kerrie Jackson and you may have seen me around the

school this year wearing a big fishing hat, boots and sun safe

clothes as I am currently one of the relief Grounds staff at our

wonderful school. Other hats I wear are that of a Teacher

Aide, and I sometimes relieve in Administration.

I love gardening and producing the food we eat. Ever since we

moved to Mt Maria back in 2013 we have been trying to live

sustainably, and grow and produce our own food. It has been

Page 16: IMPORTANT DATES FROM THE PRINCIPAL Tim Loughland ......to build our bonds – not only does it foster a love of words and books, but can start a conversation about something in the

such a privilege to share this knowledge with our students and see them taste fresh, home

grown food from our school garden.

Our 2 children Riley (Yr 6) and Lottie (Yr 2) attend AWSS. Our weekends are spent

working at the farm and occasionally when the weather gods permit, we get to throw a crab

pot and a line in the Baffle, or 1770 creek……

I enjoy making a positive difference in our little community. Our P & C group is a very

motivated and committed crew of ladies working alongside the school to ensure our learning

environment is the best it can possibly be for our wonderful children, now and into the future.

I look forward to welcoming you to future meetings.

I've lived in Agnes Water for the past 9 Years with my husband and our

3 children, all have attended/attending Agnes Water State School. Many

of you might have seen me around – I’ve worked at the school since

2016 as a Teacher Aide and in the Office and I treasure the time I get

doing the job I love.

When I am not working, I love the beach, walking tracks and

snorkelling with my family and friends. I seem to be developing a love

for gardening and find it relaxing. I also love reading autobiographies as

I find people's lives and experiences fascinating and you can learn a lot

from others.

I joined the P&C this year to inject some new ideas and to represent our students and

community needs around the school environment. I'm very passionate about our P&C , our

Students and the Community and all the wonderful ideas we have going forward.

I am happy to chat to anyone about the P&C, so please talk to me about becoming a member.
