धातपाठः

Pāṇini developed the dhātupāṭha in the same pattern as hissūtrapāṭha. This dhātupāṭha is divided in to ten gaṇas accounting tototal 1944 dhātus. The figure is based on the siddhānta_kaumudīwritten by Bhattoji Dīkshita which was written much later after allthe ancient Pāṇinian dhātu-vrittis.

In fact, previously the accents were prevalent in the sūtrapāṭha aswell as the dhātupāṭha but unfortunately in the course of time thistradition was lost.

If this accent information is not given in the dhātus, difficulties arenoted during the computational generation of the dhāturūpas. Hencethe necessity to mark the accents in the dhātus.

Anubandhas in Pāṇinian dhātupāṭhas

Pāṇini used special markers, which he termed as 'it'. These 'it's were usedto code various kind of information into it that facilitated the triggeringof various sūtras which automated the process of word formation.

Information in accent

The accent indicates the case-marker.वाचः isआददातः, so it takes the second case suffix, plural form.वाचः is अनतोदातः, so it takes the fifth as well as sixth case suffix, singular form.

Gender determination through the accentरकषः isआददातः, so it is in the neuter gender.रकषः is अनतोदातः, thus it is in the masculine gender.

Sense disambiguation through the accentThis is supported by the mimamsakas too,"अथ तरसवयारदीना कथ समामनािमित ? उचयत अथारवबोधनाथर भिवषयित।(ज.स.भा.9/2/31)Why the necessity of three accents? Replied - for the betterunderstanding of the sense.

Introduction Accents and their importance Applicability of Accents Conclusion

For example-

इनदरशतरः, If we do not mark the accent, we have two possibilities-...1 इनदरसय शतरः (इनदरशतरः) is a tatpuruṣa compound"enemy of Indra"

...2 इनदरः शतरः यसय। (इनदरशतरः) is a bahuvrīhi compound"the one whose enemy is Indra"

But in order to get the exact sense, it is necessary to mark theaccent. Similarly in the case of-

होता also has two possible senses,...1 होता isआददातः, which means 'good summoner'....2 होता is अनतयोदातः, which means 'plain caller'.(तीवराथरतरमदातम अलपीयोऽथरतरमनदातम (िनरकम 4.25))
