Why do we catalog? Why do we classify? What aspects are important? What aspects can we let go of?

Is my system RDA compliant? Will my system take RDA records? Do I have to use RDA?

I already mentioned there is new terminology in RDA. Here you see some of the main concepts expressed in AACR2 and then in RDA. Some of the changes reflect turning away from the card catalog environment and some reflect terminology in the Functional Requirements models and the International Cataloguing Principles. During the training we will provide a handout with tables showing pre-RDA context and the RDA context for both bibliographic and authority data; that handout will show you some other vocabulary changes and the specific instructions where those concepts are addressed in RDA.

The FRBR conceptual model groups the things we want to identify for users just for the convenience of talking about them. I covered the conceptual models more in one of the Webcasts, but I think what’s most important here is that RDA states what things are important to identify in our bibliographic universe that is made up of all the things we want to identify for our users; things in our collections and things that in the past we made bibliographic and authority records for. Group 1 resources Group 2 parties that play some role in our bibliographic universe and Group 3 things that can be the subject or works (includes the Group 1 and Group 2 entities)

ICP “representation” principle • “Take what you see” • “Accept what you get”

– Example: Do not abbreviate words in transcribed fields

MARC 260: ABC Publishing Company – do not change to “ABC Pub. Co.”

MARC 250: Third revised edition – do not change to “3rd rev. ed.”

One of the RDA principles is based on the “representation” principle that was included in the 2009 Statement of International of Cataloguing Principles (ICP) from IFLA; it can be paraphrased as “take what you see and accept what you get.” The reason for this change is to encourage and facilitate the ability to take metadata from publishers or from digital objects being cataloged without having to change that data. There will be much less adjusting of information found on the resource or provided by publishers. One example of that representation principle is not to abbreviate or replace words found on resources.

Communication o Present RDA and FRBR vocabulary to your staff, in pieces, say 2-3

terms each meeting. Talk about them, what they mean and how they relate to your work

o Look at your mission and goals; think about how your practices relate to them and make use of that in your communications
