Implementing Moodle in the disability sector on a shoestring budget
CPL Academy
Introduction• About CPL Academy
• About CPL- Who we are- What we do
• About me
The Challenge• Definition of the challenge:The eventual delivery of cost-effective training for 1600 staff with a strict budget within
the disability sector.
• Analysis of the challenge:With the inevitable implementation of the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme),
reviews were done for training in an effort to improve the delivery time, increase efficiency and engagement; and to promote cost savings.
Where we are & what we’ve achieved
• We’re in the early stages of implementing eLearning & a consist LMS for CPL.
• First platform for all staff
• All internal compliance training online
• Custom front page & certificate
Things that cost $1000 (roughly)
Samsung 40” LED FHD TV
50ml of Clive Christian perfume
Jon Heder in Napoleon Dynamite… before it became a cult movie
Obstacles• Refresher training:
The way Moodle is currently setup (at least by default) does to not really cater for disability sector type training.
Solution: We had to look at how to adapt the uses of plugins to cater for our needs.
The Design• Considerations:• High number of new and infrequent users (+-16 new starters every two weeks)
with varying levels of education, varying types of work environments.
• Probably their first experience of any kind of Learning Management System.
• Accessed from multiple devices (PC, smart phone, iPad, etc).
Front page = $167

• Domain Registration = $24
• Charity discount = -$100
Web Hosting & Domain = $124
Extra CostsExternally created eLearning
Were paying $500 per year. Now $2000 to have forever.
Tips and Tricks• Sandbox:Highly recommended if your Moodle site is currently live.
Tips and Tricks• Freelance:Our goal was to have a continued working relationship with a single developer that
met our service delivery expectations.
• Analytics:We’ve setup both Piwik and Google Analytics to capture traffic data.
Conclusion and questions• Conclusion:
- That is our journey so far with Moodle.
- Future aspirations
