    Initial Occupation

    Human life in Nigeria is evident all the

    way back to 9000 bc. Many kingdomsand dominions existed in Nigeriabefore the British came and tookcontrol. The British came to stop theslave trade between the Sokoto-Jihadand the Yoruba tribes. Initially, slaveswere traded for goods such asgunpowder and guns, the Britishcame in and decided to trade palm oilinstead of slaves. Later though,people realized that slaves were stillnecessary to the trading of palm oil,and many tribal wars beganconsequently.

    Benefits to Imperial PowerBy taking over Nigeria,imperialists gained markets for

    their manufactured goods.They also gained theexploitation of raw minerals,materials, and food. The initialreason for going into Nigeria

    was goods. Over time, peoplewere converted, territory wasclaimed, and culture waschanged. All of these thingsthe British gained by going

    into Nigeria.

    Treatment of Indigenous People

    Indigenous people were slaves.Nobody thought highly of them,they were seen as less than. Theywere traded for the price ofadulterated liquor and stuffed in

    the bottom of cargo ships. Theywere stripped of everythingincluding self worth and anyremaining shreds of dignity. This iswhat the British felt about them.

    Timeline

    1851 The British burn Lagos and drive out slavers.

    1885 British Protectorate is established over the Coast of theNiger Districts.

    1914 North and South are united to create Nigeria with Lagosas the capitol.

    Between 1898 and 1945 there are a series of uprisings against

    British rule and poor living/working conditions. One of the mostfamous was the Aba Riot (Womens War) of 1929 protestagainst British taxation.

    1963- Independence from Great Britain. 1967-70 The Biafran War. Biafra tried unsuccessfully to secede

    from Nigeria.

    Biafran War

    The Biafran War, also knownas the Nigerian Civil war was apolitical conflict caused by theattempted seccession of thesoutheastern provinces ofNigeria as the self-proclaimedRepublic of Biafra. Theconflict was the result ofeconomic, ethnic, cultural and

    religious tensions among thevarious peoples of Nigeria.

    Indigenous Perspectives

    The people of Nigeria did notwant the British there at all.The British transformed theirentire culture because of theirgreed. Nigerians wanted nothingto do with the British andbecause of this they startedwars, and they migrated todifferent cultures.

    Sani Abacha

    General Sani Abacha was themilitary dictator of Nigeriafrom 17 November 1993 to 8June 1998. His goal was tobring civilian rule to Nigeria.

    His motives were doubtedbecause he didn't comeabout until after elevenyears of uninterruptedmilitary rule. He owned 3billion dollars worth offoreign assets.

    Resistance & Independence MovementsAfter the British took overNigeria, they faced many

    revolts and uproars inresistance to their penetration.Both the Yoruba and Igbotribes started wars against theBritish. The muslims migrated

    away from the infidels, andthe Ekumeku used non officialwars to attack the British.

    Benefits

    Along with Imperialism came

    many new things in Nigeria,they may seem good but theydisrupted the culture that wasin place so it cannot bedetermined whether or not

    these things arebeneficial. Nigeria now hadWestern Education,Christianity, the EnglishLanguage, new forms of money,

    new transportation methodsand communication.

    Cultural Imperialism

    Sixty percent of the people in

    Nigeria are now Christian asopposed to theirpreviously Islamic beliefs.Tribes were also separated by theEuropeans and this made

    borders. The national languagechanged to English due toBritish European reform.

    Britain had a lot of money when

    they took over Nigeria, theytook over to gain more money.They in fact got what theywanted and the consequenceswere mainly

    Consequences on Occupied Region

    The British influenced Nigeria so

    much that the impact willseemingly be seen forever.Nigeria still uses a military styleof government, learned from theBritish, and English is a major

    component in their language ofPidgin. It is widely believed thatall turmoil in Nigeria today can becontributed to the British.
