IIMPERIAL AND YOUR CAREER

mperial College is a goodplace to study and ourgraduates are highly sought-

after. As a result, they enjoy higher levels ofemployment and generally more responsiblejobs with above average salaries.

While many large national andinternational firms target our graduates(see ‘What do graduates from ImperialCollege do?’, page 6) some students alsostart their careers in smaller organisations. And Imperial College students aretargeted by firms that are active not just inscience and engineering. A wide spectrumof firms want to recruit our graduates.

Meeting employersEmployers contact us in many differentways. The first time you might noticethem is when you need a vacation job. Many advertise these through the CareersService and some participate in theinternship programme run by theCity & Guilds Union. The big firms startrecruiting for summer internships wellbefore Christmas so if you don’t keepyour eyes and ears open you will miss theopportunities.

Some invite students to presentationswhere they tell you about theirorganisation and career opportunities. These events, mostly in the autumn, maybe held on campus, in local hotels or on

the firm’s premises and they provide anopportunity to meet representatives –including recently recruited graduates. It’syour chance to discover what they do,something about their culture and whatthey enjoy about their work.

The Careers Fair is held in theStudents’ Union in early November.Different firms attend each day so youcan career window-shop by dropping inon more than 50 organisations. You candiscuss, seek answers to your questions,or simply pick up literature to read andanalyse at your leisure.

Workshops and coursesAnother way of getting close to employersis to attend the skills workshops held onWednesday afternoons. Employers like

giving these because they attract proactivepeople who are keen on self-improvement. You develop importantskills such as presenting or negotiatingand, by making contact with a recruiter, you discover enough about theirorganisation to decide whether you mightwant to work for them.

The Focus on Management course, held in March, is brimming withemployers. First there are thosepresenting case studies on strategy, finance, marketing or anothermanagement function. Next are the ‘newmanagers’ – doing jobs that you might bedoing in two or three years’ time, representing their companies andworking with you on the challengingproblems posed.

SurveysTo continue to have these figures, we rely on graduates letting usknow about first jobs by completing the Destination of Leaversin Higher Education questionnaire that we will mail to you. Please fill the questionnaire in when it arrives and send it back tous. We will treat it in confidence. All universities collect this datafor the Higher Education Statistics Agency, which publishesindicators of employment and other statistics. The data is alsoused (anonymously) by College to advise present students aboutpossible careers. All data is stored and used strictly in accordancewith the Data Protection Act.

What do graduates fromImperial College do?Graduates get jobs in a wide range of sectors. Take a close look at all the optionsand find out what is available to help you decide on your next step.

Postgraduate study

Further study beckons for 20 per cent of graduates. Popularoptions include PhDs, MScs and vocational qualifications suchas the postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE), with a fewhardy souls embarking on second bachelors degrees. Thefigures vary widely across different departments, as the chartbelow shows. In some areas, for example scientific research,a PhD is practically a prerequisite and in chemistry andbiological sciences more than half become postgraduates. It’sinteresting to note that Imperial is way ahead of any otherinstitution as the most popular choice for postgraduate study. You obviously like it here! A difficult job market tends toincrease the numbers doing further study and vice versa. Thisprobably explains why civil engineering has the lowestpercentage doing further study – their job market is tootempting at present!

Salaries

We have collected some details of salaries earned by graduates.More than 300 graduates responded to this question. Themedian salary was in the range £20,000 to £25,000, but a luckyseven per cent earned salaries of more than £35,000. Only twoper cent earned more than £40,000. At the other end of things, six per cent of graduates were earning less than £15,000 per year.

Size of employer

f those graduating with first degrees in 2006, 67 percent went into employment in a very wide range ofsectors. Many graduate jobs are open to students

with any numerate degree, so options really are endless. Themost popular sector is healthcare, because a large number ofstudents are studying medicine, but it is useful to exclude themedics to see a clearer picture of important sectors for the rest ofthe student body. The table on page 7 shows these figures.

After a couple of difficult years, the banking and financesector has gone back to the top of the table, with 22 per cent ofnon-medical students finding employment here. This hastraditionally been an attractive sector for Imperial graduates.

Technical consultancy and research and development jobscontinue to be important, partly due to the continuing boom incivil engineering.

Another sector (other business activities) is quite diverse, covering the legal profession, marketing, advertising, retail, property and recruitment. This group of 10 per cent contains amixture of those with professional, permanent jobs plus asignificant proportion of others who are doing temporary jobs(typically in the retail sector) while looking for a career andpaying off some debts.

Whilst most students target larger employers, it is interestingto note that 12 per cent of leavers joined organisations with lessthan 50 employees. (See the table on page 7).

What about the rest?About five per cent of Imperial students decide that time off isneeded after all that hard work and go off to travel the world fora while. Employers are generally approving of gap years, sincethe experience can build confidence, improve language skills and, what’s more, jobs picked up along the way can help to develop awhole range of transferable skills that employers are interested in.

Sadly, unemployment is a fact of life for some and thisyear’s survey reports that four per cent of undergraduates werestill looking for a job six months after graduation. This figure isone per cent less than last year. If you should find yourself in thisposition, remember that your degree will remain very attractiveto employers, who will welcome your application, even severalyears after graduation. Be flexible and proactive in your jobsearch and read the other articles in this Guide – particularly‘Use your networks to develop your career’ on page 23. Considervoluntary work or get involved in community projects to updateyour skills base.

More information?More details of graduate destinations for your subject area canbe found on our website – www.imperial.ac.uk/careers. For anational perspective, consult targetjobs.co.uk,www.prospects.ac.uk and check out the labour marketinformation section, which also includes salary information.

As an engineering student I wantedto work with technology but also atthe same time stay in touch with thefinancial market. It is a commonperception that working in thefinancial sector for an engineeringstudent is a career change andmyexperience has been contradictory tothat. It is absolutely essential forinvestment banks to have the rightinfrastructure and architecture inplace to help the business make adifference. If you want somethingnumerically challenging and relatedto what you did at university, consider an internship at a companylike Citigroup Technology.SHERJEEL AMAN,Imperial alumnus, now at Citigroup,MSc communications and signal processing, 2006

he next three or four years should be among the mostinteresting and enjoyable in your life, provided youmake the most of the opportunities available in and

out of College. Here are some ideas to increase self-developmentand employability:• Advice – don’t waste time reinventing everything. Build on the

experience of others. Take advice – test it out, adapt it to suityou, accept some and ignore the rest. To get advice on yourfuture career go to www.imperial.ac.uk/careers.

• Plan – to make the most of your time. And we’re not talking justabout your academic studies, we’re talking about making themost of all that’s available around you, in and out of College.

• Friends – join clubs and societies, attend meetings, take up anew sport, develop a new interest – all of these bring you intocontact with interesting people.

• Volunteer – there are lots of interesting projects that you couldget involved with in the local area. It makes you feel good and isgreat for your CV too. See www.imperial.ac.uk/volunteering.

• Vacation work – most people need to earn some money in thelong vacation. Deadlines for summer internships come upearly in the year so be warned, don’t leave job-hunting too late.

• Visit our website www.imperial.ac.uk/careers where you willfind information about internships and vacation training.Register on JobsLive and receive e-mail alerts about jobs.Write to employers with your CV. The personal approach canbe effective; try calling in to potential vacation employers nearyou and investigate who’s advertising in the local press.

• Mistakes – everyone makes them, but learning from them is animportant part of experience.

KNOWWHAT EMPLOYERSWANTSeizing opportunities at university can help you develop into anideal candidate for top employers.• Skills – think about the skills you have and how youmight develop

them. Employers who recruit you for vacation work, and eventually fora permanent job, will be looking at your abilities in teamwork, problem-solving and communication. Your degree will give you lots ofexperience in problem-solving but make sure you get some teamworkskills by joining a society, club or sports team.

• Commercial awareness is important – be aware of it and developyour skills to demonstrate your awareness. Money, even for scientificresearch, doesn’t grow on trees. Think about how you can add value toany organisation that you are connected with, whether it is gettingsponsorship for your club, selling tickets for events or simply smilingat customers when you are serving drinks at a bar.

• Broad horizons – at Imperial you canmeet people from all over theworld and learnmore about their cultures. When you graduate this cangive you global contacts and an international outlook. In today’sinternational business world your employer will find this an attractivefeature. It can be good for future holidays too!

GET INVOLVED IN OUTSIDE ACTIVITIES

Outstanding candidates tend tospend time outside academiavolunteering in charitable societies, being active in sports teams or takingproactive roles in societies oncampus. A strong candidate mustdemonstrate a good balance betweenacademic achievement and extra-curricular activities. Non-academicskills are equally as important asacademic ones. Some ofthe competences we look forare ‘teamwork’, ‘impactand influence’ and‘leadership potential’.ALI TRAUTTMANSDORFF,head of cross-divisional graduaterecruiting, Goldman Sachs

You are muchmore likely to besuccessful if you are passionateabout what you do. Beforegraduating from Imperial Icompleted internships with aninvestment bank and anengineering company. These mademe realise I wanted the feeling ofadding real value by producing aphysical product in addition to thevibrancy of working for a companyin a competitive and changingmarket. I gain huge satisfactionfrom working on future technologiesaimed at improving theenvironmental performance of ourjet engines. I also know withRolls-Royce the global challengesand opportunities are limitless.MATTHEW LEY,mechanical engineer on the environmentally friendlyengine project at Rolls-Royce, MEng mechanicalengineering, 2004

is complex and based on a series ofpoints, and initially you would beallowed to stay and work in theUK for four years. These points areawarded for educationalqualifications, work experience, earnings, achievements, partner’sachievements and other criteria.

• Innovators SchemeThis is a scheme for entrepreneurswho want to establish a business inthe UK. The four main requirementsare that the business must create jobs, the owner must have shares in it, theentrepreneur must be able to live in theUK without public funds and he or shemust be able to finance his or her firstsix months here.

How do UK-based employersrecruit candidates? The larger employers run graduatetraining schemes, which are usuallyadvertised during the autumn term tostart in the following autumn. Someemployers do not accept applicationsfrom graduates who will need work

Careers Advisory ServiceThe Careers Advisory Service can helpyou with making applications and findingcareers information. You can also findsome useful web pages for internationalstudents on our careers website atwww.imperial.ac.uk/careers.

Home OfficeThe government’s website,www.workingintheuk.gov.uk,provides up-to-date information aboutwork permits and the various schemesand programmes.

Council for International Education(UKCOSA)Current advice notes about workingin the UK during and after yourstudies are available in the CareersInformation Room, but you can alsoobtain a copy from the Council forInternational Education website:www.ukcosa.org.uk/pages/advice.htm.These provide comprehensiveinformation on immigration, finance, working in the UK andgeneral information. There is anadvice line on 020 7107 9922(open Mondays to Fridays from1.00 pm – 4.00 pm).

Working in the UKWherever you come from and whatever you’ve studied at Imperial, employers wantto hear from you. Make sure you stand out from the crowd.

f you don’t have Britishnationality or if you don’thave nationality from a

country that is a member of the EuropeanUnion, it’s highly likely that you come underthe broad classification of internationalstudent. There are over 3,000 internationalstudents at Imperial (not counting thosefrom the European Economic Area), andthe majority come from China, Malaysia,Singapore, India and Nigeria.

Are you allowed to work in the UK?The key to answering this question is thestamp that you will have been given byimmigration in your passport. If thisstates ‘Employment prohibited’ youwill not be allowed to work. If thisstates ‘Consent of Secretary of State’ or‘Work must be authorised’ you will beallowed to work in the UK, as the

prime minister has given blanketpermission for work during your studiesand during your holidays.

Working in the UK duringyour studiesProviding that you have got the correctstamp in your passport, you can goahead. Currently, you are allowed towork for 20 hours per week during yourstudies and for an unlimited time duringyour holidays andinternships, and alsoduring placementsthat form part ofyour degree course.

Working in theUK afteryour studiesThings become

trickier if you wish to work in the UKafter your studies, and there are schemesavailable through the Home Office. Youcan find comprehensive informationabout all schemes and what’s involved atthe Home Office’s website (see page 11).Schemes that might be particularlyrelevant are:

Who said that clean energy was just an electric dream? At npower we’ve created ‘Juice’ energy which comesfrom renewable resources such as our very own wind farms. These wind farms produce enough power to boilnearly a billion kettles a year (give or take the odd peppermint tea), and we don’t charge our customersanything to switch over to using it.

Because with us, it’s not just about making sure the nation can enjoy a nice cup of coffee. We need to thinkabout the environment and answer the questions that are fuelling the UK energy agenda right now. Which iswhy we need some seriously bright graduates to work on these issues from day one. So whether you join usin engineering, commercial and risk, HR, finance, as a business generalist, or on our IS scheme within ourSystems division, we’ll make sure the one question you’re not asking is “do you take sugar with that?”

Finding the rightcareer for youChoosing a career can be a daunting prospect, but breaking down the process canmake life a lot easier and add structure to your search.

employers and thedemands ofoccupations thatinterest you, the nextstep is to developyour application.Employers will wantto see how yourskills, personalqualities andoperating stylematch the attributesand competencesthey are looking for.

For eachemployer you candraw up two lists:1. Tasks they will

want you to doand the skillsrequired to dothem.

2. Personal qualitiesor temperamentyou think they arelooking for.Decide what

evidence you will usefrom your study, work experience orsocial interests thatdemonstrates whatthe employer wants.Refer to the skillstable on page 20 tohelp you do this. Then ask yourself:• Who was involved in the activity – you

alone or other group members?• Where did it take place – in a work

environment, the lab or during a yearin Europe?

• When did it happen – during vacationwork or in term time?

• Why did you undertake it and whatwere your aims – to increase

membership of a club, to have fun or tokeep fit?

• What was achieved – a task completed, sponsorship money raised?

• How did you contribute – did youprovide ideas or help to motivatethe team? What difference didyou make?Draft what you want to get across in

your application form, emphasising whatyou gained from your studies, workexperience and interests outside yourcourse.

TOP TIPS• Draw your examples from as broad a range

of experiences as possible.• The employer will want to know why you

are attracted to them. Your reward for thetime spent researching will be reflected inyour ability to explain this.

• Make sure that yours is a qualityapplication that persuades the employerthat you can and want to do the job youhave so painstakingly researched.

BE FLEXIBLE – KEEP YOUR OPTIONS OPEN

Not many people admit to enjoyingtheir final exams, but it was onlyduring intense revision that Irediscovered my enthusiasm forphysics. As I had previously feltuncertain about a career in science, Ihad looked for something where I coulduse my skills more generally andconsidered Teach First as this schemeseemed to let me keepmy optionsopen for longer, while still movingforward professionally. However afterfinals, I decided to pursue a careerwhere I could move my own scienceforward. After some extensiveresearch I secured a job with QinetiQ,as they seemed to be the companythat could offer me the most.TOBY MONK,BSc Hons physics, 2005

Think about howenterprising andinnovative you are.Take advantage ofthe EnterpriseChallenge to gainexperience of whatit’s like to develop abusiness idea, makea prototype andmarket it.

If you’re applying for jobs with aninternational company, show yourinternational outlook by telling them abouttime spent living abroad, your languageskills and your travel experiences.

Oral and written communication skillsare vital too. To demonstrate these skills, think about experiences such as projectswhere you have written a report andmade a presentation, either individuallyor as part of a group, or where you’vedealt with customers on the phone and inperson, had contact with people outsideCollege, negotiated with a landlord, written for Felix or participated instudent radio.

To develop your skills further, youcould attend the skills workshops run byemployers in the autumn term or the Focuson Management course in March, wherestudents work in teams of young managersfrom government, industry and commercesolving typical problems. As well as learningmore about management, you develop yourteamwork and communication skills.

Attend skills workshopsTo plan your career successfully it’s vitalto consider the skills you have and thoseyou want to develop further. Everythingyou do at Imperial counts and employerswant to know all about it.

irtually everything you’vedone at Imperial can be usedto impress employers.

Employers need hard evidence that youhave what it takes to meet the ‘personspecification criteria’ or competences forthe job. They’re interested in not just yourknowledge, your skills are vital too.

Career planningWhen you plan your career and applyfor jobs, a key step in the wholeprocess is to think hard about all theskills you are developing through yourcourse work, voluntary, leisure andwork experiences. Analyse eachoccupation that interests you, identifyingthe knowledge, skills and competencesthe employer seeks. Decide if you havethe necessary skills.

Attend career-related sessions givenin your department that cover all thekey areas of career choice and jobseeking. If necessary, consult a careersadviser – they have expertise in matchingskills to relevant jobs.

Researching careersThere are plenty of opportunities atImperial where you can talk to peoplealready in employment. Don’t miss thecareers fairs. Employer presentations arerun by departments, societies and by theCareers Service. Employer-led skillsworkshops help you to develop the veryskills they seek in potential employees.Just taking the trouble to attend andlearn, to meet employers and show youhave viewed their website, puts you aheadof the crowd.

Developing relevant skillsSo, you want to impress employers! What can you do? Engage inextra-curricular activities thatdemonstrate the skills recruiters areseeking. Join a society and take someinitiative to improve it. Be sure to getexperience of teamwork whether it is inemployment, volunteering, completing a

Job-hunting? Everythingyou do at Imperial countsYou’ve done all the right things and you’re well on course to complete your degree.Make sure all your skills and experience count in the competition for jobs.

Case study – considering consulting

group project or participating in asporting or musical team. Consider howyou impact on other people.

Work experienceConsider too how your ideas, problem-solving or technical approach have madea difference at work. Your improvedcomputer program or novel way ofapproaching an engineering problemmight make all the difference in deliveringquality work to clients.

Consider the commercial implicationsof what you did when you wereemployed or when managing a budgetfor a club or a group of friends. Whywas a budget necessary and did youkeep within it? Even filling supermarketshelves creates sales opportunities.Perhaps, thanks to you, an improveddatabase added to company profits orminimised losses. Have you ever soldanything, organised an event and soldtickets, raised funds for a charity oran expedition or managed a budget, either in hall or for your flatmates orat work?

Suppose that you want to be a consultingengineer. Youwill need an excellent understandingof the technology and thismight be demonstratedin your degree result. Your initial role may be inthe design teamwhere creativity and ingenuityare important. Your ability to work well withothers in the team from different disciplines isvital. Your manager will want to be sure youimpress the clients. Common sense andexcellent communication skills are essential,

plus the ability to quickly establish rapport withnew people. Good problem-solving ability istaken for granted since that is what you havebeen doing during your degree course.Demonstrating that you can also be aware of therelative costs of different outcomes will beimportant too.

So how would you convince an employer thatyou could make a good consulting engineer?First tell them about your engineering,

especially design projects. If you did anything ina group emphasise the teamwork. Think of yourother achievements as part of a team – perhapsin a committee, a club, a team at youremployment, even the team that live in your flat.

Youmight decide that consultancy is not foryou. That’s OK. Just think of what you have donehere at Imperial and the skills you have developed.Thenconsider thecareers thatmatchwhatyouhaveto offer. Your time here will have been well spent.

If you’re applying for jobs with aninternational company, show yourinternational outlook by telling themabout time spent living abroad, yourlanguage skills and your travelexperiences.

The skills hit list – what employers want

n today’s competitive jobmarket work experience canmake all the difference to your

chances of success. It enhances your CV andimproves your understanding of a particularsector of the world of work. Relevant workexperience enables you to talk intelligentlyand confidently about your skills in practice, the insight you gained into an industryand the skills you’ve been able to developand build on. In short it demonstratesyour added value – the difference betweenyou and the other candidates.

Work experience gives you anopportunity to learn and develop keyskills that employers regard as importantand relevant to your future career. Checkout the skills table on page 20. And workexperience helps you to make careerchoices. It might convince you more thanever that working in a certain area is justthe thing for you or by contrast persuadeyou that it doesn’t suit you after all.

Many employers use work experienceas a testing ground for recruits and mayoffer a job as a result of achievementsduring your employment with them.

How to get itSo, how do you get relevant workexperience? Here are some options.

Writing on specThis usually consists of sending a CV anda covering letter or e-mail with CVattachment to employers that interestyou, giving details of what you can do,what you hope to achieve and your timescale. The advantage of seeking workexperience in this way is that you may notbe competing with anyone else.

NetworkingThis method can work well too. Decidewhere you want to work and what youwant to do. Then follow up contacts youor your friends, relatives or tutors have inthat area. Find out as much as you canfrom those contacts about the industryand the jobs on offer. Then follow upyour conversations with a letter and CV.(See page 26.)

Work experience schemesYou need to know each employer’s

selection system and their closing datesfor applications. This can be an easyway to secure work experience but itbrings with it a fair amount of competitionfrom other students. Details of somework experience schemes are listed below.

INTERNSHIPS: ‘TRY BEFORE YOU BUY’

I chose to do an internship in an investment bankfor a number of reasons. Primarily, it’s the bestopportunity to gain first-hand experience in aparticular field and answer your questions: Is thework interesting? What are the people like? And canyou really cope with those long hours? Withinternships generally leading to graduate job offers,it can also take the pressure off final-year activities. The money tends to come in handy as well...As a result of my internship in aJapanese investment bank, I decidedI wanted to pursue a career thatoffered greater variety in corporateprojects, and so decided on strategyconsulting. I start with L.E.K. Consultingthis September and can’t wait.ROBIN COLLIS,mechanical engineering finalist

Experience overseasThere are numerous programmes on offerthat facilitate work experience in the USAand other countries. These often require afee to cover visa and work permitrequirements. Be careful to check whetheryour airline fare and insurance areincluded when comparing fees. Someprogrammes are listed here. For fulladdresses and telephone numbers visit theCareers Service.• www.istplus.com – various

programmes on offer throughoutthe world.

• www.bunac.org.uk – worldwideworking adventure programmesoverseas (eight weeks to 18 months).

• www.ccusa.com – worldwide work andtravel programmes for young adults.

How to make the most of yourwork experienceIt’s your opportunity to acquire newskills, develop existing ones and learnabout the industry you’re working in.It helps if you keep a diary and reflecton what you actually do. Discovernew strengths and weaknesses, whatyou enjoyed, what you achieved andwhat responsibilities you’ve had.Note down the names, job titles andcontact details of other people forfuture networking.

List key skills, how you appliedthem in practice and developed themfurther. For example, have you met

ven if you know what youwant to do and regularly checknewspapers and our website

for vacancies you may not see any suitablevacancies. But don’t assume that there areno relevant opportunities for you and justgive up. Focus your ideas and develop anetwork to get where you want to be.

While many publications featuregraduate vacancies, it’s important torealise that lots of job opportunities arenever advertised. They form a ‘hidden’job market, particularly important foremployers operating in specialist areasand competitive sectors like the media. This calls for a proactive approach –networking and applying speculatively.

What’s it all about?Networking is about getting the insideinformation. It’s not about asking for ajob, just letting people know that you arelooking for an opportunity. You can askfor feedback on your CV, about wherejobs might be coming up and whatopportunities exist for work shadowing.Discover which skills are most important.Networking can create what others call‘luck’, by getting you into the right placeat the right time.

If you feel apprehensive aboutnetworking, consider this. If someonewanted your advice about studying atImperial, wouldn’t you be happy to giveup ten minutes of your time? Similarlymost professionals are happy to talkabout their work – we all like to talkabout our successes!

How to do itThink of all the people you already know– family, friends, colleagues, lecturers, acquaintances from leisure activities andgraduates who are perhaps alreadyworking. Sometimes you’ll realisestraight away who might be helpful. If you don’t know what work someonedoes, ask them.

If no one in your immediate networkcan get you started, don’t worry. The

power of networking is that everyone elsehas their own individual network too, linking you to new possible contacts.

The next step is to get in touch.Whether communicating by e-mail, phoneor letter, be clear about what you want.Prepare carefully for every conversation. If you want to arrange a meeting, ask fora short time – you’re more likely to get it.And promote yourself too.

Keep expanding your network byasking for names of other people whomight be able to help. Be sure to thankcontacts afterwards, with a card or ane-mail. This is not just politeness; it helpsto remind them positively about you.

Reflect on what you’ve gained fromeach contact. Don’t be disheartened byslow progress. Every new insight isuseful in making you a better-preparedcandidate.

Speculative approachesAlongside your networking, it’s useful tomake some speculative applications. Thissimply means applying to an employer

not currently advertising any suitablevacancies. Speculative applications mustbe well targeted – networking will helphere. Through your detective work, you’llhave a better idea what to emphasise onyour CV. Ideally, you can identify aparticular individual to send yourapplication to rather than the ‘head ofrecruitment’. Someone working in yourfield of interest is better able to appreciatewhat you can bring to the organisation. Ifpossible, mention a mutual contact orremind them that you have already met.

Opening the door to opportunitiesNetworking and making speculativeapplications are the keys to unlockingthe hidden job market. For some careerareas it’s the best way, for others it’s theonly way! And networking skills improvewith practice.

Use your networks todevelop your careerNetworking is an important skill and it could just get you where you want to be.

FURTHER STUDYI

www.imperial.ac.uk/careers

Postgraduate study– is it right for you?Postgraduate study is a major investment of both time andmoney. Weigh up allyour options before deciding to continue studying at university.

here are over 16,500postgraduate courses onoffer in the UK. People take

up postgraduate study for many differentreasons. Often it’s for the enjoymentgained from studying an interestingsubject in depth. Sometimes it’s with aspecific career in mind. For some careerpaths such as teaching, law and clinicalbiochemistry, postgraduate study isessential, for others such as engineeringgeologist or petroleum engineer it is agreat asset in the competition for jobs.

If you have decided to change thedirection of your career a conversioncourse may help. But many students optfor postgraduate study simply becausethey enjoy university life and don’t wantit to stop just yet. Let’s look closer…

Becoming a specialistMost masters degrees offer the possibilityof becoming an expert in your chosenfield, adding to the knowledge you gainedon your first degree. As an electricalengineer you might decide to studytelecommunications, microelectronics ordigital systems. Civil engineers can use amasters degree to learn more aboutconcrete structures or geotechnicalengineering. As a biochemist you mightwant to gain in-depth knowledge of celland molecular biology or toxicology. These are just examples. Every degreesubject has its specialisms in which youcould become expert.

Changing directionYou may have enjoyed your first degreebut decide that you’d prefer to take upemployment in a different field. Aconversion course could be the answer. If, for example, you decide to go into IT,you’ll find many conversion courses onoffer in the UK for students with otherfirst degrees.

There are also conversion courses inlaw for non-law graduates intending tobecome solicitors or barristers. Anotherfavourite is to make a move towards a

management career, and you couldspecialise in areas such as marketing, finance or human resource management.

Some graduates decide to study for amasters in business administration(MBA), but most of the good courses inthis area are ‘post-experience’ courses andare best taken when you have gainedthree or four years’ experience in yourcareer. If the Association of MBAsapproves the course it is a good one.

TeachingIf you have the skills that will make you agood teacher, especially in the sciences, there are several routes into teaching.• You can take a Postgraduate Certificate

in Education (PGCE). You can get abursary of £6,000–£9,000 to cover thecourse if you’re training to teachscience or maths at secondary school,as well as a possible ‘golden hello’payment when you’ve qualified.Apply via the Graduate TeacherTraining Register – see www.tda.gov.ukfor details.

• Or you can get into a school andlearn on the job; teaching is not justabout state schools – there are

opportunities in private education,sixth-form colleges and colleges offurther education.

• Or you can opt for an increasinglypopular scheme called Teach First, which includes work experience withleading employers as well –www.teachfirst.org.uk.

ResearchDo you enjoy practicals, working in thelaboratory or delving into theories andmodels? If so, then a PhD or MPhil mightbe your cup of tea. Take a moment toconsider this option:• research takes a lot of

determination, patience andstamina – to take on a project andhammer away at it for three years, you need to be really keen!

• it is the recognised route tobecoming a professional researcheror academic

• there are plenty of other careeroptions too with a research degree,so if you think you would find itchallenging and enjoyable and don’tmind not having a salary for a fewyears, it’s worth considering.

There are several different types of PhD:• some are purely academic, pushing

back the frontiers of knowledge –usually funded by Research Councils

• or you can take on a real industrialproblem and may get funding fromindustry; companies often ask academicsto research into various projects andtake on PhD students to help themcomplete the work – see the profile below

• some students are financed for this typeof research through a Co-operativeAward in Science and Engineering (CASE)

• the Faraday Partnership, supported by theDepartment of Trade and Industry (DTI)and the Engineering and Physical SciencesResearch Council (EPSRC) supports someresearch students; these schemes encourageresearch that relates to specific industriesand is completed by a partnership betweena university and an industrial companyor contract research organisation –see the websites of DTI or EPSRCor www.faradaypartnerships.org.ukfor details

• Doctorates in Engineering (EngD) arefour-year courses during which researchstudents spend most of their time in anindustrial setting, tackling a realcommercial problem; for example, research sponsored by Corus.

What about the money?• The research councils are major funders

of postgraduate study; you usually needa 2.1 to get Research Council fundingfor a PhD; competition can be fierce.

• UK citizens who are successful shouldget their fees paid with an award tocover living expenses; European Unioncitizens would only get fees paid.

• Industry occasionally providesfunding too, sometimes arrangedthrough academics.

• Employers sometimes fund theiremployees to take courses resulting inadditional skills of benefit to thecompany; you usually need to beworking for the company for a whilebefore they will support you.

• Directories such as the Grants Register,International Awards and the Directoryof Grant Making Trusts, all available inthe Careers Service, provide details oftrusts and other organisations that canhelp fund postgraduate study.

• For research in health-related areasthere are several charities, includingCancer Research UK, that offer researchopportunities to postgraduates.

• More information on European researchopportunities can be gained from theCommunity Research & DevelopmentInformation Service – www.cordis.lu/en.

I graduated in mechanical engineering in 2003and had two possibilities: a job offer at Airbus or aPhD in failure modelling of aerospace carbon-fibre atImperial. I knew frommy undergraduate projectsand work experience that I wanted to be in industrynot academia so why a PhD? It was the breadth ofthe project that really interested me.I can now see that I made the right choice. Not

only have I learned a wide range of valuabletechnical skills but doing an industrially-sponsoredPhD really developed key competences such asproject management, communication, teamworking, taking initiative, business awareness andbalancing conflicting demands ina complex project. These skillsare highly transferable toindustry and, when combinedwith work experience andextra-curricular activities, made a PhD a smart choicefor me.ADRIAN GILL,PhD aeronautics

o get the job you want –internship, voluntaryexperience or graduate position

– you need to persuade the employer to offeryou an interview. Your CV must create aninstant impression on the employer.

When to use a CV?When a vacancy is advertised someemployers will expect you to submit anapplication form; others will ask for aCV. For the unadvertised job market –when you want to apply to an employerspeculatively for work that interests youor for an internship – you should sendyour CV with a covering letter.

How long should it be?Aim for two sides of A4. This should giveyou sufficient space to set out theinformation relevant to your application. Some employers, especially Americancompanies, may prefer a one-page CV. Usethe space well, with careful and creativeediting.

What style?Good-quality paper, using black ink and afont size that is easy on the eye, canimpress. Help the employer to focus onkey information by using bold forheadings and sub-headings and bulletpoints to emphasise actions andachievements. Your CV should reflectyour uniqueness and highlight yourstrengths. Some websites provideready-made templates, which can behelpful, but they should be used with care.

Ensure your CV is a winnerYou can make your CV stand out throughyour experiences and the way you writeabout them. It is a self-edited account ofthe significant events in your life that arerelevant to your application. It provides apositive picture of who you are and whatyou have achieved in your life so far. Donot underestimate the value of yourexperiences to an employer and what youhave learned from them about how youget things done, use your initiative,

contribute to a group to get results orhow good you are at taking responsibility.Use examples of project work, employment, volunteering experiencesand social activities to explain yourcompetences and what distinguishes youfrom other candidates.

Employers want to hear the goodnews about you, told in a direct way.You can help them to match yourcompetencies with what they are lookingfor when you write effectively. Use actionwords – organised, designed, analysed, devised, implemented, investigated, contributed, achieved targets. Employpositive phrases – responsible for, demonstrated skills in, suggested a novelapproach, worked to a budget ordeadline. Enable the employer to imagineyou working successfully for them.

What to include? In the UK, information is usuallypresented in reverse chronological order. You need to include:

To apply, send your CVand covering letter to...The purpose of your CV and covering letter is to get your name on the interviewshortlist, so care and attention will pay dividends.

• Personal details: name, address, e-mailand telephone or mobile number, dateof birth, nationality.

• Education: start with your degreestudies and work back. Mentionsubjects, projects and practical labskills relevant to your application.Refer to anticipated results and includequalifications from school or college.

• Work experience: give details of theemployer, what you did including skillsdeveloped and what you achieved.

• Volunteering experience: mention theorganisation, the project you wereworking on and what you achieved, including your role and skills developed.

• Skills: list computer software andlanguages and include foreign languageskills and driving licence.

• Interests and responsibilities: mentionactivities you are involved in, eg drama, student radio, sports, societies,International Night, ‘re-app’ in hall, committee membership, travel andexpeditions. Concentrate on morerecent activities, rather than those fromschool. Mention your achievements andthe skills you developed. Convey howyou reached decisions, plannedactivities, and interacted with others tomeet a challenge; quantify for exampleincreased membership or funds raised.

• Referees: name two people, who haveagreed to write on your behalf, egcollege tutors or managers. Includetheir job title and contact details. This is one way of putting the

information together. You could includean extended section on the skills you havedeveloped through your studies andwork, quoting examples to illustrate thepoints you want to make.

Second opinionThe Careers Serviceprovides workshopson how to put yourCV together andgives information onCVs on the website –www.imperial.ac.uk/careers. Links areprovided to websites with information onhow to write a CV for other countries.

Covering lettersThe purpose of the covering letter is tocreate a favourable first impression, persuading the employer to read your CV.It should reinforce the essentialinformation in your CV. So, it is abusiness document that requires carefulthought, writing and editing skills.

How long should it be?It should be no longer than one side ofA4 paper, allowing space for youraddress, and the address and detailsof the person and company you arecontacting.

Unless a company directs you to sendit to a specific e-mail address you shouldaddress the letter to a person by nameand finish ‘Yours sincerely’.

What to include?A covering letter is like an advertisingflyer: it should give edited highlightsfrom your CV, explaining why you aresuitable for the internship or job you areapplying for.

The main body of the letter comprises:1. Start with information on what you are

applying for, if an advertised position;or if applying speculatively, say whatkind of opportunity you are looking

for. Tell the employer what you arecurrently doing – include the subjectyou’re studying and which year youare in.

2. Tell them why you believe you aresuitable for the position. Highlightyour most relevant skills and abilitiesthrough writing about thecircumstances where they wereacquired. For example, you mayhave been involved with a numberof projects during your course. You could indicate how youcontributed to the team and helpedfind a solution to the problem, wrotea report and presented your findingsto your year group.

Perhaps your work experienceinvolved selling or identifying the needfor a database: you could mention theproduct knowledge you gained, howyou dealt diplomatically withcustomers and were able to persuadeand influence others. Be concise:use short sentences and bullet points tolist major achievements.

3. Say what attracts you to the company.Mention what you have in commonwith them – knowledge of the industryor interest in the type of work theyoffer. Refer to any contact withemployees at a presentation and howimpressed you were.

4. Mention that your CV is attachedand give some idea of when you areavailable for interview. Finish bysaying that you look forward tomeeting them.

Electronic applicationsSome employers ask you to e-mail yourCV or submit it on their website. It makessense to use the e-mail message to conveysuccinctly the key points about you thatwill grab the employer’s attention, making sure your writing style is asconcise and business-like as it would beon a paper cover letter.

TOP TIPAdapt your letter for each company youcontact. An e-mail may be shorter in lengththan a covering letter but should still conveythe essential points from your CV that arerelevant to your application. Keep a copy ofyour letter to refer to later.

Tell them why you believe you aresuitable for the position. Highlight yourmost relevant skills and abilities.

APPLICATIONS & INTERVIEWSI

www.imperial.ac.uk/careers

eading employers receivethousands of applications, sometimes for hundreds of

vacancies. Smaller firms have fewervacancies but may receive considerablyfewer applications. Competition may beless severe. Only those candidates whoprovide sufficient evidence of their suitabilityto convince selectors that they are strongapplicants are invited to an interview.

Recruiters apply their company’sselection criteria when assessing a form. They gain their first impression of youfrom reading your application. Those thatget through are well researched andcarefully focused in their presentation. They clearly match what the applicanthas to offer with what the employer islooking for. Some applications will fail forreasons that could have been avoided –mistakes in spelling and grammar, waffle, clichés or using sentences where bulletpoints would convey much more in aword or character-limited answer.

Application formsMost large organisations will want you touse their application form – and prefer orrequire you to apply online. Alternatively, some firms, especially smaller ones, askfor a CV. Follow the instructions theemployer gives about which format to use.

Types of questionsAt first sight, most forms seem easy tocomplete. You are asked to providepersonal details followed by exam resultsand work experience. These questionsrequire short factual answers. Multiple-choice questions require you to tickboxes, often to indicate your preferredgeographical location and choice ofcareer, such as research, production, marketing or finance.

Those most difficult to answer are openquestions requiring you to write shortparagraphs. These are designed to test yourself- and career awareness, eg why haveyou chosen a particular career, have youthe qualities and abilities to be successful in

it and do you understand what it involves? Some seek evidence of competences suchas teamwork, commercial awareness andproblem solving.

They want to match your broaderskills with their selection criteria. Hencequestions such as: give an example ofwhen you achieved a goal throughworking in a team; what did you do thatmade a difference; how do you know youwere successful?

Your answersDeveloping your answers will take somethought. Draw up a list of skills theemployer is looking for. Review theevidence from your activities that matchesthe selection criteria. Draft yourresponses, avoiding false modesty –remember to market yourself positively.

Make your application standout – for all the right reasons!Application forms are usually your first chance to impress a future employer –so let them know what you’ve done and the skills you have to offer.

TOP TIPS FOR ALL APPLICATIONS• Read the form and follow the instructions!• Use the notes you have prepared about

yourself.• Write clearly and directly, using short

paragraphs to structure it.• Make sure your answers fit the spaces

provided.• Research information about the company

and the job.• Check your spelling and grammar.• Do a final check for content – is it relevant

and does it answer the questions asked?• Keep a copy of your application.

TOP TIPS FOR ONLINE FORMS• Print off the form to get a sense of it as a

whole.• Work on your paper copy before

committing yourself online. Some formsrequire you to complete themwithin alimited time and then send themimmediately.

• Check the word or character count you areallowed for each answer and stay within it.

• Keep answers concise and relevant if thereis no word limit.

• Draft your answers positively.• Use spellchecker with care and watch your

grammar.• Print off a copy and remember to save your

form online.

TAKE A TARGETED APPROACH TO YOUR JOB-HUNTING

Research each company properly and tailor yourapplication to each one. Use your covering letter tohighlight points on your CV that you think will makeyou particularly attractive to that company. Sell allthe skills including teamwork, organisation –not just your research skills. If you feelthat some of these are lacking thenattend a skills development course suchas those offered by the Careers Serviceor the Graduate School.MATTHEW STAPLETON,PhD physics

Make sure you stand out from othercandidates, who may also have a gooddegree. Review your application formor CV and make sure that you canexpand confidently on everything thatis written there.

You can use the typical questions onthis page to get you started and practiseanswering them out loud. Articulatingyour answers is harder than thinkingthem over in your head and it will helpyou to sound more convincing and fluenton the day.

What happens during aninterview? The ‘interview’ starts when you walkthrough the door.• Try to make a good impression by

looking confident, relaxed and happy.• A firm handshake conveys confidence.• Make eye contact with your interviewer

and smile.• Sit up straight. Don’t cross your arms

to create barriers.• Open body language suggests that you

are listening and receptive to theirideas.

• If you feel nervous, remind yourselfthat interviewers want you to succeed. They need to fill a vacancy. Most interviews are ‘competence

based’. Recruiters seek examples of whenyou have applied skills that are relevantto the job. When you answer questionssuch as, ‘When did you work in a team?’– focus on your role, what you did andthe results of your efforts.

Check the skills table on page 20and think about the evidence you wouldput in the final column. Draw examplesfrom employment, leisure activities, holidays, sport, organisations you arein and interests as well as academiclife. When questioned about yourextra-curricular activities, focus onthose that show you co-operating withothers, using your initiative, working ina team or holding responsibilities.

Explain changes of career focuspositively. Talk about getting into thiscareer, not getting out of something else.

Interviewers will check out howcommitted you are likely to be ifappointed. Common questions include:• Where do you want to be in five

years’ time?• Who else have you applied to?• What do you know about us?

Good research will help you answerquestions like these.

Some questions are designed toassess your intellectual abilities. Theyinclude questions about your academic

record, degree subject and hypotheticalproblems to see if you can think onyour feet. Stay calm and rememberthat they are interested in yourproblem-solving skills – the process, not just the result.

Telephone interviewsTelephone interviews are becomingincreasingly popular, especially for firstinterviews. Just because it’s over thetelephone, doesn’t mean that you canskimp on your interview preparation ortreat it any less formally.

Ensure that you:• Have privacy for the interview, away

from distractions, flatmates and noise.• Have your CV or application form to

hand, as well as some paper for makingnotes. The range of questions will be similar

to those in a standard interview, soprepare with some typical questions tohelp your fluency and be clear about theimportant points you want to get acrossto the employer.

The major difference is the lack ofvisual cues, but body language still hasa role:• Your voice will sound better if you sit

up straight or even stand.

Win the interview gameAll that stands between you and your dream job is the interview. Now all you haveto do is show them you’re the best candidate for the job.

on’t be daunted by jobinterviews. Someoneobviously liked what they saw

in your application and you have passedthe first hurdle. Thorough preparation isthe key to interview success. Employerswant to meet you in person to check that:• You can do the job – do you have the

right skills and qualifications?• You really want to work for them –

are you enthusiastic and motivated?• Can they imagine you getting on well

with staff, superiors, peers, customers, suppliers and business partners? It’s also your chance to find out more

about the organisation and the job. Whatexactly will you be doing? Who will yoube working with? Would you enjoyworking there?

Break your pre-interview research downinto two halves: finding out about theemployer and getting ready to ‘sell’ yourself.

Research the employer and the job• What do you know about the employer,

their industry and competitors?• What are the key issues affecting this

sector at present?

The answers to these questions can befound if you:• investigate the employer’s website and

attend presentations and careers fairs.Make a real effort to understand what

the job would involve; research using:• careers guides and occupational

information reference files• quality careers information websites such

as targetjobs.co.uk andwww.prospects.ac.uk

• professional bodies’ websites andpublications. And don’t forget to talk to anyone you

know who is already doing a similar typeof work!

All of this preparatory work will helpyou to build your confidence and enableyou to come over as a well-motivatedcandidate. Employers tell us that theybecome extremely frustrated whenapplicants don’t understand the job or theorganisation. As you do your research, make a list of questions to ask at theinterview.

Market yourself effectively• Make certain that you are clear about

what exactly you have to offer theorganisation.

• Consider your strengths, yourachievements and your most well-developed skills.

• Provide evidence in support of all thefactors that make you a strongcandidate.

• See yourself as a valuable resource thatis potentially available to the employer.

Typical questions and whythey are asked• What made you choose your degree

course? This is to find out about you andwhat interests you.

• Why have you applied to us? This is todiscover howmuch you’ve found outabout them and how focused your careerplans are.

• What other jobs have you applied for? Thisquestion aims to discover whether you’resufficiently focused upon the industry.

• What are your threemain strengths?Recruiters not only want to find out whatyou’re really good at but also to ascertainyour level of self-awareness.

• What is your greatest weakness? Whenanswering this question try to use anexample that you can turn around andshow that you’re dealing with positively,eg ‘My word processing is not very fast soI’ve enrolled on a course to improve’.

• Describe a situation where you have had tosolve a problem. What did you learn fromit? This question is designed to work outhow you go about problem-solving andwhether you can learn from your mistakes.

• Why should we employ you? This isan opportunity to demonstrate yoursuitability and draw parallels betweenwhat you’ve got to offer and what theyneed.

Most of thequestions I faced atinterview were of thetype, ‘Give us anexample of when you...’.They wanted me toshow evidence that Ihad the relevant skillsin teamwork, timemanagement, conflictresolution, etc. It’s all very well

claiming that you readThe Economist, FT,New Statesman, but they will see rightthrough you if youcannot talk about evenone story from thebusiness world thatinterested you. I speakfrom experience!DAVID PAYNE,maths graduate, 2004

• You could record your voicebeforehand to get an idea of what yousound like.

• Avoid monotones and use gestures asyou would in normal conversation;they will tend to make your voicesound livelier.

• If you come to an awkward silence andare not sure whether or not tocontinue, you can always ask ‘Wouldyou like me to expand on that?’ or‘Does that answer your question?’Finally, have your diary to hand so

that, if successful, you can schedule thenext round there and then.

There is a video,DVD and a good stock of books andhandouts that include typical questionsto help your preparation. You canrequest a mock interview with a careersadviser once you have done somepreparation for the interview. This willprovide an opportunity to practise andreceive feedback. You can also askemployers for feedback afterunsuccessful interviews, which can beextremely useful. Finally, practiseinterviewing with your friends. • Express lots of interest when touring theirpremises.

INTERVIEWS NEED PREPARATION AND PRACTICE

Any experience can be goodexperience, whether it is working in agroup for a project, assisting in asociety event or a weekend job.

Interviewing well is a skill you can develop throughpreparation and practice. Most first-roundinterviews are competence based and ofteninclude numerical and verbal tests. It’s unusual toget an offer from the first company you apply to.So don’t get disheartened – be objective and viewevery interview as useful experience to build on forthe next.NASREEN AL-HAKIM,audit, financial services, KPMG, BSc mathematics, 2005

My advice when going for internshipinterviews is to ask relevant questions, show genuine interest and make aneffort to learn. Prepare yourself well –

know what ‘competences’ they’re looking for andyou’ll understand what they’re really asking. Makesure your answers are interesting so they rememberyou after the interview!JIA-HONG TAN,summer intern at Citigroup, BSc physics, 2006

It was mainly a technical interview bya panel of three people: two weretechnical staff and the third was fromHR. The technical people asked me to

explain my PhD and challengedme about itsrelevance to the real world. I was asked to outline indetail how I had carried out a specific project andthen some technical questions on a topic they knewI knew very little about! The HR person asked meabout my role in teams. The mock interview sessionin the Careers Service beforehand helped a greatdeal – thanks!MATTHEW STAPLETON,PhD physics

centres, especially during the autumn andspring terms. If you have specificquestions about an assessment centre thatyou have been invited to, raise theseduring a quick-query session with acareers adviser.

Psychometric testsThese are often included at assessmentcentres; there are two types – aptitudetests and personality questionnaires.Aptitude tests are strictly timed andtypically involve verbal, numerical anddiagrammatic reasoning. In contrast, personality questionnaires are not timedand feel less like an exam. Remember thattest results are just one part of the picturewhen decisions are made. Interviews areoften used to follow up the results of apersonality questionnaire.

What types of employers use tests?Tests are used by many employers acrossmost sectors, including IT, engineering, energy, banking, consultancy, accountancy, the civil service, the public sector,fast-moving consumer goods and retail.

Why do employers use them?Employers like tests because they areobjective. It is impossible to completelyeliminate subjectivity and bias frominterviews. A cynic might add that insome very popular areas, like banking, tests offer a quick and relatively low-costmethod of whittling down the numbers.

How should I prepare forpsychometric tests?Practice can help you know what toexpect. If an employer sends youexamples make sure you do them.Percentages, pie charts, histograms andratios figure strongly. Even if you haveA level maths, it may help to remindyourself of ‘the basics’ again.• Where can I get more information

about tests?– in the Careers Service you can obtain

practice aptitude test booklets for asmall charge

– we also have several books detailingdifferent types of tests as well as afree handout

– practise an online psychometric testunder timed conditions and getfeedback on our website –www.imperial.ac.uk/careers

– have a look at the Prospects website, which has comprehensiveinformation about tests and someuseful links.

• What if I have special needs?Let employers know in advance.

mployers use assessmentcentres to obtain a morerounded view of candidates.

They want to see how you interact withothers, not just at one-to-one interviews. An invitation to an assessment centre usuallyfollows a successful first-round interview, although sometimes it is your first contactwith the employer. A wide range of activitiescan take place at assessment centres.

What’s in it for me?All selection processes are two-way. Youcan find out much more about your

potential employer. You will meet a rangeof employees, gain a better understandingof the culture of the organisation andhave the opportunity to ask lots ofquestions. You can be more certain thatyou are really interested in them.

How many people will be invited?Assessment centres can include groupexercises where you work on a range ofproblems with five or six othercandidates. Some, all or none of thecandidates may be appointed. Try toregard the other candidates as people to

Getting to know youAssessment centres are used by recruiters across the board. Having successfullynegotiated the first-round interview, they give you another opportunity to shine!

co-operate with rather than ‘thecompetition’. Boost your confidence byrealising that assessment centres areexpensive to run – only strong, viablecandidates are invited.

How will I be assessed?Employers have a checklist of skills, abilities or ‘competences’ against whichthey rate you during each exercise andinterview. These include:• problem solving• team/group skills• communicating successfully• handling complexity• commercial awareness• drive/energy• initiative• ability to influence/persuade• technical understanding• an enterprising approach.

Assessors will keep detailed notes ofhow you are doing, grade you againsteach competence in each exercise and look

TOP TIPS FOR APTITUDE TESTS• Get a good night’s sleep.• Take your calculator with you.• Listen very carefully to the instructions –

ask questions if you are not clear.• Don’t focus on finishing the tests. They are

designed so that very few people willcomplete them.

• Success is based on a compromisebetween high speed and reasonableaccuracy.

• Skip questions you find difficult. (This maynot be possible with computer-based tests.)

• Avoid wild guessing.• In numerical tests, using approximations

can save you a lot of time.• Time yourself – you won’t get any

warnings about time running out.

The Careers Service’sonline tests reallyhelped when it came tothe real thing.EMILY BOWMAN,civil engineering finalist

They must be able to makesuitable arrangements for you.If you get extra time in Collegeexams, mention that to employers. You might be able to get extra timefor the tests.

• How should I approach personalitytests?Be yourself! Don’t try to reinvent yourpersonality. You won’t know what theyare looking for so go with your gutreaction. Questions are designed bypsychologists to detect when someoneis being less than honest.

CORE COMPETENCES

NAME Akira KirtonDEGREEMEng inchemicalengineering(2002)JOB Global programmanager for theemerging consumers team at BP

Core competences are what companies arelooking for increasingly, so make sure youthink about these prior to your interview. It’snot only important to have demonstratedthese (eg on your CV), you have to thinkabout which of your past experiences proveyou have these capabilities and how you candemonstrate these at your interview(s). Forexample, at BP we look at a cross-section:leadership, teamwork, performance bias, innovation, wise decisions and technicalcapabilities. Of course it’s not just abouttalking, it’s about doing – so we test how youreact/work in varying scenarios (group orindividual games and tasks as well as strictinterviewing). Ultimately, you have to beyourself. However, make sure it’s your bestself: so be confident, assured and have fun.An interview is a two-way process (like a firstdate); it’s not just about impressing thecompany – you should also be testing to seeif the company impresses you as, after all, ifyou accept an offer, it can be for life...

ASK FOR FEEDBACK

NAME Robin CollisDEGREEmechanical engineering

My interviews for strategy consultanciesincluded case studies, which ranged fromestimating the UK cattle taggingmarket tomy views on Airbus’ new A380. Firms tend tobe interested in assessing how logical youare in solving a particular problem – there israrely a right or wrong answer. If yourinterview is unsuccessful, make sure you askfor feedback to use at the next one.

carefully at your overall performance.Even the best candidates won’t doeverything perfectly, if you feel you havemade a slip, don’t let it put you off – stayfocused!

Practicalities• Arrive at the venue in good time. There

is no excuse for lateness!• Take employer literature and a copy of

your application with you for your ownreference.

• Dress codes may be indicated in theinvitation and should be followed. It isbetter to be too smart than too casual.

• Make a note of the names of all thecompany representatives you meet.

• Participate: there are no marks for nottaking part.

• Be friendly and co-operative witheveryone. You never know who willhave the decisive say about whether tohire you or not.

• Follow all instructions carefully.• If you are not sure what you are being

requested to do, ask for clarification.

How can the Careers Service helpme prepare? We have several books coveringassessment centres you can refer to. Youcan watch the video, Assessment Centres, which lasts for 20 minutes. Look out forworkshops or talks about assessment
