Welcome

I am delighted to report that 2019 has once again been a positive and successful year for the Foundation. It has continued to grow and develop, raising an astonishing £12.1m, through fundraising and corporate matching. And over the 27 years since the Foundation first began a phenomenal £93m has been raised. I am very proud of the St. James’s Place community, and their continued enthusiasm and commitment to give time, money and support to the Foundation. The efforts of the community were also recognised earlier in the year when we were very honoured and humbled to receive a Philanthropy Award at the Better Society Awards 2019.

The Foundation has always been a very special part of the St. James’s Place business and its continued growth

demonstrates clearly how special to everyone it truly is and epitomises the founding principle on which it was formed ‘to give back to those less fortunate and make a positive and lasting difference to people’s lives’.

That giving back takes place all year round through a variety of activities both small and large. Our flagship fundraisers in 2019 included walking in the Quantock hills, trekking in Montenegro and cycling Vienna to Prague, all excelled. Fundraising Dinners and Balls by the Partnership also made a significant contribution. And underpinning all of this, is the fact that almost 90% of the community give a monthly donation which accounts for £3.4m of the total monies raised.

I would also like to extend a special thank you to David Bellamy who stepped down as Chair and Trustee of the Foundation in 2019. He has been a driving force for the Foundation and made a positive and lasting difference to its success.

And finally, on behalf of the Trustees, I extend our sincere thanks to the St. James’s Place community, both in the UK and Asia, and to the shareholders of St. James’s Place Plc, for their unending support and commitment.

2019 has been our biggest year for grant-making, having given out £13.9m to charities in the UK, Asia and other parts of the world. We are honoured to work with some incredible charities, who are so often delivering transformational change to so many lives – you can read about some of these, further in this report.

In the last year we have continued to support smaller grassroots charities, where we feel our help can make a bigger impact. The largest area of support is to charities working with children and young people who have either a disability or are disadvantaged.

In addition, we also support the hospice sector, charities working in cancer support and in the field of mental health.

The chart on page 3 shows how our monies have been distributed over the past year.

Year on year we are receiving increases in the number of applications for funding across all our core themes. This demonstrates the ongoing challenge for the charity sector to secure funding to deliver their services, in a challenging financial environment and in managing increasing demand.

An aspect to our grant-making also involves the wider St. James’s Place community through volunteering so that we can provide a more holistic package of support. We are keen that this continues to develop, so that together we can harness the power of a range of activities that will enable positive change and lasting impact.

2019 was the biggest year ever for the Charitable Foundation, £13.9 million was given out to charities to help deliver their services across our four core funding themes:

In addition, many of the St. James’s Place community gave their time and skills through volunteering with our supported charities but also planned, organised and fundraised through various events across the UK and in Asia.

The impact our grants make goes beyond the simple monetary transaction – our support enables long-term positive change both for the charity and their beneficiaries. We are committed to making a real difference to the lives of those in need. Below, and in the following pages, are a snapshot of the charities we supported in 2019.

How we support children and young people

St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation aims to make a positive and lasting difference to people’s lives and supporting young people is still our largest area of focus. We look to support young people up to the ages of 25 who are socially or economically disadvantaged or mentally/physically disabled. The projects we fund support a wide range of activities which are demonstrated in the following stories.

Youth LeadsYouth Leads (formally Xplode) is an award-winning charity getting the voice of young people heard and acted upon. They run skills development programmes, publish ‘Xplode’ magazine and believe in a country where youth leads. Saeed Attcha founded the youth magazine ‘Xplode’ when he was 15. He wanted to give young people better skills and for them to feel empowered to influence change in their communities. In January 2019, Saeed was awarded an MBE for his services.

The charity was awarded a grant of £10,000 to fund a part time co-ordinator to support the recruitment and training of volunteers. This project has seen the recruitment of 20 disadvantaged young people aged 16-21 who have taken part in a training programme delivered by corporate partners. They have become leaders in key job skills from digital recruitment to ‘train-the-trainer’ sessions and act as ‘employability champions’. They will connect with other youth settings and schools to deliver peer-to-peer-led employability training.

6

My journey at Youth Leads has been an incredible one. It has given me the confidence to get involved in things that I wouldn’t have earlier on. Through being a part of the social events and activities we’ve organised, I got an opportunity to enhance my communication skills and use my creativity to help make a difference. The love and support from the team has always

encouraged me to put my best in everything we do in our community.’’ ‘‘

Street LeagueStreet League’s vision is to see an end to youth unemployment in the UK through the power of sport. Street League runs sport and employability programmes in the Midlands, Northern England and Scotland.

Street League were supported by a three year multi-year grant to support the salary cost of two Modern Apprenticeship Assessors in Scotland. They will support unemployed young people into sustained work, training and education via apprenticeships.

The charity provides football sessions to teach teamwork, leadership, discipline and communication. Young people are also provided with one-to-one support, CV writing, career advice and mentoring, along with work experience placements and qualifications to help gain employment.

Throughout my time on the Street League employability programme, I had the support of my coaches Scott and Joe, who boosted my confidence massively. Their guidance and patience with me are something I am grateful for as they are the main reason that I have now been in employment with Together Energy for over a year. Now I am participating in the Modern Apprenticeship programme via Street League and the support and guidance I have received from my assessor Michael has been great as well. It is great being supported by great people.’’

How we support children and young people

OnSide Youth ZonesOnSide Youth Zones are designed to give people aged 8-19 (or up to 25 for those with a disability) somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to regardless of their background and ability. The Youth Zones are there for young people in deprived areas where the alternative for many is spending their evenings on the streets or isolated in their bedrooms surfing the internet. Young people can take part in a multitude of activities such as sport, fitness, dance, arts, music, media, enterprise and well-being and self-improvement workshops.

The OnSide story is one of remarkable and rapid growth, built on a business model that seeks to unite the funding community with each Local Authority to nurture the specific eco-system needed to seed new Youth Zones into deprived communities nationally. The charity can show that the opening of a Youth Zone helps drive down antisocial behaviour and is linked to improving attendance and skills attainment in schools.

We have supported Onside Youth Zones over the last couple of years with a series of major grants. The most recent grant of £500,000 will support the building costs of a new Youth Zone in Hammersmith and Fulham.

I’m not sitting at home on an Xbox. It’s good to be with other people, learning new things and helping out.

I’ve become confident, made new friends and even got a job through the employability course.

I can now talk to people and let them know how I feel instead of bottling everything up.’’

Climbing OutClimbing Out organises and coordinates residential outdoor activity programmes in the Peak District for young people facing life-changing injury or illness. They predominantly work with young people with cancer and aim to help restore their confidence and self-esteem through challenging activities.

Our funding enabled 20 young people over two years to take part in their bespoke outdoor programme, which runs over 5 days. The programmes includes activities such as climbing, gorge scrambling, kayaking, hill walking, abseiling and raft building. All the activities are bespoke to the needs and capabilities of individual participants, so it doesn’t matter how fit the young people are, or what physical limitations they may have, all the activities are adapted to suit the group, so everyone can take part and get involved. The instructors also run personal development coaching sessions to provide the participants with tools that they can apply to life outside the programme and help them to gain their full potential.

9

You should never view your challenges as a disadvantage, instead, it’s important for you to understand that overcoming adversity is actually one of your biggest advantages. I’m able to say to myself I can and will do what I want thanks to Climbing Out. I may have lost my leg three and a half years ago but I’ve gained so much more since.

Thank you Climbing Out for the massive impact on helping me become the person I want to be.’’

You want children in school to be able to access something and compete in a friendly environment that

is set at their own ability level, regardless of whether they win or lose. As long as they are able to feel valued and that they’re contributing to the team in a positive way.

That’s precisely what Panathlon offers.’’ ‘‘

I have really enjoyed it today and it’s nice to play against people from other schools. It’s the teamwork I love. It means the world to me. I really love Panathlon.’’ ‘‘Harry, age 15, Wakefield

How we support children and young people

The Panathlon ChallengePanathlon seeks to inspire young disabled people to use sports as a means of personal and social development. The charity runs multi-sport competitions for primary and secondary school children as well as dedicated football, boccia, swimming and ten-pin bowling programmes.

The funding over five years (2016-20) is to help build the capacity of Panathlon’s sporting opportunities for disabled young people across the United Kingdom over 5 years.

Panathlon provides access to specially adapted and inclusive activities that promote teamwork and build the aspirations of those taking part. Young people, regardless of their disability, have the chance to access sport and work alongside their peers allowing them to feel less isolated and build their confidence and self-esteem.

BrainwaveBrainwave exists to help children with disabilities achieve greater independence by aiming to improve mobility, communication skills and learning potential through a range of education and physical therapies. The children have a range of conditions including autism, cerebral palsy and genetic disorders.

The grant of £101,356 over three years (2017-19) has funded the salary of the lead physiotherapist at the South West Centre in Bridgwater.

The physiotherapist works with the family to devise a unique programme, specifically designed to suit their child’s needs, which will help and encourage them to unlock their child’s potential.

Rosie has profound development delay. She now chooses where she wants to go, she has freedom when before, she would be stuck in the same position she was sat unless someone came to move her. We are even beginning to see improvement in her communication development. She has begun to sign and bring us her bib to tell us she is hungry. She makes choices and has favourite toys when before she wouldn’t play with anything.’’

How we support mental health

Our funding for mental health supports the wellbeing of young people and adults. We work with a range of charities to provide better support to those facing  mental health issues. Here are some of the projects we have funded in 2019.

BEATBEAT provides help and hope to people suffering from eating disorders of all types. The charity works to increase knowledge and awareness of eating disorders by providing online guidance and a range of workshops.

The funding over two years (2018-19) is to support training for up to 720 ‘first responder’ professionals in schools. They will work across the North East to build knowledge about eating disorders and support identified vulnerable young people.

12

One of the most informative, supportive and personal trainings I have ever attended. An informative,

compact day sharing personal experiences. Lots of experience in the room. The input from an ex-sufferer

offered such relevant views of this illness.’’ ‘‘

Changing FacesChanging Faces supports and represents people who have a visible difference to their face, hands, or body. It campaigns to change public opinion and combat discrimination. Many people with a visible difference can struggle with social anxiety and low confidence, especially as they can experience staring, comments, or unwanted attention.

The Foundation has awarded a three year grant (2019-21) to support the cost of a 1-2-1 Wellbeing service which provides support for young people aged over 16 with a visible difference experiencing mental health problems. The Wellbeing Practitioner will directly deliver a one-to-one psychosocial counselling service utilising innovative methods such as video calls and online counselling apps. This service allows participants to talk through their feelings, build up self-esteem and feel more positive as well as providing practical tools to handle everyday situations and medical advice.

At 19 years old my whole life turned upside down. I went from a young, confident, vivacious young girl to a 96% burn survivor fighting for life and for my identity. Before this happened to me, I believed that the way someone looks played a large part of what makes us who we are, and I still think that’s true. To have my appearance altered so dramatically put that all into perspective, that there is no ‘perfect’ way to look. A scar is just as beautiful as any other attribute, and I believe that it is the confidence with which you wear your scars that shows off its beauty.’’

How we are supporting the hospice network

During 2019, the St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation granted £1 million to support hospices across the UK. This was split between supporting individual hospices and our partnership with Hospice UK.

Havens HospicesHavens Hospices promotes relief for people suffering from any chronic or terminal illness via the provision of residential day care, education, training and support. We awarded a major grant to Havens Hospices as part of a major capital build project the hospice was undertaking and our funding supported the costs of three therapy rooms, which will mean families can have some privacy and time to reflect when having sensitive conversations with the care team.

14

Havens phoned me and said that it would be that day. I asked the staff what will happen, and they prepared me as best they could. They sat me down before I went into her bedroom and told me she was comfortable, that she’d take a couple of deep breaths and that’ll be it. They told me that all I could do was to be there to hold her hand. They don’t just brush you off like you’re just another number, they’re like a proper family.’’

‘‘

Kevin’s mum, Sue, was cared for by Havens Hospices before she died. The hospice hopes to be able to impact more families with the expansion of their therapy rooms.

Hospice UKFor many years, the Foundation has partnered with Hospice UK, the umbrella organisation for the hospice movement supporting 200 independent hospices throughout the country. Each year we award £500,000 to support development projects within the hospice sector. In 2019 we funded 19 hospices to improve and develop services to people with progressive lung disease.

Hospice UK aims to transform hospice care. Hospice UK’s over-arching strategy is complemented by the local strategy of each hospice and shaped by the communities they serve in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.  Our partnership with St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation helps us to implement significant change in the palliative care sector by targeting funding where it is most needed. St. James’s Place have a long history of supporting hospice services; building on this legacy, this partnership enables hospices to initiate or develop locally-delivered approaches to end of life care, tailored to the needs of their communities. The development of a sustainable heart failure palliative care service at Nightingale House Hospice in Wrexham, and a male carers support project at St Wilfrid’s Hospice in Eastbourne, are two examples of projects funded recently that widen access to hospice care.

How we support people affected by cancer

16

In 2019, the Charitable Foundation awarded 51 grants to organisations who provide practical and emotional support to people across the UK. These organisations are a lifeline not just to the patient but to a wider network of friends and family, making a big difference to the quality of life for all affected.

My son, Jameson has Medulloblastoma. He has really struggled with the side effects of both radiotherapy

and chemotherapy through the whole of his treatment. As a father, seeing my son like this was the worst thing

I could imagine, he was far from the boy who loved being out in the street, playing on his beloved bike.

After receiving his trike, Jameson wanted to be on it all the time. It has helped him build up his leg muscles and, in turn, helped his stability. He seems to have so much more energy now that he uses it regularly. It has also

helped us bond as a family, as the bombshell of Jameson’s diagnosis really took its toll on us.’’

‘‘

Christopher, Jameson’s Dad

Cyclists Fighting CancerCyclists Fighting Cancer assists children and young people with cancer across the UK to regain their physical fitness, strength, mental wellness and confidence by providing them with new bikes. They were awarded £8,900 towards their ‘Bikes and Trikes’ programme to purchase new bikes and specially-adapted trikes to improve the quality of life for children and young people facing a variety of challenges because of cancer.

The charity is passionate about sharing all the benefits of exercise and activity for people living with and beyond cancer. They encourage cycling as the best form of exercise-based rehabilitation especially for children because it provides all these benefits in a low impact, fun, sociable and exciting way.

Penny BrohnPenny Brohn aims to provide a complementary whole-person approach to transform lives, by giving people the practical tools necessary to improve their quality of life, ease side-effects from medical treatments and help manage the fear of cancer.

We supported them with a grant to fund a bespoke programme called the Loneliness Package of Care, a tailored treatment pathway aimed at reducing feelings of loneliness among people living with cancer.

The Loneliness Package of Care was created in response to recurring feedback they received from clients regarding their biggest worries surrounding their diagnosis. This project includes an introduction day, personal planning appointments, treatment support clinic, ‘Living Well with the Impact of Cancer’ residential course, short retreats, group sessions and one-to-one therapies.

We are grateful to the St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation for their support in funding a targeted package of care for cancer clients experiencing loneliness. The grant enabled us to deliver a range of retreats, courses and weekly community groups that provided people affected by cancer with a safe place which normalised their diagnoses and gave them crucial peer support. With the Foundation’s support, over 2,000 people had reduced feelings of loneliness.’’

How we are supporting charities overseas

In 2019, St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation awarded over £2 million to support charities overseas particularly those helping children and young people escape poverty, malnutrition and neglect. Our grant giving goes to projects across the world including charities in Asia that are local to our offices in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Singapore. Some of our supported projects have also enabled members of the St. James’s Place community to actively get involved through volunteering, such as helping to build schools, to improve the future prospects of hundreds of children and young people.

Supporting Nepal’s ChildrenSupporting Nepal’s Children (SNC) aims to improve education and opportunity to children in Nepal through the provision of school facilities, educational materials and infrastructure. SNC works with Non-Governmental Organisations, the local community, parents, teachers and school committees to improve school facilities in Nepal. Following the earthquake in April 2015, which devastated many areas of Nepal, this work has largely focused on rebuilding seismically safe classrooms.

The funding over three years (2018-20) has supported the building costs of a four-classroomed seismically safe school building at Rocham Lower Secondary School.

In November 2019, participants from the St. James’s Place community also took part in the Build and Trek expedition to help construct classrooms at the Narayani Secondary School near Gimdi, Nepal.

18

It’s hard to describe the multitude of emotions I experienced during the build at Narayani school which ranged from total disbelief to pure elation. Having spoken to one girl who walks to school for two hours each way – it was so refreshing to

see that she was proud and privileged to make that journey rather than complain or be critical of it. The whole experience tested our abilities but with solid teamwork we ploughed through our goals and the sole inspiration were these beautiful

smiling Nepalese kids! They all really showed an immense desire to learn, hence, I’m sure that with their own self-belief and the support we have provided through a stable and safe infrastructure, I’m confident that these kids will reach for the sky and

fulfil their own dreams. I felt very privileged, humbled and immensely proud to be a part of such a rewarding experience.’’

United World SchoolsUnited World Schools aims to improve education opportunities for some of the world’s poorest children living in remote and marginalised communities. The medium-term goal is to enrol 50,000 children in Cambodia, Myanmar and Nepal, into education.

Our funding was awarded over two years (2019-20) to support a remote community in Ratankari Province, Cambodia. It will bring education to 250 children in a remote, ethnic-minority community. There is a generation of children and young adults who have never attended school. They are beyond the reach of the government education system that does not cater for non-Khmer speakers, and their traditional ways of life are being threatened by widespread deforestation. This project will enable communities to feel less isolated, marginalised and vulnerable. Education is becoming increasingly vital in their future.

19

I am happy to have good schools (UWS school) with the resources equipped and the children able to finish primary school for secondary school. The community and children understand the value of the education, and the children are especially happy with study games and interactive learning.’’

Boys’ TownBoys’ Town serves both boys and girls, from infants to young adults in Singapore. It helps children and youths who come from disadvantaged and disengaged families who may have faced hardship resulting from difficult home situations, financial struggles, abandonment, and abuse.

A grant of £5,000 has supported the development programme for boys under residential services care. The team of programme supervisors organise an array of outdoor and recreational activities from sports, art, music to outreach. They also collaborate with community and corporate partners to provide support and learning opportunities.

Boys’ Town equips children and young people in need with skills to become socially integrated, responsible and contributing members of society.

Heart to HeartHeart to Heart is a Shanghai-based charity that provides corrective surgery for Chinese children with congenital heart disease whose parents are unable to afford the surgery.

The funding of £6,150 has contributed to the Heart Surgery Sponsorship Programme. To date Heart to Heart has sponsored 1,528 children for heart surgery. The surgeries have not only saved lives, but have transformed the lives of the families.

20

The St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation has been a supporter of Boys’ Town since 2018. We are grateful for the funding provided to supplement our residential youths’ leadership and development camps. In addition, St. James’s Place has been an enthusiastic partner in engaging our youths through soccer and participating in our futsal competitions.’’

Love 21 FoundationLove 21 Foundation believes that everyone should have the opportunity to reach their full potential. The charity is dedicated to bettering the lives of those living with Down’s Syndrome and Autism through physical activity and nutrition.

A grant of £2,500 helped provide nutritious and healthy food boxes for the Down’s Syndrome and Autistic community in Hong Kong, to complement their programme of sporting activities also offered.

The charity believe that more can be achieved with the right nutrition and lifestyle.

Members of the St. James’s Place community have competed in football matches and other sporting events with young people from Love 21.

For the past three years, we have offered numerous sporting activities for the Down’s Syndrome and Autistic community in Hong Kong with the aim of improving the health and wellbeing. However, we realise that sport alone is not enough to support a healthy lifestyle. Thanks to the St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation we were able to complement this work by providing a box of organic vegetables every week to over 60 families we support in the city.’’

How we are supporting natural disaster appeals

The St. James’s Place community has responded to two appeals during 2019. Within a short amount of time, thousands of pounds were raised to support the relief effort for Cyclone Idai in South West Africa and Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas.

Cyclone IdaiOn Friday 15 March, we heard the devastating news that Cyclone Idai had hit South West Africa triggering widespread flooding and devastation. Cyclone Idai swept through Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe, leaving behind a trail of destruction, killing hundreds and affecting an estimated 2.6 million people. Houses, roads and bridges were ripped apart and agricultural land completely submerged. More than 600 people were confirmed dead, 1,600 injured and 1.8 million people were affected resulting in $773 million in damages to buildings, infrastructure and agriculture. The UN states that this was one of the worst weather-related disasters on record in the southern hemisphere.

The St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation put out an appeal following this disaster and the community of St. James’s Place responded raising £36,865.00 (with matching) for the Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC). As a result, the DEC were able to work closely with national partners in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe to support the relief effort, deliver emergency shelter kits, food, water purification tablets and urgent health assistance.

Hurricane DorianHurricane Dorian was an extremely powerful and devastating Category 5 Atlantic hurricane, that became the most intense tropical cyclone on record to strike the Bahamas, and is regarded as the worst natural disaster in the country’s history. It was also one of the most powerful hurricanes recorded in the Atlantic Ocean in terms of 1-minute sustained winds, with these winds peaking at 185 mph. Dorian struck the Abaco Islands on 1 September with maximum sustained winds of 185 mph. Resultant damage to these islands was catastrophic; most structures were flattened or swept to sea, and at least 70,000 people were left homeless. After it ravaged through the Bahamas, Dorian proceeded along the coasts of the south-eastern United States and Atlantic Canada, leaving behind considerable damage and economic losses in those regions.

Damage in the Bahamas was catastrophic due to the prolonged and intense storm conditions, including heavy rainfall, high winds and storm surge, with thousands of homes destroyed and many died. Dorian is by far the costliest disaster in Bahamian history, estimated to have left behind $3.4 billion in damage.

The St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation put out an appeal following this disaster and the community of St. James’s Place responded raising £8,860 (with matching) for Team Rubicon. As a result, Team Rubicon activated a World Health Organization Type 1 Mobile Emergency Medical Team and responded to Great Abaco Island. The team provided medical care, emergency supplies, emergency shelters, food and water.

Children of Courage

The Children of Courage Awards celebrate the achievement of children and young people for the extra special efforts they make and the contribution they give within their community, despite adversity.

In 2019 we held two successful Awards events in Newcastle and Leeds to acknowledge and thank some very special young people.

The Awards are a star studded night to remember with celebrity guests, friends and ambassadors attending alongside the award winners family, carers and representatives of partner charities.

24

It is an amazing evening recognising the courage and achievements of some of the community’s finest young people. The awards attract nominations for some truly inspirational children and young adults whose lives have often been affected by illness or extreme adversity.

The 10th year ceremony is set to be something very special indeed!’’

Fundraising highlights

Each year, thousands of the St. James’s Place community go over and above to support the Charitable Foundation through taking part in events, taking on a new challenge and generously donating their time or money. Throughout 2019, so many of the St. James’s Place community have helped to organise a variety of fundraising activities, both big and small. Without this, we would not be able to continue making a positive and lasting difference to the charities that we support through our grants programme. Thank you!’’
