The people we serve fill our heart.

My younger son was fortunate enough to have an assessment done by Glenwood when he was in preschool. His diagnosis from Glenwood was a vital component in qualifying him for special education services in the Homewood school system when he entered kindergarten. The comprehensive assessment provided recommendations for pragmatic language and occupational therapy resources. Additionally, Glenwood worked diligently with the preschool staff to help them work with children with autism spectrum disorder. The assessment laid the foundation for my son’s success. He is now in second grade and has benefited from services including a full-time aid since entering public school. I cannot express how blessed our family was to have his initial assessment provided by Glenwood.

One Mom’s Grateful Heart

The hearts featured throughout the annual report were created by Glenwood residents with volunteers from Church of the Highlands and

Drummond Campany using simple coffee filters and magic markers.

Glenwood staff serve from their hearts.

If a smile goes a long way, you can ride a million miles on Jan Woodward’s. Jan works as a Program Coordinator in Adult Services at Glenwood. Fueled by a servant’s heart, he knows that the work he and his team manage help people we serve do things they can’t do for themselves.

Approaching 32 years at Glenwood, Jan has made it his life’s work to help others. Often,

his team’s days include helping with hygiene, dressing, community integration, feeding and shopping for some 80 adults who live in homes managed by Glenwood.

“At the end of the day, it feels good to know I was able to help someone who needed help,” says Jan. “Enhancing the quality of life for people is just so rewarding. Individuals with autism want to be treated like we all do, with dignity and respect.”

The primary reason he has worked so long with those on the severe end of the autism spectrum is because he knows he can help. The second reason is because of the support from the Glenwood team who make it possible, professionally and personally, for him to do his job.

Jan shared that caring for individuals with autism can be on a “minute by minute basis. Just being there, tying someone’s shoelaces or taking them somewhere - whether bowling or going out to eat - it’s great to see how happy it makes them.”

Donors give from the heart.

One family whose son lives in a Glenwood home was so grateful to direct care staff that they wanted to find a way to say thank you. Working directly with individuals with severe autism or behavior disorders requires compassion, skill and training. This parent knew the challenges they faced daily and wanted them to know their work is appreciated. He had t-shirts designed to give as a gift to every staff member, resident, and student at Glenwood that said “thank you for being a blessing.”
