Dear Friends-

2018 was an extraordinary year at The Mini Time Machine Museum; 50,450 patrons engaging with the museum through a visit or program in 2018- a record for TMTM! The museum received grants from foundations, government supported arts agencies, and individuals which provided funding support for our exhibitions and programs. This enabled us to present eleven temporary exhibitions featuring miniature art created by local, national, and internationally recognized artists. The year began with an exhibit of the tiniest artwork we have presented yet- micro-miniature sculptures, many not more than 1/16” tall, carved from the graphite of pencils. On Point: Sculptures on the Tips of Lead Pencils, opened February 1st and captured the attention and imagination of more than 12,441 people while on display. If you missed this exhibit, you are in luck– thanks to donations to the museum’s Collection Fund, we were able to purchase four of these pieces which will go on display this coming September!

As we approach the 10-year mark, we are proud of what individuals, foundations, and granting agencies have helped us accomplish. Record attendance and donations of all sizes allowed us to maintain and grow our interpretive programs so that more young visitors could enjoy Tiny Tales for Tots, Kids Create, Tinker Workshops, and participate in summer camp in 2018, among other programs. Thanks to support from a generous sponsor, we were able to provide more full-tuition summer camp scholarships than ever before. Through a grant from the National Miniature Trust and funds from individuals, we were also able to add new interactive experiences in the galleries including a touchscreen kiosk. With our 10-year Anniversary on the horizon, we are planning to introduce three more touchscreens in 2019, update several permanent collection exhibits, and add a special interactive space that will surprise and delight you!

Our reputation has grown so that we are regularly touted as a “must-see” attraction by travel and leisure journalists. Knowing we are a one-of-a-kind Tucson treasure, we want to provide more opportunities for people to visit the museum and participate in programs for little or no cost. To that end, we participated in the Culture Pass, Blue Star Museums, and joined Museum’s for All in 2018; coupled with in-house initiatives, we offered ten unique programs that provided reduced and free admission to community members in 2018. Your continued donations ensure the museum will be able to provide meaningful miniature magic for even more members of our community.

Thank you for your generosity to the museum these last nine years. I look forward to celebrating 10-years in the community with you in September!

Lisa Hastreiter-Lamb, Executive Director

Scenes from Salvaged Scraps: Debbie Gill’s Miniature Rooms, June 5 through August 26, 2018

Jean Leroy’s Buzzard Creek Ghost Town, September 24 through November 4, 2018

Tucson locals often ask us if we remember the mechanized miniatures that were displayed at Hidden Valley Inn Restaurant in the 1980s. We are happy to tell them that we do remember the miniatures, and the daughter of Jean Leroy, who created those popular dioramas, is a friend of the museum. In fact, Judy Siegling and her husband Fred, have generously loaned her father’s Buzzard Creek Ghost Town to the museum during the month of October for the last three years.

Automata: Miniature Mechanized Narratives, The Michael Croft Collection, October 4, 2018 through January 27, 2019

Collector and artist Michael Croft generously loaned his personal collection of miniature mechanized automata for exhibit. In addition to sharing his whimsical collection, Michael sponsored a printed gallery guide, provided several gallery-talks and taught a workshop, all gratis.

Acquisitions

Donations to the Museum’s Acquisition Fund from numerous individuals allowed the museum to purchase four pieces from our popular exhibit On Point: Sculptures on the Tips of Lead Pencils.

Collection

With new acquisitions to share, we can rotate permanent collection exhibits and give artifacts a needed rest in storage to limit their exposure to light and preserve their beauty for posterity. Your donation will help us bring new and exciting miniatures like these to Tucson for everyone to enjoy!

Debuts in the History Gallery

Visitors can now tap a touchscreen located at the John Bellemy Complex in the History Gallery to explore rooms in the house that you would otherwise not be able to see, watch a video about the design and creation of the landscape, as well as access other previously exclusive information about the piece.

The touchscreen was made possible thanks to donations made by individuals on Giving Tuesday 2017, matched with a previous $5,000 grant from the National Miniature Trust.

TMTM acquired an antique automata house with matching funds from an anonymous donor in 2017. The mechanism that puts the piece in motion needed restoration.

Thanks to the generosity of Michael Croft and his wife Eleanor Moty, who donated expertise, materials and volunteered their time to restore the mechanism, the piece went on display in the fall of 2018 and can be made operable for occasional demonstrations.

Programs

Program support allows us to provide the quality programming you love that makes Tucson a great place to live and visit. Successful programs such as Kids Create, Summer Camp, Tiny Tales for Tots, Tinker Workshops, Outreach, and School Tours all rely on our professional museum staff and resources.

DONATE TO PROGRAMS

Thanks to program sponsorship from Merry Lewis, Fairy Caitlin and her friends shared stories and sang songs with 559 little tikes and their families during Tiny Tales Storytime in 2018. With the help of this sponsorship, the museum was able to add several Saturday mornings to the program schedule, allowing working families the opportunity to participate in this popular story time too!

In 2018, Thanks to funding support from the Connie Hillman Family Foundation and individual donors, 700 community members from schools and family service organizations were provided free admission and transportation funding through the museum’s mini grant program, Sizing Up My World.

School Tours2,055 children, teachers and chaperones participated in a school tour in 2018

DONATE TO PROGRAMS

Kids Create, our monthly make-and-take program for school-aged children, was supported by proceeds from the 2018 Tucson Miniature Showcase. The Tucson Miniature Showcase is an annual show and sale presented by the Southern Arizona Miniature Enthusiasts–now known as the Tucson Miniature Society (TMS). Thank you TMS for supporting the museum’s Kids Create program which fosters creativity in children!

120 children participated in our eight half-day summer camp sessions creating miniature scenes. With a generous donation from Merry Lewis and additional funds from the Halle family, we were able to award 14 full-tuition summer camp scholarships to children from low income families in 2018. That is 12% of available seats in the program!

AcknowledgmentsSpecial thanks to Jessica Andrews for service on our Board of Directors. Jessica completed her three-year term in December 2018, but her relationship with the museum goes back to 2013– when she was enlisted to help the museum transition from a family-based board to a community board, on the path to public charity. Jessica lead a succession-planning program sponsored by the Tucson Pima Arts Council (currently the Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona) that was funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. Jessica also held the position of Board Treasurer in 2018. Thank you, Jessica, for six years of advocacy and service to the museum!

Business Manager, Katy Kearney, retired in December 2018, after five years of service to the museum. Katy’s warm heart and passionate nature brought lots of spirit to the office. Thank you, Katy, for five fabulous years as our Business Manager!

Tucson treasures, such as our good food and sunsets, are recognized and valued for making our community unique. The Mini Time Machine Museum has also been acknowledged as a Tucson treasure, bringing one-of-kind, world-class exhibits of miniature art right here to our own backyard. Every day, men, women and children visiting the Museum are amazed at the detail and magic of our miniatures.

In 2019, The Mini Time Machine Museum will celebrate its 10th anniversary! Established in 2009 as a non-profit 501(C)3, the museum was initially a private family foundation set up by Patricia and Walter Arnell. It was their vision that the museum would become a non-profit with public charity status. We continue to work toward this goal and our volunteer board has matured and diversified to include miniaturists, educators, professionals in several areas, as well as representatives of our founders’ family. Among our accomplishments in 2018, the board and staff completed a comprehensive strategic plan with the help of a grant from Tucson Foundations. We are committed to our values and are excited about goals that will enable us to share this special artform with visitors for the next decade, and beyond.

Please join me in keeping up our momentum with your support and attendance. If you haven’t been to the Museum recently, please plan a visit soon! Introduce this delightful experience to your friends! And, consider donating so that we may continue to grow this intriguing, very unique art form, and bring more exciting exhibits in the future.

Thank you for your friendship and patronage,

Leilani RothrockBoard President
