    AWARDS AND COMPETITIONS

    AMERICANCONCRETEINSTITUTECOMPETITION

    Congratulations to the civil engineering third-yearundergraduate students who were runners-up in theAmerican Concrete Institute (ACI) competition. The teamconsisted of Mahmoud Al-Fayez, Osama Al-Mohammedi,Motasem Aljawhary and Muaawia Janoudy working underthe technical advisor, Dr. Medhat Shehata. Teams werechallenged to give a recommendation on producing a 100 x40 foot concrete slab on-grade with minimum shrinkage andsubmit their recommendation in a report to the ConstructionLiaison Committee. The teams recommendations includeda optimized mix design incorporating a shrinkage reducingadmixture that was economic, easy to use, and effectiveenough for the application.

    2013 TORONTOURBANDESIGNCOMPETITION

    FEAS architectural science students won Awards of Meriin the 2013 Toronto Urban Design competition, studenprojects category. The undergraduate group project AnArchitecture of Civility was the joint effort of approximately400 architectural science students in all years (working inteams of 12 14 ) who acted as Citizen Architects, undethe direction of Prof. George Kapelos, along with Master oArchitecture students acting as Community Voices, TeamFacilitators and Project Coordinators, and ArchitecturaScience faculty members acting as Design ChampionsMaster of Architecture student Melody Taghi-Poor alsoreceived an award for her project In Search of Place. Heproject supervisor was Prof. Masha Etkind.

    APPOINTMENTS

    ASSISTANTPROFESSOR

    Dr. Goetz Bramesfeld has joined Ryerson as an AssistantProfessor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering.His research interest is applied aerodynamcis and aircraftdesign with a primary focus on small unmanned aerial

    vehicles. He is currently investigating nonconventialight manoeuvers that are possible with this relativelynew category of aircraft, for example the challenges andopportunities of ight in a highly gusty environment. Otherrecent research projects include autonomous soaring onplanet Uranus and performance predictions of blue whales.Prior to joining Ryerson, Dr. Bramesfeld was an Assistant

    Professor at Saint LouisUniversity in Missouri.Before that, he completedhis graduate work atPennsylvania StateUniversity. His hobby isying sailplanes. New toOntario, Dr. Bramesfeld,his wife and two sons arelooking forward to manyfun canoe and hikingtrips.

    ASSISTANTPROFESSOR

    The Department of Civil Engineering welcomes Dr. SerhanGuner, who has joined FEAS as an Assistant Professor.Dr Guner has research interests in nonlinear analysisof concrete structures, shear effects in concrete, andstructural dynamics and response to impact, blast and

    earthquake loads. Prior tojoining Ryerson, Dr. Gunerworked as a practicingstructural engineer forve years at MorrisonHersheld, in addition toteaching at the Universityof Toronto as an AdjunctProfessor. He received hisPhD from the University ofToronto in 2008. Dr. Gunerenjoys high-intensity cardioworkouts, nutritious foodand traveling.

    ASSOCIATEPROFESSOR

    Dr. Stephen Waldman has joined FEAS as an AssociateProfessor in the Department of Chemical Engineeringwith research interests in cartilage tissue engineering andthe surgical repair of cartilage for both orthopaedic andotolaryngologic applications. His current projects focus onthe resurfacing of damaged joint cartilage in the knee andthe reconstruction of the ear and trachea. Dr. Waldman isalso an Associate Scientist of the Li Ka Shing KnowledgeInstitute of St. Michaels Hospital where his laboratoryis located. Prior to joining Ryerson, Dr. Waldman wasan Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair aQueens University for the last ten years, and a recentVisiting Professor at theBioengineering Departmentof the University of California,Berkeley. Dr. Waldmandid his post-doctoral and

    graduate training at severalinstitutions includingMount Sinai Hospital, theUniversity of Toronto,Dalhousie University andQueens University. Heenjoys traveling, music andspending time with his wifeand two girls.

    Dr. Farhad Ein-Mozaffari (Chemical Engineering) has been

    Dr. Medhat Shehata (Civil Engineering) was appointed theTeaching Chair for FEAS. The TeachingChair program isa university-wide initiative that began in 2010 to cultivateand promote teaching excellence and enhance the studenlearning experience. This inuential position reects theimportance of teaching and learning in FEAS.

    Congratulations to Dr. Ravi Ravindran (Mechanical andIndustrial Engineering) who received the 2013 MetSocAward for Research Excellence from the Metallurgy andMaterials Society (MetSoc) of the Canadian Institute ofMining and Metallurgy and Petroleum.     Dr. Xavier Fernando (Electrical and Computer Engineering)obtained close to $130,000 for the project WirelessPerformance Monitoring of Plug-in Electric Vehicules.

    Dr. Ling Guan (Electrical and Computer Engineering)secured $400,000 for the project An Intelligent RenderingFramework for Adaptive Mixed Reality Applications onCanadas Historic Heritage Sites. Dr. Guan will work withthree post-doctorate fellows and industry partner AWECompany Limited.

    Dr. Ramani Ramakrishnan (Architectural Science)obtained $35,000 for the project Effects of the installationof wind turbines in the West Lincoln Township of NiagaraRegion and will work with the Regional Municipality ofNiagara.

    Dr. Shudong Yu (Mechanical and Industrial Engineering)received approximately $135,000. Dr. Yu and threestudents will work with industry partner Candu Energy Inc.on the project Modelling vibration of 37-element CANDU

    fuel string in an aged pressure tube.

    Dr. Alagan Anpalagan (Electrical and ComputerEngineering) received $25,000 for the project WirelessSensor based Real-time Data Acquisition and StateAnalysis in a Machining System. He will work with industrypartner Mtech Limited.

    Dr. Bhole Sanjiwan (Mechanical and Industrial Engineering)obtained $24,500 for the project Characterization andoptimization of ceramic coatings for industrial furnaceenvironments. The industry partner is Furnace MineraProducts Inc.

    Dr. Joon Chung (Aerospace Engineering) receivedapproximately $24,000 for the project Development oIntegrated Flight Data Generation System for FlightscapeInsightTM and will work with industry partner CAEFlightscape.

    STRATEGIC INITIATIVES

    ST. MICHAELSHOSPITAL

    The agreement with St. Michaels Hospital for use ofresearch space in the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institutehas been nalized. FEAS faculty, Drs. Dae Kun Hwangand Stephen Waldman (Chemical Engineering), SriKrishnan, Beau Standish and Karthi Umpathy (Electricaland Computer Engineering), and Habiba Bougherara,Mark Towler and Scott Tsai (Mechanical and IndustrialEngineering) were previously appointed as associateprofessors with St. Michaels Hospital and will haveresearch facilities there. A tour of the common researchfacilities took place on September 19.

    KARLSRUHEUNIVESITY

    Representatives from Karlsruhe Univesity of AppliedSciences in Germany visited Ryerson to renew its doubledegree exchange agreement on September 13. Prior to

    the signing, the representatives visited FEAS to tour theCentre for Urban Energy and review groundbreakingresearch by Drs. Ling Guan and Sri Krishnans (Electricaland Computer Engineering) graduate students, amongother activities.

    Delegates from Northwestern Polytechnical University in China visited FEAS on September 6. The agreement facilitates joint research and the exchange of academic and research staff or graduate students.

    The creation of a new Schneider Electric Smart GridLaboratory is the focus of several articles given that theuniversity laboratory is the rst of its kind in Canada. The
