Foundation Golf Tournaments boast record breaking totals The Co-Lin Foundation’s annual Golf Classics in Natchez and Wesson each held re-cord breaking years in raising funds for schol-arships and program support at the college, pulling in over $9,000 and $14,500 respec-tively.

Natchez Classic Seventy-six golfers took to the fairways and greens for the 10th Annual Copiah-Lin-coln Community College Foundation Nat-chez Classic Golf Tournament, held at Beau Pre’ Country Club in April. This year was one of the largest turnouts since the tournament began. Charlotte Hill, executive director of the Co-Lin Foundation, said the event was the most successful one ever. “And that’s due to the hard work of our Natchez Foundation board members: Bill Salters, Woody Allen, Andrew Calvit and Terry Estes.” Winners of the low gross award were one of the three teams sponsored by Peoples Bank of the South, consisting of Donny Spears, Larry Hill, Bart Jones and Bill Scott. “We probably had 12 holes where we didn’t have to putt,” said Larry Hill. The low net award went to Franklin Coun-ty Memorial Hospital’s team which included

Sonny Dickey, Rickey King, Ben Yarborough and Trey Dickey. The corporate team award went to players Randy Martin, Johnny Monroe, Bob Hyer and Raymond Steele, also sponsored by Peoples Bank of the South. They scored 54, 18 under par. Other businesses and organizations who played in the tournament were Natchez Com-

munity Hospital, Alcorn State University School of Business, Isle of Capri Casino, Concordia Bank, Meason Operating, Rent-ech, B&K Bank, Atmos Energy, Big M Supply, Black Jack Oil, Byrne Insurance, Co-Lin Wes-son Campus and Co-Lin Natchez Campus. Several individual teams also par-ticipated.

Wesson Classic Peoples Bank of the South Team 1 captured the cor-porate championship in the 17th Annual Copiah-Lin-coln Community College Foundation Golf Classic held at Wolf Hollow Golf Club. The team of Don Alford, Bob Hyer, Robbie Shell, and Eric Smith shot an 18-under par 54 to take the President’s Cup. Valley won the Low Net championship with a score of 48.9. Members of the team include Craig Hen-nington, Elmer McInnis,

Allen Kent, and Jim Walt. The Entergy team led by Don Coleman, Kenny Goza, Chandler Russ, and John Wes-ley captured the Low Gross championship with a 55. On-course winners included Elmer McIn-nis - closest to the pin on No. 4, Gerry Boone - closest to the pin No. 14, Parish Stewart – closest to the pin No. 11, and Brandon Hub-bard – closest to the pin No. 8. “We had a beautiful day for the tourna-ment,” said Hill. “We want to thank all the people who participated and all the businesses that contributed to making it such a success-ful event.” Twenty-nine teams participated in this year’s event. The Co-Lin Foundation pro-vides over $100,000 in scholarships to over 140 Co-Lin students and faculty.

PACK Support Co-Lin.

The Annual Fund Campaign Co-Lin’s Annual Fund Campaign is an opportunity for you to invest in Copiah-Lincoln Community College and the peo-ple it serves. Gifts from people like you combined with other private resources and state funding enable the College to provide an atmosphere in which students are chal-lenged and encouraged. Your gift will help bridge the gap be-tween Co-Lin’s essential needs and avail-able funding. Private support from in-dividuals like you makes the difference between a budget that provides a minimal level of support for teaching and faculty development and a budget that means an enhanced educational experience that goes beyond the ordinary. Will you please join with me to make up that vital margin needed to continue Co-Lin as one of the outstanding commu-nity colleges in Mississippi?

- Dr. Ronnie NettlesPresident

Why an Annual Fund? In recent years, state support has ac-counted for a smaller and smaller por-tion of Co-Lin’s total operating budget, yet competition for top faculty and stu-dents has never been more intense. Con-sequently, Co-Lin has had to increase its level of private support. Co-Lin’s long range plan to become an even better college will require increased program support, professional develop-ment opportunities for faculty and staff and expanded facilities. Despite contin-ued funding needs, Copiah-Lincoln Com-munity College has met the challenge and established a strong reputation for excel-lence. Your college needs your help to fur-ther these accomplishments.

Any gift from you will make a difference

at Co-Lin.

How your gift will help It is certainly true that tax dollars as-sist Copiah-Lincoln Community College. It is also true that no college ever became great with public funding alone. Co-Lin’s goal is to be the best educational institu-tion of its kind in Mississippi. We have a great beginning...we need your help to continue. The size of your gift is not as impor-tant as the fact that you do give. What might seem small to you, when grouped together with other gifts, can make a real difference.

Beginning in January, the an-nual alumni magazine, The Colinian, will be sent to dues-paying members of the alumni association only. Previously, the publication was sent to everyone in the alumni database, which includes alumni, employees and friends of the college. The change was brought about by college budget constraints. “We regret to have to restrict our mailings of The Colinian, but like every other department on campus, we had to make cuts somewhere,” said Angela Furr, Associate Director of Alumni Affairs. “We hope this will en-

courage more people to join the alumni association, which will, in turn, benefi t Co-Lin as a whole.” To make sure you don’t miss The Colinian, join the alumni as-sociation today. Dues are $25 for an individual, $40 for a couple or $250 for lifetime membership. Where are they now?

Rosemary Owens Bishop was a smart girl from rural Lincoln County who

enjoyed singing and made lots of friends dur-ing her time at Co-Lin. She became close with one particular friend, Tillmon Bishop (’75), and the two married shortly after graduation. While at Co-Lin, she participated in Student Government, choir, Sojourners, and was president of Phi Theta Kappa. She was cho-sen as a homecoming maid her sophomore year and was selected to Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges. “I enjoyed my time at Co-Lin. I met and married my best friend. I enjoyed the classes, instructors and activities there. I will never forget try-ing out for and being chosen to play the part of Rosie Alvarez in the musical, Bye, Bye Birdie,” Bishop said. “This was completely against my intro-vert nature, and I still can’t believe I did that. The craziest thing was that Tillmon tried out for the part of Albert (and got it) so nobody else could kiss me!” After Co-Lin, Bishop graduated from The University of Mississippi School of Health Related Professions with a Bachelor’s degree in physical therapy. Today she works part-time as a physical therapist at Kings Daugh-ters Therapy Center in Brookhaven. She and her husband, Tillmon have been married for 35 years and they have three children, Mat-thew, Michael and Anna, and two grandchil-dren, Abby and Parker, who are both enrolled in the Co-Lin Childcare Program. Their mother, Michael’s wife, Tonya, works at Co-Lin as the college recruiter. Bishop is active at Heucks Retreat Baptist Church, where she is a member of the choir. In her spare time, she enjoys reading and spending time with her grandchildren.

Eddie Hobson has had a 16-year career in the Natchez-area banking busi-

ness, and was working full-time while attend-ing Co-Lin, where he was a non-traditional student with a 14-year break between high school and Co-Lin. He recalls taking classes on his lunch break from the bank, rushing to Co-Lin, and rushing back, then returning after

work for more classes. “My experience was great,” Hobson said. “I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Working and going to school, and paying for it all myself was an eye-opening experience. It was a chal-lenge.” Even though his time was limited while attending college, Hobson found time to par-ticipate in campus activities, including Phi Theta Kappa and Delta Epsilon Chi. After Co-Lin, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in education, then a Master’s degree in second-ary education at Alcorn State University. He taught reading classes at Alcorn’s Natchez campus from 2000 to 2005. Today Hobson wears many hats at Britton & Koontz First National Bank in Natchez. “I have a smorgasbord of different duties,” he said. “I’m all over the place, but I love what I do.” His titles attest to that statement. He serves as Assistant Vice President and Loan Offi cer, Area Branch Operations Manger, and Assistant Branch Manager. Hobson credits Co-Lin with affecting his life. “It was a learning experience, and a big part of my maturity and growth,” Hobson said. “I loved all of my teachers; they were very inspirational. For example, I remember when I fi rst took Gerri Brown’s (psychology) class. She didn’t take mediocre performance; you had to know what you were talking about; being charming wouldn’t work in her class.”Other instructors he remembers fondly are Kenneth Taylor, Judy Wiggins, and Robert Smith. “Those were teach-ers,” he said. “It’s a family oriented school. All the teachers knew me whether I was in their class or not, the staff, too. All the teachers cared for every student. I wound up with some of the most qualifi ed teachers, and some of the skills I learned I’m still using today.” Hobson is a member of the New Beginnings Missionary Baptist Church where he serves as organ-ist. He is also a member of the Rho Epsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Frater-nity Inc., which he serves as treasurer.

Cerise Marshall was one of the most recognizable faces on campus dur-

ing her time at Co-Lin. She was selected as a member of the Hall of Fame and partici-pated in numerous campus activities, such as Afro-American Plus Club, which she served as president. She served as vice president of publicity for Phi Theta Kappa and president of the Modern Foreign Language Club. She was a member of Sigma Kappa Delta, Trailblazers, Martial Arts Club, and Colettes. She was se-lected as a Home-coming maid and a campus favorite. After Co-Lin, Marshall earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Southern Missis-sippi in broadcast journalism and a Master of Arts degree from Clark Atlanta Univer-sity in English. Following gradu-ation, she interned for ABC News Southern Bureau in Atlanta and worked as a Pro-posal Writer for Walgreens Corporate Offi ce in Chicago. Her most memorable times at Co-Lin in-cluded the community service projects she participated in with campus organizations. “I enjoyed being mentored by Mr. and Mrs. Sut-ton, Mrs. Barnes, Mrs. Davis, Mr. Ray, and Mrs. Speights,” Marshall said. “I cherish the memories of performing as a Colette and be-ing selected as a Homecoming maid.” She also has fond memories of the family atmo-sphere at Co-Lin among her peers, faculty and staff. Today, she lives in Atlanta, Ga, where she is employed by the Department of Veterans Affairs as a Ratings Specialist and is also an Adjunct English Instructor at Georgia Perim-eter College. She is a member of Alpha Kap-pa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and enjoys attending church, doing community service, traveling and reading.
