IMMUNE SYSTEM
April 2010
OBJECTIVES SWBAT explain the cause of infectious
disease and identify the organisms that cause diseases
SWBAT describe how pathogens enter the body
DO NOW: Brainstorm a list of familiar diseases.
divide list into those that you think can be spread from one person to another and those that can’t.
ACTIVITY Shake hands with three people. Each person shakes with three more, and
so on
How does the apple skin protect it?
DISEASE AND PATHOGENS Organisms that cause disease are
called pathogens
Infectious disease can be spread from one organism to another
FOUR PATHOGENS
Bacteria – one celled organisms. Ex. Strep, ear infections, pneumonia
Virus- tiny particles which cannot reproduce on their own. Must live in another cell – living or not living questionable. Cells damaged, ex cold and flu. Chicken pox and aids
Fungi – molds yeasts etc – athletes foot, yeast infection thrush
Protists- protists cause malaria
BACTERIA – ONE CELLED ORGANISMS. EX. STREP, EAR INFECTIONS, PNEUMONIA
Virus- tiny particles which cannot reproduce on their own. Must live in another cell – living or not living questionable. Cells damaged, ex cold and flu. Chicken pox and aids
FUNGI – molds yeasts etc – athletes foot, yeast infection thrush

HOW DISEASES SPREAD You can get pathogens from other people contaminated objects animal or insect bite Environment

OBJECTIVE: SWBAT DESCRIBE HOW THE BODY DEFENDS ITSELF AGAINST PATHOGENS
LEVEL 1 RESPONSE: KEEP OUT!Most pathogens are trapped on the way
into the body by the
Skin breathing passages mouthstomach tears
OBJECTIVE: SWBAT DESCRIBE HOW THE BODY DEFENDS ITSELF AGAINST PATHOGENS
LEVEL 2 RESPONSE: INFLAMMATORY RESPONSEFluid and blood cells leak from blood vessels into
nearby tissues. The white blood cells then fight the pathogens.
Phagocytes are a type of white blood cell that engulfs or eats pathogens. They are NOT specific to the type of pathogen.
As blood leaks into the area it gets red and hot and swollen. Inflammation – “flamed”
Fever
OBJECTIVE: SWBAT DESCRIBE HOW THE BODY DEFENDS ITSELF AGAINST PATHOGENS
LEVEL 3 RESPONSE: IMMUNE RESPONSE Cells can distinguish between different kinds of
pathogens and respond with a targeted cell. Lymphocytes - white blood cells which
are specific to pathogen
T-cells: Tag and identify pathogen and call for help. Also destroy infected body cells
B-cells: Make antiBodies which fit to specific antigen and make virus clump up to be destroyed by phagocytes
OBJECTIVE: SWBAT DESCRIBE HOW THE BODY DEFENDS ITSELF AGAINST PATHOGENS
LEVEL 3 RESPONSE: IMMUNE RESPONSE Memory cells: remember and recognize
pathogen to make immune response for next time invader comes around.
