Received? Most were welcomed, some restrictions on rights such as testifying in court and owning land

Why? Escape disease and famine (potato) drawn by tales of gold and opportunity

Received? English were resentful these newcomers took away their jobs. Founders were anti-Catholic, churches were burned

Received? – 1882 all Chinese laborers were banned
