Immersion: Site-Specific Installation Due: April 2-25 (Sign up for a date!)

site (verb)

fix or build something in a particular placeAs a class, we will use 2x4’s and plywood or particleboard to buildan 8-foot cube that can be put in a public location and used for site-specific installations over the course of the next few weeks. Eachstudent will be allotted a short amount of time to install, exhibit and

then deinstall a project over a period of 1-7 days (there are 24available days in total). The time allowed for each project will bedetermined by whether you choose to work alone or collaboratewith your classmates,

Your goal should be to transform our perception of space. Think about ways you can immerse the viewer in an art environment.Based on your interests, you may use light, sound, found or cast

objects, wall/floor/ceiling treatment, pattern, repetition, scale, perspective, and interaction. You are encouraged to use the skillsand processes you’ve learned in the class to date (woodworking, welding, paper making, mold making and casting). However, that is not required.

The class will need to design the cube/gallery in a way that the walls, ceiling and floors can be detached orrearranged to allow for customization. For instance, some groups may want to leave the ceiling space open and force

viewers to look down on the space from ladders outside of the walls. Others may want one entire wall removed so that the space becomes more like a stage. And others may want to cut a normal doorway into one of the walls, orperhaps a small “doggy door” that viewers are forced to climb through in order to enter.

You will be required to formally present your idea(s) and requested time frame to the class on Thursday, April 1 st, atwhich point we will sign up for dates to use the space. The group or individual with the most concrete ideas (as votedupon by the group) will begin installing on April 2 nd.  Time/Dedication/Research – 20%

After April 2nd, regular class will only be held until 2pm,after which time students will meet with the instructoror TA individually based on a consistent, prearrangedschedule. You will be expected to use the rest of theclass time to conduct individual research, rework projects for the Manufactured Landscapes exhibition, and work towards completing your mold makingassignment.

Individual meeting expectations: You should be

prepared to show progress at every individualmeeting, in order to prove that class time is not beingwasted at the Moka Joka. Progress may be in theform of printed research, drawings, models, or other

tangible evidence. You will receive credit for that work based on the check, check plus, or check minus foreach meeting, which will contribute to your overallgrade.

Craftsmanship – 10%

The way you craft your installation should be intentional andappropriate to your concept.

Concept – 30%

You will be in complete control over how a viewerexperiences the space, so make sure you put yourself “in their shoes”, so to speak. Make sure each decision you makehas been given ample consideration.

Presentation – 30%

Since this is an installation, the execution of the finalpresentation is the most important aspect. Not onlyshould the viewer be immersed, but you should be aswell… (only a short amount of time = the majority of

that time working in the space!).

Documentation – 10%

One to three images of your final project, along with a title, dimensions and material list, must be posted on the blogafter the final critique. Your final documentation should belabeled both with your name and also “Immersion”, so it canbe easily accessed.

Since your installation will have a very short life span, makesure it is documented really well! I suggest you ask for helpfrom a professional photographer or a photo student.
