Preface Welcome to our wonderful world of Professional Scuba diving. Entering this world is without a doubt is a life changing experience, and in itself represents an entire spectrum of emotions. It can be very exciting and exhilarating, and can also be incredibly peaceful. It can be soothing and rewarding and at times even stressful. It is addictive and highly contagious and will ultimately culminate in a lifestyle that few people achieve and most people only dream to attain. This internship that we nurtured and grew from scratch is our pride and joy! Since its inception our goal has been clear and plain; “To help create the best possible Career PADI Scuba Diving Instructors who will be asked for by name because of their exceptional work ethic and reputation in the industry. Blue Ocean Program interns will be the future dive industry leaders in South Africa and internationally.” Since then we proudly have interns who are actively working and growing in the diving industry in South Africa and various international countries. This program is only for the individuals who are serious about pursuing scuba diving as a career and want to invest in it as a lifestyle! As professionals in the scuba and leisure industry we have in our hands the power to dramatically influence other people’s lives. By the sharing of immense adventures, making lifelong friends, and going to exciting places, we offer a social escape from the dregs of daily life and its routines. We give reason for life and the means for memories. From what life gives us we make a living, but through passion for the industry, our aquatic world and what we contribute, we make this a lifestyle. We hope our lifestyle choice will be as fulfilling to you as it has been to us and adds value to you as a person, where ever it takes you. It will be our pleasure to show you how to become a professional in the scuba industry.

Why would you want to be a PADI Scuba Instructor?
The Love of Diving: “I am doing what I love and love what I do.” Opportunity to Teach: ”Its a great opportunity to not only meet a lot of fantastic people, but to see somebody start out at the very beginning and progress all the way to PADI Master Scuba Diver, Dive Master or even Instructor.” Lifestyle: ”Diving is arguably the best job in the world. How many other jobs can you walk into wearing a pair of shorts, t-shirts and flip-flops every day? I am guessing not many.” Self-Improvement: ”To teach is to learn. Diving provides the opportunity to learn math, biology, physics, history, physiology and communication skills. What other sport really allows you to learn while having so much fun. Diving helps keep you in shape. Try doing that with a nine to five job.” Enjoy Outdoor Activities: Diving allows you the opportunity to be outdoors, one with nature. The things you get to see underwater are amazing. I love the feeling of weightlessness, the ability to move freely. My office is the ocean. All desk bound workers out there eat your hearts out. You want to be me! Scuba Diving is a multi-faceted Industry with opportunities in

About the Blue Ocean Career Program
Location
Training takes place at Scubaversity, South Africa’s leading Five Star Career Development Centre, complete with purpose-built, heated, multi-level training pool with underwater cave, four fully equipped lecture rooms, a workshop, dive shop and compressor facility. Our Intern Village includes ten separate cottages as well as a social/braai area for Interns. Scubaversity was founded twenty two years ago by Colwin Setzkorn our Course Director. This facility has grown into the largest dive club in South Africa and the second in the world to hold a DAN HIRA certification.
Internship Program
As a dive centre we understand the need for qualified instructors who are well versed in the nuances of running a business as well as the necessary professional diver training required for leaders in the business. This program provides the Intern with a ‘hands on’ experience occupied at Scubaversity learning about the daily requirements to run one of the busiest dive centres in South Africa - while at the same time becoming a PADI Pro. By the end of their 12 month internship they will be able to produce a CV of someone who has been in the industry for two years or more. It is more than becoming a PADI professional; which is easily achieved by attending the courses – it is about being able to walk into any dive centre or resort around the world and immediately add significant value other than pure diver training. The experiences and lessons learnt at Scubaversity will also carry through in any field or profession the might find themselves in later.
Candidates are continuously evaluated on each segment and moved around to get all round experience. The interns are taught what it would be like to work in a “real working environment” so that there are no surprises once they are qualified and start to apply for work. The normal rules of working for a company apply. Interns will be assisted with writing their CV’s and will receive a reference letter from Scubaversity if they have met all the requirements and have performed well during the year. We do consider them for employment if they have been if they are adding value and would like to stay at Scubaversity. Our vision is to become the leading recruitment agency for instructors world-wide through providing top class, highly motivated, quality professionals. However the onus is on the intern to produce the required results and the more time invested in the program the more the Intern will benefit.

COSTS EXCLUDED Inland trip entrance fees Candidates will be camping at Miracle Waters or Bass Lake at least once a month and need to have camping equipment. The entrance fee to these venues cost about R300. These trips are not negotiable they have to attend it in order to log their dives as well as the learning experience of running the business.
Coastal Trips Scubaversity does a coastal trip once a month to various destinations. We did not include this in the program fee as it is not a necessity for the intern to be successful in the industry. It is however compulsory for his/her divemaster course. The suggestion is that they try and do at least two to four coastal trips a year these could cost between R2000-R3000 per trip.
Accommodation We have an intern village on our property. Each house is fully furnished and set-up for the intern to move in with only his/her bedding and cleaning equipment. It is highly recommend that the intern stays on the property for proper integration of the program and because of the hours.
COURSE SCHEDULE & HOURS The course is designed to instil discipline, avoiding the ‘beach bum’ impression of scuba diving. The candidates will be required to work shifts and attend lectures. Candidates need to prepare and commit themselves to a serious pace with a typical 12 hour day. This pressure is typical of the diving industry and no allowances will be made for poor attendance or complaints about long hours. We work 6 days a week with Mondays being the only day off.
CODE OF CONDUCT
All candidates will be required to sign a learning agreement. Smoking is frowned upon and only allowed in the intern village. Candidates need to apply themselves to the program at all times. Candidates need to be clean, shaven and dressed in staff clothing at all times. All matters at Scubaversity shall be treated as confidential. Candidates shall endeavour always to adhere to truthful statements and to good taste when called upon to express opinions of the diving industry. Scubaversity is a drug free environment. Any intern found to be taking/distributing drugs will immediately be suspended with no refund.
EVALUATION In order to ensure that the course is run at the highest standard, the staff will consistently evaluate the candidate’s performance on course and in the dive centre. If the candidate’s performance in the opinion of the staff is not up to standard, the candidate may be asked to leave the programme. The candidate will then be liable for the full cost of the programme.

November 2015 To Whom It May Concern: Re: Reference for Charl Wessels I trust this letter finds you well, as an introduction Scubaversity is a PADI 5 star Career Development Centre in Gauteng, one of the largest, top certifying dive centres in South Africa. As a dive centre owners for 21 years we understand the need for reliable employees that recognize the demands and business needs of a successful dive centre. Our Blue Ocean Program runs over 12 months and has been designed to develop and grow individuals in the dive industry that can add value to the business in all aspects and not just fulfil the role of an instructor. The program thus focuses on exposing and training the interns in as many as possible roles and functions of a dive centre, including business management, administrative duties, managing services and rentals, organising and logistics, marketing and recruitment skills and much more of the daily tasks any dive centre would encounter. Interns have to comply with the same requirements of a normal employee and have been exposed to the rigorous time demands of the dive industry working a 12 hour day, 6 days a week. Charl joined our Blue Ocean Internship Program in January 2015, he has successfully completed all aspects of the program including;
Running the front desk & managing customer queries and relationships by using EVE.
Achieving quota sales of equipment, courses and dive travel with distinction.
Successfully organised diver training and logistics of taking 50+ customer on a dive trip.
Managing servicing and equipment rental.
Planning and implementing a marketing campaign using various media including email, sms’s, social media and print.
Control and management of administrative functions including legal paperwork, certification, invoicing and accounts.
We, without hesitation highly recommend Charl to any company. He will add immense value being a self-motivated, remarkably stable individual with extraordinary leadership skills. Charl will walk into your business and be able to run it within 6 months. He has the ability to see and study a problem from a global point of view, often seeing mistakes and opportunities that most people would miss. He is very much able to work independently, and an exceptionally intelligent person who loves a challenge. You would definitely not make a mistake to consider Charl for a position in your company. We only wish him the best in his future endeavours and look forward to maybe one day welcoming him back at Scubaversity. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you need any further information. Kind regards Colwin Setzkorn PADI Course Director #602020 [email protected]
A Word from our Interns Alex Niederheitman I enrolled at Scubaversity in January 2016. I graduated as an Open Water Scuba Instructor in July that year and sadly left my internship in November, this was due to an extended internship program in Zanzibar. Being a 5 star Instructor Development Centre the course not only offered training from entry level open water right up to Master Scuba Diver Trainer and valuable work experience working a 12 hour day for 6 days a week but more importantly a few hidden life lessons. The training at Scubaversity is of tremendous quality and i would highly recommend them. With each course I felt stronger, safer and more comfortable as a diver. This is why i feel like I can do anything underwater today.
I feel both safe and confident to partake in any of the dives I am qualified in and to run any of the courses I am qualified to teach. And it’s because of the Scubaversity standard of training that I know I will show flames doing it!!
My work experience throughout the year was extraordinary. Moving monthly to different positions in the dive centre. This not only gave me experience in each position but an understanding as to how they work together in a successful dive centre. It was this experience that gave me confidence in myself and opened the door to the career of a lifetime.
I’ve done it all, from the late night compressor room grind to running the bar at a roaring Scubaversity social. And throughout all of it no matter how big I messed up or got it wrong I had a full arsenal of trained and experienced people as close as family around to support me and help fix the problem and learn from it. It’s because of this that I feel like I know what’s cutting in all of these environments and if asked I wouldn’t hesitate to perform any task in any of these aspects. This was a great chapter in my life and I will always remember my Internship at Scubaversity. I have become twice the man I ever thought I could be. Not only will I add value to all aspects of any business but I will show flames doing it. Scubaversity has given me a doorway to travel, new friends, a new view on life and I must say… there’s absolutely, positively, without a doubt nothing like it! The Blue Ocean Internship is one I would highly recommend. Thank you Mandy and Colwin. Justin Orchard I came to Scubaversity on 10th January 2015 knowing nothing about running a dive centre and becoming a Padi professional diver. Now 11 months later I leave knowing everything that is needed in order to accomplish this. This progress made would not have been possible without the help of you guys, by guiding me through thick and thin water, helping me and showing me the 'real' world. Now that I take on this new challenge and show the world what you taught me to become, the best in the industry, I can never thank you enough. Thanks again for everything, the trips, parties, shows, talks etc
Bernard De Beer When I arrived at Scubaversity there was a field of excitement that filled me in the year in front of me. This program gave me the opportunity to seek the adventure and passion for a sport that has the world as a possible office and any beach as a desk to carry on teaching and learning about the passion of scuba diving. Throughout the year there was a lot of learning going on not just in the field of scuba but also you learn a lot more about yourself and where you can and want to stand in this world. The environment in which this is all conduct is a free place to learn and make the small mistakes and the management staff are always willing to help and grow your education more. This program has given me a chance to end my internship of on a paradise island Zanzibar in a dive centre that launches every day and has endless amount of learning may it be DSDs in the pool of an open water course in the ocean. I have learned a lot on the way diving works on the business side and all the way to diving every day side of diving. I have made friends for a life time and a passion that will never die.
The First Ever Intern Branden Hallick I would like to take this moment to say thanks to EVERYONE involved with my training and development - let me take a second to explain my involvement, At 18 I left Cape Town in search of a "life" and I headed for Johannesburg (can you believe that?) with no idea of where i was going what I was going to do, nothing? I was like 80% of all teenagers out there "LOST" I never heard anything or grabbed sight of diving at all and it all started with that 1 DSD. I will never forget that day, I was upside down and all around weightlessness I was hooked! As I surfaced There was "the man" Colwin Setzkorn, he looked down at me and saw that glimmer all divers get for their first time underwater and asked me what I was doing with my life, where I was going bla bla long story short, he offered me a job, and for 2 years I dedicated everything I had to Scubaversity, why? BECAUSE IT WAS THE BEST PLACE FOR SOMEONE TO GROW AS A HUMAN BEING! I learnt things there with that I made many, many mistakes but that taught me the valuable lessons that the big wide world has out there it prepared me for what I needed that no university out there can give you - It gave me independence, problem solving, logistical planning, how to understand people from all walks of life, responsibility as well as an Education in the Dive Industry which I so craved. During their education and Internship I assisted in planning trips, packing tailors, counting and servicing equipment and guiding dives for weekends and holidays of groups of more than 60 people (big responsibility at 18 years old). All under the watch of Mandy and Colwin. As the time went on I grew as me, Branden Hallick and became the Branden I wanted to be I created my "Own Brand". Because of Scubaversity and everyone involved in it I sit here now typing this message on the Island in Indonesia Bali with the sun at 33 degrees Celsius, working for one of the biggest companies in the dive industry worldwide at the peak of high season. After spending some time in Mozambique, 2 Years in Thailand on a VERY REMOTE Island "Koh Lipe" having visited places like Malaysia, Australia and Singapore in my little off time i had (welcome to the industry). Completed more than 2000 dives and over 150 certifications, I assisted as one of the 3 first ever people to help clean the beaches around Thailand "trashhero.org" and Myself started that project in Indonesia. The best part, why i keep doing it - is for the people i meet and the REAL friends you make worldwide and it all started at the world’s best Dive Club Family of more than 4000 people SCUBAVERSITY!! In closing I would like to say that I am for sure living my dream!! I'm 25 years old and almost completed my mission through South East Asia (4 years). The next step for me is to head north for Europe the Americas and back home to buy a boat and do it again in opposite direction. The one life you live, I ask anyone reading this, "if you could live your life again, what would you differently?" well for me I would for sure have started my educational internship at Scubaversity and begun diving earlier than I did.
A Word from our Go Pro’s
Charles Cammell PADI No 395405 If in May 2012, having just completed my Open Water course, you had told me that some 3 and a half years later I would be a qualified OWSI and speciality instructor I would have told you, you were mad. Well it happened and I made it. From zero to hero, not as an intern but a normal diver. Scubaversity made the journey amazing and when I think back on the experience, I would never change it. Under the guidance and tutelage of Colwin and his talented team I have received the best possible qualification and training. It's up to me to use the tools, tips and guidance I have gained through the journey. The SV team take the really safe PADI standards and provide a grounding to the candidates which prepares them as well and better than candidates worldwide. Our German examiner commented at the IE that the quality of the 16 SV candidates was superb. If you're looking for change, a personal development challenge, an opportunity for self-development or simply want to be a better diver I suggest you take the plunge with the SV team. I did and it gave me tools to be an excellent instructor and a better businessman and leader than I was when I started.
Mark Murgatroyd My Testimonial to You Colwin And SV as a whole! So it all started 10 years ago when one of my friends came back from Thailand and told me that he had been scuba diving there and we have to try it out. So we got a group of friends together and went for an introductory meeting/lecture to see what it is all about, when we got there we were welcomed in with wide arms, happy voices and massive smiles... Luckily we went to Scubaversity cause I don’t think my story would be the same if it was anywhere else. So they made diving sound like it was a massive party so we all decided to do it. Not knowing that at that moment my decision would change my life forever! It has taken me 10 years through lots of experience and great times (sometimes tough times) but I have just completed my Open water instructor course. It was honestly one of the best feelings of accomplishment finally getting to a place where I am happy to be and a career path I want to do and am soo passionate about, and this would never been possible without the help of The Amazing bunch of Scubaversity Instructors that I have had along the way and especially Colwin and Mandy always helping and making sure we push ourselves because they want to see others succeed which is very rare, most people only want what is best for themselves, but thats never been the case here. The IDC course is tough I’m not going to lie and is alot of work with extreme pressure on you to get everything done and to get it done perfectly! I know between the candidates we used to swear at the instructors behind the backs because we had late nights of lectures and still have to go home and prepare for the next evening! Even though we weren’t sure we liked them there, once we got to the IE(Instructor Exam) we flew through it... We were so well prepared it actually felt like we missed something and was another day of easy work! I know afterwards I felt relieved that I was so over prepared that it was easy, because it is a stressful day and anything can go wrong. So 2 weeks after I got my Instructors I am setting sail to Australia for a life changing journey and to go teach there which is a dream! Especially after working in an office for 6 years I am so over it, its not for me. I want to spead the passion I have for diving with others and the passion SV has given me for diving! I want to thank again the Instructors of SV and most of all Colwin & Mandy for changing my life! Its like my life has just started from scratch, a new slate this is the life I want. I can never thank you enough, and truely appreciate everything you have done for me! I will take the teachings and Scubaversity way and travel around the world inforcing it when I teach my students! Whoever reads this I recommend, without a doubt you join Scubaversity IMMEDIATELY and your life will change and only for the better!! Best place for Diving and a good time!
