We live in a fallen world so were always trying to adapt accordingly while holding onto our hope in Gods promises through Christ. I think we often think of faith as an intellectual thing rather than an incarnational thing. That is to say, we think of our Christian lives as something thought about rather than something lived out in the flesh. So I want to briefly reflect on two things that are in that arena of thought. First: lets talk about what life—for the remainder of this summer and into the fall— will look like as a gathering of Christians. There are many unknowns at the moment. See the newsletter and weekly updates for what activities and events are and are not going to be happening in the days/weeks/ months ahead. I can tell you that regardless of what happens in the world, Christ will continue to be proclaimed and His gifts will remain available for forgiveness and life somehow or another. Of that, you can be assured. Services are back to normal times now. Well still have you contact Lisa ahead of time (or say, Keep me on for X time.”) so we can keep being spatially distanced. Weve been having more than enough room between all services so never hesitate to contact. And of course, Pastor Troup and I are always happy to bring Gods Word and Sacrament to you as well. This is our Christian food for life. Second: lets talk for a moment about what you and I, as Christians, look like in this fallen world. If I asked, What does a Christian look like compared to a non- Christian? How would you answer? I fear that too many would say, No difference...we just believe in Jesus. The thing is, there ought to be a big difference. Our conversations, actions, habits, thoughts, sources of rest, uses of time should all be saturated and shaped by Jesus. We dont have Christian freedom to live like the rest of the world. We have Christian freedom from the world to live according to the Word (Col 2:8, 3:2, Gal 5:16-26, Rom 12:2, 1 Jn 2)! We dont live as Americans who are Christians. We live as Christians who live in America. We dont live as individuals who go to church. We live as Christs body that goes out into the world. So when the world is panicking, were sharing the comfort we have in Jesus. When the world is knocking on wood, were praying to our Heavenly Father. When the world is finding rest by consuming vulgar entertainment, were finding rest through the hearing of Gods Word. When people are stressing over the things going on in this world, were taking our cares to the Lord in humble trust that He hears our prayers (Matt. 6:26ff, 11:28ff). Our confession of who Jesus is and what Hes done for us permeates every part of who we are. And just as our bodies get sick and need physical medicine, we need spiritual medicine too. We constantly need the medicine of Christ to restore us to health. Our lives consist of receiving life from Jesus, living as His people, and repenting when we fail to do so. We receive grace upon grace into eternal life holding onto the life He gives us. Who knows what craziness the world has in store for us. What we do know is that Gods gifts continue to strengthen and sustain us through it all. Jesus is the light of the world and He sends us out as lights into this world of darkness. Nothing has changed! If you have any questions, just let me know. The Lord be with you!

From Our Administrative Pastor…

Dear Saints,

What to talk about...what to talk about… Hmmmm. Murder hornets? Meh, that’s so two weeks ago. Sahara Sand Storm? Nah, that’s not even going to affect us too much. COVID? Ugh. Been there...done that… Life in this fallen world? Yeah. There we go.

We live in a fallen world so we’re always trying to adapt accordingly while holding onto our hope in God’s promises through Christ. I think we often think of faith as an intellectual thing rather than an incarnational thing. That is to say, we think of our Christian lives as something thought about rather than something lived out in the flesh. So I want to briefly reflect on two things that are in that arena of thought.

First: let’s talk about what life—for the remainder of this summer and into the fall—will look like as a gathering of Christians. We’ll still have you contact Lisa ahead of time (or say, “Keep me on for X time.”) so we can keep being spatially distanced. We’ve been having more than enough room between all services so never hesitate to contact. And of course, Pastor Troup and I are always happy to bring God’s Word and Sacrament to you as well. This is our Christian food for life.

Second: let’s talk for a moment about what you and I, as Christians, look like in this fallen world. If I asked, “What does a Christian look like compared to a non-Christian?” How would you answer? I fear that too many would say, “No difference...we just believe in Jesus.” The thing is, there

ought to be a big difference. Our conversations, actions, habits, thoughts, sources of rest, uses of time should all be saturated and shaped by Jesus. We don’t have Christian freedom to live like the rest of the world. We have Christian freedom from the world to live according to the Word (Col 2:8, 3:2, Gal 5:16-26, Rom 12:2, 1 Jn 2)! We don’t live as Americans who are Christians. We live as Christians who live in America. We don’t live as individuals who go to church. We live as Christ’s body that goes out into the world. So when the world is panicking, we’re sharing the comfort we have in Jesus. When the world is knocking on wood, we’re praying to our Heavenly Father. When the world is finding rest by consuming vulgar entertainment, we’re finding rest through the hearing of God’s Word. When people are stressing over the things going on in this world, we’re taking our cares to the Lord in humble trust that He hears our prayers (Matt. 6:26ff, 11:28ff). Our confession of who Jesus is and what He’s done for us permeates every part of who we are.

What we do know is that God’s gifts continue to strengthen and sustain us through it all. Jesus is the light of the world and He sends us out as lights into this world of darkness.

Nothing has changed!

If you have any questions, just let me know.

Romans 10:11. For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.”

Dear Brothers and Sisters of Immanuel, I recently read a book by Rev. Harold Senkbeil, a Lutheran pastor, in which he distinguished guilt from shame. Normally, we think of those two things as being the same. They’re the feelings you have when you do something wrong. And, according to our society, both feelings are harmful to your mental and spiritual well-being. They’re worthless feelings. They don’t achieve anything good or productive. Rev. Senkbeil begs to differ. He tells us in his book, Cure of Souls: Cultivating a Pastor’s Heart, that guilt is what we have and feel because of our sinful behavior. It has to do with what we do. Shame, on the other hand, is the feeling that you’re worthless. Base. Dirty and vile. You feel like it’s impossible for anyone to love you. The distinction is helpful. The Bible tells us that we’re all guilty. We’re all guilty of committing sin—with our thoughts, words and deeds. We’d be lying and deceiving ourselves if we didn’t acknowledge our guilt. More than that, guilt makes us understand the seriousness of our sin. Sin offends God and hurts others! Without guilt, we become hardened to our wrongs and insensitive to God and the people in our lives. Without it, we put distance between God and us, other people and us. Guilt opens our eyes to our need for Jesus and his forgiveness. It drives us to Jesus’ cross and empty tomb! And it’s Jesus who takes our guilt away and prevents shame from invading and dominating our lives. God doesn’t want us to experience shame. That’s why Jesus came into the world. Jesus wants us to know we’re valuable to him—so valuable, he gladly went to the cross for us. God doesn’t want to believe and feel that we’re base, disgusting, dirty and unloved. Jesus’ cross and empty tomb are powerful testimonies to the truth that we’ve been cleansed of all sin and made holy in God’s sight by Jesus’ work. They’re testimonies to God’s love. A love that surpasses all human understanding. In the words of Rom. 10:11, the above Bible verse: “Everyone who believes in (relies on) Jesus will not be put to shame.” This is fantastic news! And because we sinful human beings are so prone to shame, God gives us tools so he can daily take away our shame. The tool of God’s Word, the Bible. Hear and read it and send shame packing. The tool of the Lord’s Supper. How can you feel shame when you receive Christ’s body and blood as an assurance of God’s love and forgiveness? You may feel great love and gratitude, but shame flies away! The tool of Holy Baptism. You’re not dirty and worthless. God cleansed you in the waters of Holy Baptism and made you his child. You’re the

child of the Lord of universe! And so, brothers and sisters, do we have guilt? Yes, we’re sinners. We need to own up to it. But do we have shame? No way! We’re redeemed by Christ, cleansed and clean in God’s sight. We’re precious pearls to our Redeemer and valued by him beyond words. You and I belong to Christ—and because of him, we “will never be put to shame.” God bless you richly! Love in Christ,

From Our Associate Pastor…

THANK YOU FROM ELDEN & TARYN NIEMEYER

We want to say a big THANK YOU to our

Immanuel family for honoring us for our time leading the Immanubells handbell choir. We feel blessed to be a part of helping our youth praise God with their musical talents at our

services. We have truly enjoyed being a part of the music ministry here at Immanuel

sharing the talents God has given us. An extra special thanks to Ann Frank our Music

Director who does a lot of work in the background helping us coordinate schedules, select music and assist with practices. “Come,

let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us

come before him with thanksgiving and extol Him with music and song.” Psalm 95: 1-2.

Thank you for the special day and wonderful surprise. We were very moved by the cards, notes and gifts received from our prior and

current bell ringers.

Preschool News – July/August 2020 Immanuel Lutheran Preschool has been approved to open this fall by DCFS. This comes with many restrictions that we will be able to handle by the grace of God. Some of these restrictions include a maximum of 15 students with no more than 11 students in a day. Eleven is the magic number for social distancing in the classroom during circle time and several activities. Students will need to wear masks or buffs when we cannot socially distance from one another. We will do our best to make this a fun and non-threatening activity. Currently, we have a full roster with several students on the waiting list. God provides. Because of the low enrollment requirements, we would have struggled making payroll. Thanks to God and to an anonymous donor, we will be fine. In times like this we know that God is with us. We have been blessed. Just before the school was shut down in March, we purchased our materials for the playground pavilion. The small pavilion should be done in the month of July. This should be a nice area for picnics and playtime with your families. I am thankful for my wonderful church family at Immanuel. Peace to all. – Linda Polansky

Virtual Presentation from the Funkes! The Funkes were going to visit Immanuel in May, but due the circumstances that has been postponed. Here’s a note from them regarding their presentation: After many hours of prep, we are thrilled to say that our video presentation is now online :-) You can find it at www.youtube.com/EricFunkeGLO. This presentation is what we would have shared with you all if we had been able to visit in person. It includes three sections: 1) A twelve-minute video recap of the past seven years of ministry 2) A slide show with more details about the past year and a half since we last visited the U.S. 3) A song with pictures

A Note from Our Music Director… “Stay tuned...”

...these words remind me of radio programs from my childhood! I enjoyed listening to several radio programs with my aunt and when they were over for the day's broadcast, the announcer would say “stay tuned” to find out what happens next by tuning in tomorrow! The July/August edition of our church's newsletter has always found me outlining what the fall music schedule would look like including start-up practices for all of the music groups. However, this year, I am encouraging all those involved in Immanuel's Music Ministry to “stay tuned” as weeks/months go by to find out what happens next. How and when practices will begin for the next music season will depend upon keeping those involved safe and healthy. As time goes by, please watch for music announcements/notes in the weekly updates, etc. And, please continue to pray for Immanuel's Music Ministry! I close this short article with the words from K. Lee Scott's “And Christ Shall Be Our Peace” based on Micah 5:2-5 and Psalm 80:1-7, 16-18:

“And Christ shall be our peace,” the prophet said of old, “His coming is from ancient days, the Shepherd to His fold. From Judah's tribe in Bethlehem shall come this King so long-foretold.” And Christ shall be our strength; His own shall dwell secure; His kingdom spread through all the earth forever to endure. For His dear flock He conquered death, o'er sin and grave to be the cure. And Christ shall be our hope through all our weary days, His rod and staff our feet direct to guide us in His ways. Through slow our steps and dark our paths, He shall our troubled hearts up-raise. And Christ shall be our joy; help us this joy to share with this, our lost and dying wor ld. Help us Your grace declare, that all may know Your mighty pow'r and tender love beyond compare.

Serving Him...who gives us peace, strength, hope and joy!

During the 10:15 am service on this Sunday, the Preschool—8th grade students will sing 2 VBS songs to celebrate. We’ll be practicing those songs during our Sunday School classes over the summer. Be on the lookout for a special letter from your teacher coming in early August telling you more about this special day and inviting you to attend! Since we canceled our Outdoor Service in June, we may plan to have this on Rally Day! Be sure to watch the weekly announcements & emails for more info!
