ST. GREGORY THE GREAT POPE & DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH

Patron of Epilepsy, Musicians & Teachers MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 3

Pope Saint Gregory I, also known as the Great, was the Pope of the Catholic Church between 590 and 604 AD. Born around 540, Gregory was well educated and an expert in law. He became the Prefect of Rome at age 33, just as his father had been. After five years in office he resigned, founded six monasteries on his Sicilian estate, and became a Benedictine monk in his own home at Rome.

Pope Pelagius II, who reigned from 579 to 590, chose Gregory to serve as an ambassador to the imperial court in Constantinople. In 590, Pope Pelagius II died, and Gregory was proclaimed pope by acclamation. This was not something Gregory wanted, but he accepted the burden nevertheless. Gregory preferred the monastic life in a series of writings praising it. He also referred to himself as a servant of God.

Pope Gregory was direct and firm. He removed unworthy priests from office, forbade taking money for many services, emptied the papal treasury to ransom prisoners of the Lombards, and to care for persecuted Jews and the victims of plague and famine. He was very concerned about the conversion of England, sending 40 monks from his own monastery. He is known for his reform of the liturgy, and for strengthening respect for doctrine. Pope Gregory made many changes to the Mass, some of which remain today - the position of the Our Father in the Mass remains where Pope Gregory placed it. Pope Gregory died on March 13, 604.

His book, Pastoral Care, on the duties and qualities of a bishop, was read for centuries after his death. He described bishops mainly as physicians whose main duties were preaching and the enforcement of discipline. In his own down-to-earth preaching, Gregory was skilled at applying the daily Gospel to the needs of his listeners. Called “the Great,” Gregory has been given a place with Augustine, Ambrose, and Jerome, as one of the four key doctors of the Western Church. An Anglican historian has written: “It is impossible to conceive what would have been the confusion, the lawlessness, the chaotic state of the Middle Ages without the medieval papacy; and of the medieval papacy, the real father is Gregory the Great.”

ST. TERESA OF CALCUTTA Patron of World Youth Day &

Missionaries of Charity WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5

Mother Teresa of Calcutta was born on August 26, 1910 to Albanian parents in what is now Skopje, Macedonia. Gonxha (Agnes) Bojaxhiu was the youngest of the three children who survived.

At 18, she entered the Loreto Sisters of Dublin. In 1928, she said goodbye to her mother and made her way to a new land and a new life. The following year she was sent to the Loreto novitiate in Darjeeling, India. She chose the name Teresa and prepared for a life of service. She was assigned to a high school for girls in Calcutta, where she taught history and geography to the daughters of the wealthy. But she could not escape the realities around her—the poverty, the suffering, the overwhelming numbers of destitute people. In 1946, while riding a train to Darjeeling to make a retreat, Sister Teresa heard what she later explained as “a call within a call. The message was clear. I was to leave the convent and help the poor while living among them.” She also heard a call to give up her life with the Sisters of Loreto and instead, to “follow Christ into the slums to serve him among the poorest of the poor.”

After receiving permission to leave Loreto and establish a new religious community, Sister Teresa took a nursing course for several months. She returned to Calcutta, where she lived in the slums and opened a school for poor children. Dressed in a white sari and sandals - the ordinary dress of an Indian woman - she soon began work with the poor and sick. Volunteers who came to join her in the work, some of them former students, became the core of the Missionaries of Charity. Others helped by donating food, clothing, supplies, and the use of buildings. In 1952, the city of Calcutta gave Mother Teresa a former hostel, which became a home for the dying and the destitute. As the order expanded, services were also offered to orphans, abandoned children, alcoholics, the aging, and street people.

For the next 40 years, Mother Teresa worked tirelessly for the poor. 1979, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. On Sept. 5, 1997, God called her home. She was canonized by Pope Francis on Sept. 4, 2016.

“If you judge people, you have no time to love them.”

    St. Teresa of Calcutta

"From within people, from their hearts, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder,

adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly. All these evils come from within and they defile."

Central to this Gospel is the question, where does the heart lie? Jesus teaches that observance of the Law and tradition is not an end in itself but an indication of where the heart lies. External actions reveal the internal desire to remain faithful to our covenantal relationship with God. Jesus calls us to the true purpose of the Law: a heart centered on God!

On this Labor Day weekend let us pray for all workers, for the contributions and sacrifices each individual makes, not only for their own families, but for the prosperity and well-being of our country:

“Lord, on this Labor Day, we thank You for the blessing of work. We ask for strength to complete each day. We ask for rest when we are weary.

We ask for Your guidance for everyone seeking employment, and we ask that You be with those whose faces we might never see

but who work tirelessly each day for the good of us all. Amen”

Let us also remember in our prayers our beloved Pastor, Fr. Floyd Rotunno, as well as his brother, Fr. Philip Rotunno, on the second Anniversary of Fr. Floyd’s death on September 3rd.

Please mark your calendar and join me for the next “Tuesday morning Study Group” in the Parish Center, beginning on Tuesday, September 11th, 8:30-10am, on the History of the Catholic Church. This presentation explores what it means to be One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic. More details are within this Bulletin. Also, coming up on Wednesday evenings in October, will be Rosary Devotions for Life, with a special guest speaker from the Sisters of Life – more details to follow.

Over the next few months you will see periodic inserts on online Parish Giving. Our collections are so vital for the stability and the future of this Parish so please make use of this service for your convenience on a regular basis or when you are not able to be with us. You can find the link “Parish Giving” on the top right-hand corner of our Parish website – www.ihmcmahwah.org .

May God watch over all students as they go off to school this week. May He watch over them as they open their minds and hearts to learning, and socializing, in our society today; and may He guide all our high school and college students as they confront new opportunities, challenges and decisions in and their life. Let us keep them, and their families, in our daily prayers!

    God Bless You. Fr. Jacek
