Immaculate Conception Church Parish Mission Statement
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church celebrates the Eucharist and proclaims the gospel—in worship, through our love of God and for each other, and with our ministry to the marginalized. We journey together in our faith, united by our trust in Christ’s love and mercy and the powerful intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

• Novena to the Holy Spirit will begin on Ascension Day, May 30th: the theme for this year is the renewal of faith in God in our faith community.
• We found an 1893 rusty chalice while cleaning the former rectory on Buffalo street. We intend to restore the chalice for use in memory of our former parochial school.
• If your loved one or anyone you know is hospitalized and would like a pastoral visit, do not hesitate to contact the parish office at any time.
• There are many Pro-Life actions which are taking place at the current time. There are too many to list, but be sure to check out the web-site: https:/www.nyscatholic.org/nys-catholic-conference-action-center/ for all the information cov-ering Pregnancy centers, Assisted Suicide, and the Equality Act.
FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
What is glory according to Jesus? According to this week’s gos-pel, the glorification of Jesus is his death on the cross. It sounds like we would have organized things a little differently. Jesus would have come down and crushed his enemies. This, however, is not God’s way. God wins when he appears to lose. He is not glorified when he humiliates his foes, but rather when he chang-es their hearts, when he turns tears into smiles, when he re-stores hope to those who have messed up their lives. This is why the cross is the greatest hour, when he showed us his mighty love. This is what we are challenged to embrace. Are we ready?
DEVOTIONS NURTURE FAITH
One of the blessings of being Catholic is the op-
portunity to celebrate feast days and devotions
of our Faith. Recognition of different celebrations
is part of our rich history and culture. We are
compiling a list of feast days that we, as a parish,
recognize as important dates. Whether the dates
are holy days of obligation or not, we encourage
you to celebrate such days through the celebra-
tion of the Eucharist and through prayer. Are
there particular saints and feast days that you
hold dear as part of your family tradition?
We would like to hear from you about your spe-
cial “Friends and Intercessors in Heaven” and
would love for you to share with us the devotions
you and your family carry out.

Finance Council Update Our last financial update to the parish was in February 2019, when we commented on the December 31, 2018 financials. Father Chumo asks that we summarize, for the parish, our financial information at least quarterly. Activities in April for Holy Week and Easter delayed our March 31, 2019 reporting a bit, but now we have time to report not only on the parish, but also on the final school sale transaction. Below is a summary of parish income and expense for the 9-month period ending March 31, 2019 and a summary of school sale proceeds. The notes and comments that follow are also important to under-standing these numbers. Parish Income and Expense: School Sale Proceeds (0n 5/7/19) Income: Sales Price : $2,850,000 Collections $338,600 Agent Fee 85,500 Rental Income 50,100 Legal Fee 18,500 Donations/Bequests 21,300 Transfer Fee. 17,100 Parish Programs 12,300 Closing Items. 20,253 Other Sources 10,000 Operating Income: $432,300 Net Proceeds: $2,708,647 Expenses: Payroll and Benefits. $ 261,100 Insurance 45,000 Utilities 33,800 Courier Journal/Books 22,200 Maintenance/Repairs 21,800 Snow/Trash Removal 24,200 Postage/Copy/Supplies 11,100 Food 10,600 Property Taxes 8,200 Other Expenses 39,000 Operating Expenses: $ 477,000
Operating Income (Loss): $ (44,700))
Notes and Comments (Parish) As Father Chumo mentioned last week, the weekend collections are the backbone of support for parish activities. For the 9-month period ending March 31, 2019 our collections are $51,600 under budget and $ 36,700 less than the same period last year. The drop was most notable since January 1, 2019. Our Easter collection (April 21) of $11,400 is not yet included in the numbers shown. Attend-ance at mass has been decreasing over the last 3 years. Operating Expenses are within budget, with significant saving in gas and electric utility expense. Also, included in the operating expenses are over $40,000 of ongoing school expenses (insurance, snow plowing, utilities) that will no longer be paid by the parish. During this period the parish received a large single gift of $150,000 which, in compli-ance with diocesan accounting rules, is not included in Operating Income. Such large gifts cannot realistically be predicted, or budgeted, and are set aside with other funds to be used for upcoming major projects. Our Operating Loss for the last 9 months is not good news, but by the end of June we hope to see a more balanced result. Notes and Comments (School): The school sale transaction was finalized on May 7, 2019. The net proceeds, again as required by di-ocesan accounting rules, are not current income. They are treated as Stable Patrimony and will be deposited in our long-term investment account. Many parishioners, families and supporters invested heavily in our school over many past years, and it is fitting to invest these sale proceeds to safeguard the financial future of our parish. To clarify 2 things mentioned by Father Chumo last weekend: (1) our parish will have access to interest and dividends earned by this investment when needed; and (2) the purchase offer we accepted from Ithaca Neighborhood Housing exceeded all three independent appraisals provided by appraisers we hired. The local team of Steve Lipinski and Dave Moore, of Steven Lipinski and Associates, did an outstanding job in marketing and selling this property. Our Parish Property Task Force, appointed by Father Chumo in 2017 , ( Curt Ashman, Edd Farmer, Pete Romani, Mary Edsall Golway, Lynn Conway and Matt Conway) worked tirelessly with the diocese and local resources since May 2017 to develop, manage and oversee the process that ended with the successful sale closing on May 7. Finally, many thanks to the volunteers, staff and others who helped clean the school, arrange for the re-use of classroom furniture and material, and move Father Chu-mo from his old rectory on Buffalo St. to his new apartment in the Parish Center. In closing, a big ‘asante sana’ to Father Chumo for his leadership and support ! In a few weeks we will provide updated financial information for our Cemetery as well as presenta-tion of alternative giving options and ideas for Legacy Planning / Support. Thank You for your ongoing support, in all ways, of our parish. Curt Ashman Chair, Finance Council
