    Gemilas Chesed SynagogueIMIoKeesport,

    October 30, 1860 Cheshven 9, 5721

  • To those of us who have attended no other synagogue since ourchildhood days, the passing of our beloved Gemilas Chesed Synagoguefills us with an incalculable sadness as it marks the end of an era.

It is a certainty that no matter whatever the future might bring orthe magnificence of any future House of Worship which will serve ourreligious needs, no place will ever replace our original hallowed GemilasChesed synagogue.

It will forever be enshrined in our hearts as the haven where we firstentered as bright-eyed eager youngsters, learning more and more with everyvisit about the greatness and simplicity of our blessed religion.

It was the sacred goal where we first entered manhood when webecame Bar Mitzvah, and added the many responsibilities which come withthe arrival of age.

It brings back a flock of unforgettable memories to every individual, whether it be the joys of a Simchath Torah celebration or the solemnity ofa Yom Kippur. To many of us, the Gemilas Chesed synagogue markedthe occasion of a "Bewarfung", the day before a marriage and to others,it may mean, the peace of mind brought on by the praying of "Tehillim"for a loved one in danger of dying,

To all of us, the lovely Synagogue must bring back many memoriesof time spent there in meditation and prayer, a blessed spot where wemight reflect and gain courage to face the seemingly unsurmountableproblems which confront us.

In that hallowed atmosphere, most of us find at least a partial solutionto perplexing difficulties, strengthening us with the will to go on and copewith our sorrows, anxieties and fears. It is a sure fact that no one emergedfrom the Gemilas Chesed synagogue on such occasions without the moralstamina to carry on.

However, the die is cast and we must move on to whatever the futuremight have for us. The Gemilas Chesed synagogue might be demolished, thewreckers might crush its walls, but the memory of it will never die for any ofus, who might have lived with it since its erection in 1904, or even for thosewho have been unfortunate enough to have known it for only a small spanof years.

It has enriched all of our lives, and its memory should forever serveus as a beacon to cherish and treasure the rest of our days.
