Columbus Day or Indigenous People’s Day?! Columbus Day is celebrated on the second Monday of every October. The name of the
holiday varies depending on location. The holiday goes by Día de la Raza ("Day of the
Race") in many countries in Latin America, as Discovery Day in the Bahamas, as Día
del Respeto a la Diversidad Cultural (Day of Respect for Cultural Diversity)
in Argentina, and Día de las Américas (Day of the Americas) in Belize and Uruguay.
Columbus Day has been a federal holiday in the U.S. since 1937 but has been celebrat-
ed long before it was nationally recognized as a federal holiday. The United States is
feeling the pressure to change the name of the National holiday from Columbus Day to
Indigenous People’s Day due to the questioning of what Columbus did when he found
the new world. Seattle, Washington’s Board of Education has voted unanimously to
change the name of the holiday in public schools from Columbus Day to Indigenous
People’s Day to show that Seattle “recognizes the fact that Seattle is built upon the
homelands and villages of the Indigenous Peoples of this region, without whom the
building of the City would not have been possible,” as local Fox affiliate KCPQ notes.
Berkeley, California started celebrating Indigenous People’s Day in 1992 as well as
several other cities in California. At least four states do not celebrate Columbus Day
(Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon, and South Dakota) with South Dakota officially celebrating
Native American Day instead. Columbus, Ohio has not sponsored an official Colum-
bus Day parade since the 1990s, in part over controversy over the legacy of Columbus.
In April 2014, the city council of Minneapolis, Minnesota, officially voted to recognize
Indigenous Peoples' Day instead of Columbus Day. As awareness of what Columbus
actually stood for increases, it becomes more and more obvious that the holiday needs
to be nationally renamed.

Electrolytes: Understanding
Replacement Options
Electrolytes such as sodium,
potassium, and chloride play an
important role in exercise. When
you sweat, you lose electrolytes
through water. Therefore it is
important to maintain a balance
that is right for your body and
level of exercise. Deficiency
symptoms include cramping,
nausea, or muscle weakness. If
you sweat salty, check out this
article for guidance.
