Jean Beaman gave a presentation on race, ethnicity,

and racism for the Purdue CAPS Diversity Team on

March 22, 2017.

Erin Straka came in 2nd at the Undergraduate Research

Poster Symposium 2017. “You can't always get what

you want: Gender attitudes and Parental Leave”. Her

mentor is Jeremy Reynolds.

Bert Useem was the Keynote speaker at the Under-

graduate Research Symposium, Clark Atlanta Universi-

ty, March 29, 2017.

Charlie Shook, a member of the West Lafayette Human

Relations Commission, spoke to Jean Beaman’s SOC

310 class about discrimination, diversity, and human

rights in the Greater Lafayette area.

Fenggang Yang was a panelist at the symposium: “In

Response to Persecution: What Is To be done?“ at the

National Press Club, Washington, D.C. on April 20,

2017.

Research Award from the College of Human Sciences at

Iowa State.

Joy Kadowaki received the Bilsland Dessertation Fellow-

ship for 2017-2018.

Fenggang Yang was selected as a winner of the 2017

College of Liberal Arts Discovery Excellence Award for the

Social Sciences.

Andrew Raridon received the Teaching Academy Gradu-

ate Teaching Award on April 25, 2017.

Blakelee Kemp was awarded a 2017-18 PRF Research

Grant for “The Early Social Origins of Premature Aging?”

Jarod Wright was awarded a 2017-18 PRF Research

Grant for “Digital Contention: Perception, Framing, and

Identity Process in Movements for Online Rights and Free-

dom.”

Eden Holmes was awarded the Sociology/CLA Alumni

Outstanding Senior Award and her name was added to

the plaque in the hall display case.

Jarod Wright was awarded the Purdue Department of

Sociology Summer Research Training Support Award.

Nicole Remley was awarded The Bravo Award at the

Sociology Awards Reception on April 24, 2017.
