Su-Lin’s mother, Molly, considers herself a collector. To her, everything has a story, and a place in her home. When Su-Lin’s American boyfriend asks to visit, this sets mother and daughter on a collision course.

Why does Molly feel the need to surround herself with all of her belongings? What does Su-Lin learn when she digs through things that she’s usually forbidden to touch? And can the relationship between Molly and Su-Lin survive coming face-to-face with their deepest, darkest secrets?

Humorous and heart-breaking, Mine – like the family at its heart – looks in dark, forgotten places to find moments of light and love.

Mine is a work-in-progress based on The Weight of Emptiness, which was

staged as part of Playground Entertainment’s State of Mind (a production

showcase of four plays) that ran from 26 to 29 October 2016 at The Arts House

at The Old Parliament.

MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDING ARTISTIC DIRECTORThere was a palpable sense of despair in our community when the pandemic brought the theatre industry to a standstill earlier this year. Several young artists I knew told me that they were contemplating giving up working in the theatre, because they couldn’t see a way forward.

We decided then to fast-track our Directing Residency programme, which had originally been scheduled for 2021. We wanted to give young people hope and opportunities at a time when both seemed to be in short supply.

Over the past few months, it has been my great privilege and pleasure to work with these young theatre-makers – from developing their vision, casting and working with actors, designers and technical teams, to learning how to budget and market a show with the Wild Rice team. When social distancing restrictions forced us to move their productions out of our intimate black-box studio and into The Ngee Ann Kongsi Theatre, they rose to the challenge of directing for our thrust stage.

Today, you will be watching Mine, directed by Thong Pei Qin. Birthing a new play is possibly one of the biggest challenges a director can face. But Pei Qin bravely led her team in developing and re-imagining this original script with her playwright, Tan Suet Lee, and her indefatigable cast of Karen Tan and Chanel Ariel Chan.

We set out to inspire these young directors – but they, too, have inspired us, giving everyone at Wild Rice a sense of purpose. They have helped us make sense of our mission to nurture future generations of artists.

The show you are about to see is a work in development. Pei Qin and all in her company will be listening and learning from this live theatrical encounter with you. Your laughter, sighs and silences will teach us what we’re doing right and show us how we can improve. By being here today, you are playing a crucial part in supporting the theatre-makers of tomorrow.

Thank you very much, and we hope you enjoy the show.

ABOUT WILD RICE’S DIRECTING RESIDENCY PROGRAMME

GET READY TO MEET TOMORROW’S THEATRE-MAKERS TODAY!

When COVID-19 compelled the closure of our theatre

earlier this year, we made the decision to pivot from

presenting shows to incubating projects and investing in

the future of Singapore theatre.

And so, Wild Rice’s brand-new Directing Residency

Programme was born.

In April 2020, we put out an open call for young directors,

offering successful applicants an opportunity to direct

and present a show before a live audience. We asked

for proposals for shows that speak to the contemporary

moment, address under-explored issues and/or feature

under-represented communities.

We selected four exciting candidates – Victoria Chen,

Hazel Ho, Sim Yan Ying ‘YY’ and Thong Pei Qin – from the

60 submissions we received.

Over the past six months, these incredible young directors

have been working closely with Ivan Heng, our Founding

Artistic Director, to bring their artistic visions to life.

Each director was given the opportunity to choose and

develop their script, cast and rehearse with their actors,

assemble and lead a design team and more.

Today, you will get to see the work of some of the thrilling

new artists who will be helping to shape Singapore’s

theatre industry for generations to come.

MESSAGE FROMTHE DIRECTORWelcome to Mine.

We invite you to join us in digging beyond the stigma of hoarding to understand Molly and Su-Lin as unique individuals, and to uncover the nuances in their mother-daughter relationship.

These days, we are mostly working from home, which means that the spaces in our domestic sphere are overlapping more than ever. It’s so much easier, now, for us all to imagine Molly and Su-Lin living in cramped conditions all their lives, constantly setting boundaries to protect their own possessions and stories. What keeps them together, while also threatening to tear them apart?

In exploring how these characters decide what to keep or discard in life, our team realised how much our own painstaking process of birthing a new play actually mirrors the decluttering of Molly’s home, physically and emotionally.

We began to see the “Molly” in every one of us. I’ve lost count of the number of times a team member has exclaimed, “That’s me!” when coming across an all-too-familiar line about holding on to belongings, or when collecting a recycled item for our set.

I’d like to proudly acknowledge the phenomenal dedication of our talented cast and crew for obsessively crafting every detail of our characters’ world with such care and passion. Thank you for making theatre together with me during this challenging time.

My heartfelt gratitude to dear Ivan, my mentor, and the Wild Rice team for your constant support and belief. Your kind encouragement made it possible for us to stage this new work in 2020.

With the new perspectives we have gained from discovering what drives our characters to choose how they live and love, we are inspired to bring this original new work to our audiences - live in the theatre again.

Come, unearth the treasures within Molly and Su-Lin’s stories with us.

xx,PEI QIN

Page 6: IMDA Advisory: General

Most of us are familiar with the term “hoarding”, often heard during the early days of COVID, alongside the words “toilet roll”. However, hoarding is a serious disorder that has huge emotional, physical, social and financial costs. We may know of hoarders, but few of us understand how their behaviour affects their lives and the lives of those around them.

Mine – like my earlier play, Weight of Emptiness (2016) – seeks to shed some light on being a hoarder and the challenges, frustrations and struggles of living with one. I hope that this play in some small way helps to foster empathy and a better understanding of this complex, widespread, misunderstood affliction, so that we may live more easily with the hoarders among us.

It has truly been a privilege to re-visit and “mine” further the dramatic potential of hoarding. I am very grateful to Ivan and Wild Rice for giving me this opportunity. I am especially grateful to my dramaturg, Alfian, for being so kind, patient, generous and supportive throughout this whole process. I have learnt so much. Finally, thank you to Pei Qin, Karen and Chanel, for their creative and artistic talents that inspire me to think deeper and write better.
