The stated goal of Threshold Reimagined is to [improve] the

    spatial ambiance, environmental quality, function/purpose

and branded presence of the School of Architecture and

Interior Design [SAID]. Through the course of the design

conversation, a variety of options presented themselves. Here

we will outline the reasons for this specic response, and some

    of the design decisions made.

The space currently functions as a connection between

teachers and students, a representation of the school for those

outside the SAID community, an information center, and as a

gallery to display the work of SAID as a whole. The relationship

of teacher and student being well established, the focus was

on the function of the space as gallery and bulletin board. It

became a priority to create some dilineation between these

functions. This organization of the spaces on the east wall

includes a proper lighting of the intended gallery space, and

    the inclusion of electronic multimedia.

We discussed a few directions the brand identity of SAID might

be portrayed. It is easy to suggest that SAID should reinterpret

the UC branding guidelines in an architectural manner, and

paint the hallway black and red. The idea of dissecting SAID

faculty and college publications for a common theme alsopresents itself. But these are both inferior in suggesting the

identity of SAID: Simply that of creating work that incorporates

DIY craft and materiality honest to those processes. This intent

for the school can be seen in the wooden shelves attached

to columns in the studios and the pin up boards in the east-

west hallways. A focus on materiality and detailing created by

the students and faculty that encourages craft and introduces

    new processes.

Combining the commitment to projects with a richprocess and materiality with an acknowledgementof the schools role as a member of the larger DAAPand UC communities.

Allowing this branding goal to inform decisions ofmaterial and form, and creating a more functionalgallery and presentation of information.

Baltic Birch, white drywall, and steel panels are thehighlights of the composition. By using magnetsinstead of pins, the steel panels provide pin upsurface for information and gallery, while addinga rich materiality. The patina on the steel expressesthe craft process, both in the patina itself and inhighlighting the plug welds used in creating each

unit. The metal, set against a black painted wall,is juxtaposed with the existing white drywall on thewest wall. Acting as intermediary, the dynamicceiling composition is crafted of Baltic birchplywood. Baltic birch was chosen for its connectionto the industrial detailing of the steel and lightingxtures, while maintaining a clean richness.

In order to upgrade the existing lighting condition,

two xture types were chosen. LED track lighting

    provides true-color rendering and customizable

direction to the gallery space. Incorporated into

the dynamic ceiling construction, exposed led

lighting tubes providesrhythm in the spaces not

designated as gallery, and are in keeping with

the semi-industrial palette. This lighting can also

serve as emergency lighting for the hallway.

By creating a dynamic relationship of gallery and information presentation, spe-

cic lighting tactics can improve the function of the gallery and the overall en-

vironmental experience. Panelized wall construction allows for further deliniation

between gallery and information presentation, and for incorperation of screens

    for showcasing digital work.

Choosing materials and applications that can be crafted by the SAID community

is consistent with the school philosophy, and puts an emphasis on the beauty of

craft. Incorporating laser cut room signage connects to the colleges desires for

collaboration, and allowing the UC branding to inform the dynamic ceiling nods

to the schools participation in that larger community.

We would like to thank you for the opportunity to imagine the SAID GALLERY. We
