RAISING AGENTS OF CHANGE From professorships, collaborative learning spaces, to research and scholarships, Prima Limited’s continued generosity ensures that SMU remains a premier international university that delivers excellence in research, and education that is aligned with industry needs.

With a strong belief in nurturing change agents of the future through education, Prima Limited endowed a gift of $2 million to SMU to set up the Prima Ceylon Scholarship. This scholarship seeks to motivate incoming undergraduates of Sri Lankan nationality in their first year of study in any degree programme at SMU to reach greater academic heights. With matching contributions from the Singapore government, the total endowed fund for the Prima Ceylon Scholarship amounts to $3 million, and will benefit students every year in perpetuity.

GLOBAL EDUCATION AND SUPPORT FOR THE REGION’S BRIGHTEST One of Bangkok Bank’s ethos is the belief that a strong social infrastructure provides the necessary framework for a vibrant community of productive individuals. Aligned with this notion, Bangkok Bank and SMU established the Bangkok Bank Scholarship in 2013 with the aim of providing a social network of support for aspiring Thai students who seek a global education experience in SMU.

The recently renewed Bangkok Bank Scholarship provides incoming undergraduates of Thai nationality with the opportunity to experience a transformative education in SMU. This scholarship is valued at up to $100,000 or $25,000 per academic year, and will cover the student’s full tuition fees and living expenses.

Through a SMU education, students will be immersed in an environment geared at nurturing them into becoming a new generation of leaders that will thrive in today’s competitive landscape. Internship and career opportunities with Bangkok Bank and its designated companies are also provided.

It has given me the chance to connect with peers who come from a similar background as me. NUTURING GLOBAL CITIZENS OF THE FUTURE As firm believers in the potential life-changing experience that international exposure can offer, Mr David Kho and Mr Han Jong Kwang both established gifts that support undergraduates who aspire to venture overseas as part of an exchange programme.

Mr Kho established the Kho Yu & Chan Sook Lien Exchange Scholarship in honour of his late parents. Valued at $6,000 each, two scholarships are awarded per academic year to SMU undergraduates and students from universities in China, so they may embark on an International Exchange Programme at SMU and partner universities.

Mr Han established the Han Jin Fong Overseas Experience Grant in honour of his grandfather. Per academic year, two grants valued at $5,600 each are awarded for International Exchange Programmes, or three grants valued at $3,750 are awarded for overseas internships.

BUILDING PATHWAYS INTO ASEAN Recognising the increasing importance for students to better understand the business landscape in Asia and develop real-life, problem-solving skills through the experience of different cultures, Mr Raymond Goh and his wife, Kwai Fong Goh established the Kwai Fong & Raymond Goh SMU-XO Grant.

The grant will empower financially needy students to participate in SMU-X* study mission trips in countries across Asia, where they will have opportunities to work on multidisciplinary projects alongside industry partners and faculty.

* The SMU-X programme focuses on a pedagogy that promotes experiential learning through real-world projects.

EQUIPPING SAF’S FUTURE LEADERS WITH THE TOOLS TO REACH NEW HEIGHTS.

MOBILISING A FORCE FOR THE BETTER In 2014, SMU and the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) established the SMU Warriors Scholarship (SWS), a bond-free scholarship that provides SAF servicemen with an avenue to transition into their next career with the help of a SMU Masters degree. To date, the scheme has benefited over 45 scholars.

In appreciation of the learning, networking and career opportunities provided by SMU through the SWS, a group of SWS Alumni came together to pay it forward.

Together the group raised $200,000 to establish the SMU Warriors Fund endowment. The fund will go towards supporting financially needy servicemen studying at the university with a SMU Warriors Bursary, and will provide an opportunity for dedicated national servicemen to strive for academic heights that may otherwise have been unattainable.

Being recipients of SMU scholarships, we are grateful for the opportunities it has opened up for us as we step into new careers after retiring from the Singapore Armed Forces. GIVING BACK TO THE EXPERIENCE THAT SHAPED YOU With the belief that overseas exposure brings new perspectives and fresh ideas to students, while enhancing the way they consider potential business opportunities, SMU Alumni Ivan Chang initiated the SMUpreneurs Overseas Study Mission Fund.

The fund is a collective effort by the SMUpreneurs — a SMU Alumni community of entrepreneurs — to raise an endowment of $200,000 to support overseas study mission grants for students who endeavour to pursue a study mission, but lack the means to do so.

As a scholarship beneficiary himself and the President of SMUpreneurs, Ivan hopes to pay it forward by rallying support from the SMUpreneur community to drive SMU towards its goal of ensuring 100% of its students benefit from global exposure.

IN PURSUIT OF A BETTER WORLD THROUGH LEGAL EDUCATION Through the support of his friends and family, the SMU School of Law established the Joe Grimberg Excellence Fund in honour of the late Mr Joseph Grimberg SC.

The fund serves to assist aspiring but financially needy students as they strive for academic excellence, and seeks to provide important avenues for students and SMU to engage in meaningful research in the areas of dispute resolution.

The late Mr Joseph Grimberg SC was a generous supporter of legal education. His significant contributions to the legal sector were well known, as were his deep care and belief in education. His ideals of leaving a positive impact to the people and communities around him are well felt in SMU, and many of the School of Law’s students have benefitted from his direct engagement and mentorship.

A VIBRANT NEW EDIFICE OF OUR CITY CAMPUS Bridging the School of Accountancy and the School of Law, the Tahir Foundation Connexion building will support the university’s SMU-X pedagogy, which focuses on experiential learning through real-world projects.

This new five-storey green building will bring vibrancy to the city campus and the surrounding Bras Basah Precinct, creating new sheltered pathways that stretch from Fort Canning through the campus and into Armenian Street.

Made possible by a generous donation from the Tahir Foundation, as well as a grant from the Building and Construction Authority, the new Tahir Foundation Connexion will add over 8,600 square metres (sqm) of teaching and learning spaces and enable seamless connectivity through the entire SMU city campus.

The Tahir Foundation Connexion is designed to provide new-generation learning spaces with flexibility and future adaptability, and includes active learning classrooms, brainstorming hubs, collaborative zones, integrated learning studios, and a makerspace. The ample learning spaces will create socialising opportunities between the SMU community and industry practitioners, with about 500 sqm to be set aside as incubation spaces that will foster innovation and entrepreneurship among SMU students and alumni.

Boasting a number of green features, technologies and smart systems, the Tahir Foundation Connexion is slated to be the city’s first On-site Net Zero Energy Building — drawing power from a self-sustainable photovoltaic system located on the premises. With a long-term goal towards a smart and green campus, the Tahir Foundation Connexion reflects the university’s competencies in urban sustainability and demonstrates SMU’s desire to both protect the environment and encourage a better quality of living for the communities around its campus through innovative solutions.

The family unit is the most vital and sustainable unit of society. In order for family continuation to exist, and longevity and legacy to be built, family entrepreneurship is key. ADVANCING THE BUSINESS OF FAMILY ENTERPRISE Since 2013, Mr Ron Sim has been a Founding Family member of the SMU Business Families Institute (BFI @ SMU). The institute was established to offer strategic advice to business families in the region, whilst drawing on the university’s research expertise and involvement in industry practices.

Mr Ron Sim and the V3 Group recently made an endowed gift of $3 million to establish the V3 Group Professorship in Family Entrepreneurship. Launched at the BFI @ SMU’s 5th anniversary celebration, the gift will strengthen BFI @ SMU’s research capabilities, and further cement its position as Southeast Asia’s pioneer regional business family institute.

The professorship creates outstanding opportunities for SMU faculty to actively challenge existing understandings and to contribute ground-breaking research that will strengthen, promote, and unlock the growth and development of family entrepreneurship in Singapore and beyond.

Being awarded this professorship provides a tremendous boost to my work. THE MEANS TO TACKLE TODAY’S SOCIETAL CHALLENGESBig things often have small beginnings, and behind the success of SMU is Professor Janice Bellace, who served as SMU’s first President and laid the foundation for SMU to become a premier university, internationally recognised for its world-class research and distinguished teaching.

In honour of SMU’s first President, the Janice Bellace Professorship was established and made possible by seven current and former members of SMU’s Board of Trustees. The professorship will support SMU’s commitment in tackling today’s most pressing societal challenges; contributing towards the advancement of society through the development of new solutions and approaches to address these issues.

Professorships such as this also encourage our world-class faculty to leverage SMU’s collaborative approach to research, where they are free to chart discoveries, exchange knowledge beyond borders and engage in multidisciplinary debate across schools and with other universities.

ENCOURAGING INNOVATION TOWARDS SOCIAL BETTERMENT IN NEPALWith the goal of leveraging collaborative human-centric design to break the cycle of poverty in Nepal and produce tangible long-term benefits, Lotus Life Foundation and SMU’s Lien Centre for Social Innovation (Lien Centre) have established The Lotus Initiative.

This five-year initiative was made possible through Lotus Life Foundation’s pledge of a $3 million term gift to Lien Centre, and will see the implementation of a multipronged programme involving multiple stakeholders to drive social innovation and entrepreneurship development in Nepal.

Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development goals, the partnership will engage SMU faculty and students, social purpose organisations, social innovators and entrepreneurs, multisector partners, and professionals to work on diverse issues ranging from Gender Equality to Clean Water Sanitation, Education and Economic Growth.

STRENGTHENING OUR COMMITMENT TOWARDS MENTAL WELL-BEINGMore than just a place of learning, SMU strives to create an environment and community that promotes intellectual and emotional well-being. As part of this commitment, the Mrs Wong Kwok Leong Student Wellness Centre was dedicated to providing students with top quality mental health support. The facility provides safe spaces for students to explore and manage their personal lives through attending sessions with our professional counsellors, or to simply have a mental repose from the daily rigours of academic life.

Through the continued and generous support from Dato’ Kho Hui Meng, a member of SMU’s Board of Trustees, the centre will strengthen its capabilities with an additional student counsellor over the next five years. This gift also provides the centre with opportunities to scale their programmes, and enhance the efficiency and reach of their mental wellness programmes.

34CELEBRATING FIVE YEARS OF CHAMPIONING FAMILY BUSINESS IN ASIAThe SMU Business Families Institute (BFI @ SMU) brings academic rigour and applied knowledge to the prevalent field of family business here in Asia and beyond. In conjunction with the 5th anniversary dinner celebrations, BFI @ SMU launched a new book titled “The 4Gs of Business Families”.

The book brings important thought leadership and applied knowledge to bear on key issues around Generations, Growth, Giving and Global issues as they pertain to family business. In collaboration with 34 successful business families, the book provides insights into how and why family businesses prevail during tough economic times.

The joyous occasion was officiated by Ms Grace Fu, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, and saw a collective donation of $800,000 that will go towards supporting BFI @ SMU’s goal in becoming a thought leader for knowledge related to Asian Family Businesses.

BFI is grateful to our Founding and Alliance Families, who have, from the beginning, believed in the immense value that such an institute can bring to business families in the region and beyond. BRINGING SMU-X TO LIFE THROUGH ART SMU-X is a signature SMU programme that seeks to ensure our students and faculty have an opportunity to collaborate with industry players to tackle problems in real-world scenarios. This applied approach to courses and curriculum will help drive the SMU community to adopt a collaborative and real-world approach in problem solving.

Under the guidance of Mr Wang Zineng, founder of Art Agenda, S.E.A., students from the SMU School of Social Sciences launched an art exhibition featuring the works of the late Chua Ek Kay. Themed “A Long Way from Home / 近観 逺濤”, the exhibition commemorates the 10th anniversary of Mr Chua’s passing and celebrates his contributions to Singapore’s art history.

Through the generosity of an anonymous donor, SMU students were offered a unique opportunity to curate and organise the exhibition, with support from a professional exhibition team. The exhibition also served as a case study for students to examine the critical issues and components of an exhibition — from research, design and programming to audience engagement.

I am very happy to be able to work with students as well as former and current colleagues to realise a professionally presented exhibition. CONTRIBUTING TO THE RISE OF ASIAThe SMU International Advisory Councils (IACs) across China and key Southeast Asian countries are crucial platforms for the SMU community to actively engage with the region, and collaborate with a global network of governments, academic institutions and business leaders to drive new knowledge and development of innovative solutions for better economies, industries and societies.

2018 was a bustling year for the SMU IACs, which saw council launches in China, Thailand and Indonesia, and the inaugural SMU International Advisory Council Asia Summit in Singapore. Three SMU Industry Leaders Dialogues were also held in China, Myanmar and the Philippines. Currently, SMU has IACs established in Myanmar, Vietnam, China, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

Launch of SMU IAC in China spotlights China’s rising economy The launch of the SMU IAC in China saw the hosting of a SMU Industry Leaders Dialogue in Hong Kong that focused on leadership in the age of change, and China’s growing potential as a leading innovator in the global economy. The dialogue served as a timely opportunity for SMU to better their understanding of China’s industries and strengthen its relationship with over 120 business, government and academic leaders from the nation.

Launch of SMU IAC in Thailand tackles issues in the age of disruption In conjunction with the SMU IAC launch in Thailand, the SMU-Bangkok Bank Industry Leaders Dialogue was co-hosted with Bangkok Bank to discuss the role of governments in creating frameworks to better manage and leverage business disruptions, foster innovation and spur economic growth in Thailand and beyond. The dialogue gathered together over 180 business, government and academic leaders, and culminated in a panel discussion moderated by Professor Annie Koh, Vice-President, Office of Business Development, SMU; Academic Director, Business Families Institute and International Trading Institute @ SMU; and Practice Professor of Finance, SMU.

Launch of SMU IAC in Indonesia explores “Firms of the Future” With Indonesia being one of the fastest growing internet markets in the world, a SMU Industry Leaders Dialogue was held in Jakarta to define “The Indonesian Firm of the Future”. Innovative ideas on building virtual and physical connectivity were shared, ultimately creating important pathways for potential collaborative opportunities between Singapore and Indonesia. Professor Dr Pratikno, M.Soc.Sc., Minister of State Secretary, Indonesia delivered the keynote address, and Mr Ir Airlangga Hartarto, MBA, MMT, Minister of Industry, Indonesia graced the event as a panellist.

SMU Industry Leaders Dialogue in Shanghai, ChinaSubsequent to the launch of the IAC in China, a SMU Industry Leaders Dialogue was held in Shanghai. Amidst the ongoing trade disputes between China and the U.S., the dialogue discussed how China could unlock opportunities to develop higher-skilled industries and expedite its ‘Made in China 2025’ policy to capitalise on the current macro-economic landscape.

SMU Industry Leaders Dialogue in Manila, Philippines Jointly hosted with Ayala Corporation, the SMU-Ayala Industry Leaders Dialogue in Manila explored the socio-economic conditions of cities in development, and how progress often brings about the erosion of treasured traditions and heritage. During the dialogue, Professor Lily Kong shared on the expansion of the definition of environmental sustainability to include liveable heritage spaces that have served as important repositories of countless human memories.

SMU Industry Leaders Dialogue in Yangon, Myanmar While the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has become the centrepiece of China’s foreign policy, details of the project and how the BRI might evolve in countries such as Myanmar remain unclear. The SMU Industry Leaders Dialogue in Yangon convened industry and government players to discuss the potential pitfalls and opportunities arising from the BRI for Myanmar, with a panel discussion that culminated into an encouraging outlook towards China’s proposed investment.

IMAGINING AND BUILDING A BETTER ASIA The inaugural SMU International Advisory Council Asia Summit took place on the 16th and 17th of August 2018. Held at the SMU campus, the summit saw over 30 members from the SMU International Advisory Councils (IACs) in China, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam come together to debate emerging issues and discuss future collaborations.

Themed “ASEAN & China: Intelligent Integration and Sustainability”, the Asia Summit considered the many challenges and opportunities that face ASEAN and China. The executive-style seminar sessions, which were led by SMU’s faculty, propelled SMU’s thought leadership to the fore and allowed the exchange of faculty perspectives with industry leadership.

Following the success of its very first summit, this bi-annual dialogue will seek to ensure a robust consideration of what the future holds for Asia, and acts as an important platform for the exchange of ideas, information and collaborative solutions.

As a global-city university rooted in Asia, the diversity and challenges of Asia form the bedrock of SMU’s approach to education, research and industry collaboration.
