A Foundation For A Bright FutureTo the St. Richard’s Episcopal School family, superior education is more often seen as the day-to-day experience of students than a lofty goal. From the curriculum to extracurricular activities, classroom leadership to community involvement—students will find an SRES education to be unlike any other.

Our graduates stand out from the crowd, having benefited from an education founded on the five pillars for success that allow students to flourish as independent critical thinkers, leaders, and citizens.

The Five Pillars for SuccessGlobal Readiness Students participate in a nationally-awarded language program. In addition to learning French, Spanish or Latin, they have the opportunity to participate in exchange programs and global competitions. This enhances the experience of an already diverse student body, representing more than 36 countries.

Faith As diverse in faith as it is in nationality and ethnicity, SRES’s community values expose our students to many faith traditions along with the Episcopal tenets in their divinity curriculum and chapel experience.

Classic Curriculum Founded on a classic curriculum, SRES uses every class as an opportunity to teach foundational skills, such as note taking and public speaking, alongside subject matter. Students are exposed to quality literature, an exceptional world language program, high-leveled math and science offerings and exposure to the visual and musical arts.

Leadership The honor system is more than a policy for students; it is a lesson in leadership and respect, as well as an outlook on every student’s responsibility. The teacher to student ratio makes classroom leadership an everyday experience, while the variety of clubs and student government organization make being a leader a widespread opportunity. Middle Division students serve as role models for younger students through formal and informal mentoring.

Civic Responsibility Community service, involvement in the surrounding neighborhood and modeling good manners for younger students are integral parts of the Middle Division students’ role at SRES.

Expanding Minds And Global Insights A diverse group of students united in the pursuit of scholastic achievement has been a part of the St. Richard’s tradition since its inception more than 50 years ago. Our teachers and staff foster an educational atmosphere that allows for discussion of current events, logical argument and personal narrative that bring subject matter to life. SRES students are challenged to look at the world differently.

Curriculum for SRES students focuses around concepts, subjects and skill sets that are challenging. Our students also graduate with a firm grasp on the foundational skills needed to thrive—writing essays, researching, taking notes, study skills, summarizing, teamwork and organization.

Small class sizes lend a sense of close camaraderie among students—with friendships that build throughout the years and make alumni and their parents life-long friends. Students appreciate having more one-on-one time with teachers both during class and before for extra guidance.

“SRES has provided our children with a strong education that will prepare them to become life-long learners and contributing

global citizens. The teachers create an excitement for learning through their

innovative approaches, such as thoughtful writing exercises and hand-on projects.

These purposeful lessons build an interest and understanding in all aspects of life. The most important opportunity we can provide

our children is the gift of an excellent education, and that is happening at SRES.”

—Dan & Marianna Gerritzen

The World Inside The Classroom

“The teaching in middle school promotes development of the whole person through opportunities in the Classic Curriculum with language, music, literature, science as well as other traditional subjects. There are many places to find a fit, as well as a place to be challenged from chess and robotics, to Latin club, soccer, basketball, track and more. Learning at SRES brings unique and intriguing approaches to teaching—making our children excited to return to school everyday for more.”

“St. Richard’s students learn outstanding interpersonal and ‘soft skills,’ because they arrive as 9th graders with a certain poise and maturity which helps them to cultivate relationships and to become leaders in their areas of interest.”

Teams of students support each other in the classroom while competing with other—sometimes high school-aged—students in Academic Olympics and Junior Classical League, sports and “We The People.” Here, curiosity and the drive to pursue activities after school are rewarded with rich opportunities that encourage leadership.

Our students also understand that the SRES community includes its neighbors. Whether they’re stocking our campus food pantry or singing on behalf of the Salvation Army, community service is a point of pride for our students. Along with giving back, they find independence in running their own philanthropic service alongside an active student government.

Knowing we’re one part of a global community, SRES works to take students beyond the classroom. Each year, Grade 8 students take part in a trip to Washington, D.C., where they explore the nation’s capital to see what they’ve learned in action. To bolster students’ understanding of French, we host an annual exchange program where Grade 5 SRES students live with families in France and we host French buddies for extended stays in Indianapolis. Team building activities and overnight retreats are integrated into the school year, often held at Waycross Retreat Center.

Our global perspective is reflected in the fabric of our families that attend St. Richard’s. Their international roots represent 36 different countries.

St. Richard’s students graduate with a rich understanding of the world around them and the skills to continue their educational journey.

Learning Beyond The Classroom

Set Your Child Up To SucceedThe Families and Work Institute, having reviewed more 1,000 studies from over 85 leading researchers, has identified an evidence-based list of seven life skills that are essential for children in the short- and long-term. These skills are as follows:• Focus and Self-Control• Perspective Taking• Communicating• Making Connections• Critical Thinking• Taking on Challenges• Self-Directed, Engaged Learning

To the staff and community of St. Richard’s Episcopal School’s Middle Division, the skills that will allow our students to reach their full potential are as important as the subject matter we teach each class.
