ACADEMICSWe’re part of the University of North Carolina System and one of North Carolina’s 16 public universities, consistently recognized at a national level for academic excellence and affordability. U.S. News & World Report ranked UNCW among the Top 100 Public National Universities in its Best Colleges 2020 guidebook, the first time the university has been included in the national category since receiving the elevated designation of “Doctoral Universities: High Research Activity” institution from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. U.S. News also ranked UNCW’s online bachelor’s program 8th best in the country in 2019.

Applied learning is an essential part of the UNCW student experience, as students integrate theories, ideas and skills into new settings. The university prepares students for the global world beyond the classroom through four core categories of applied learning: undergraduate research, study abroad, internships and service learning. Advisors will help you choose your direction and take the right steps as you chart your academic path.

COMPREHENSIVE ARTICULATION AGREEMENT (CAA) The North Carolina General Assembly, the Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina and the State Board of Community Colleges are committed to simplifying the transfer of credits for students, thus facilitating their educational progress as they pursue associate or baccalaureate degrees with public post-secondary institutions in N.C. The CAA is a statewide agreement governing the transfer of credits between N.C. community colleges and state public universities. Its objective is to facilitate the smooth transfer of students, providing certain assurances to the transferring student by identifying community college courses that are appropriate for transfer as electives and specifying courses that satisfy pre-major and general education requirements.

uCreate your personal web portal and receive periodic mailings, register for a campus tour and apply.

sealevel.uncw.eduFINANCIAL AID fafsa.ed.gov To receive financial aid, all eligible students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). It is available Oct. 1 at www.fafsa.ed.gov for completion for the new academic year.

You must re-apply each year you are in school.

UNCW has a priority filing date of Jan. 1 (fall). The earlier you apply, the greater your chances for receiving grant dollars, if you are eligible.

UNCW’s school code is 002984.

RESIDENCY FOR TUITION PURPOSESThe specific requirements for establishing residency for tuition purposes and for eligibility for state financial aid are prescribed by state law. A North Carolina resident for tuition purposes (and for state financial aid consideration) is a person or a dependent person whose parent or legal guardian has established and maintained legal residence in North Carolina for at least 12 months.

In order to be considered for North Carolina residency, please be sure to complete residency determination prior to beginning your UNCW application at www.ncresidency.org.

UNCW SCHOLARSHIPS uncw.edu/finaid/scholarships

The university recognizes the excellent academic record and promise of outstanding students by offering a limited number of renewable merit scholarships. There is no separate application for merit scholarships; all students are considered for these opportunities on the basis of their application for admission. Our holistic review of scholarship candidates considers academic achievement, leadership qualities, commitment to service and promise of engagement in the life of the university.

NEED-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS For individuals who qualify on the basis of need, most financial aid is provided in the form of need-based scholarships or grants from federal, state, university or private sources. Need-based scholarships range from $1,000 to the full cost of in-state tuition.

WORK-STUDY AND STUDENT EMPLOYMENT uncw.edu/career

The Federal Work-Study Program allows qualified recipients to earn part of their financial aid through employment on campus and in community service agencies. Participants may select from a wide variety of available jobs to meet their interests, skills and career plans. Work-Study is a need-based program and funding is limited.

Those students who do not meet the criteria for Federal Work-Study can still apply for available jobs through the UNCW Career Center.

LOANS uncw.edu/finaid

The Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid administers a number of student loan programs, which provide low-interest, long-term loans to students. Loans require repayment after the student leaves school.
