Spring Open House
The Cherry Engineering Building had over 250 guest from incoming
and prospective students on February 23 at Lamar University Open
House. Visitors at the College of Engineering had the opportunity to
meet with the Department Chair and staff from each of the 5
departments within the college, the Engineering Office of Student
Services and student organizations throughout Cherry. The day started
out with a greeting from the Dean, Dr. Jack Hopper, who gave
everyone an overview of the college and instructions on making the
most of the day’s event.
Each of the college’s 5 departments also offered individual sessions for
students and parents to acquire more information about the program,
research currently being conducted and insight into future projects
students can participate in. After sessions concluded, every guest had
the opportunity to visit the rest of the campus, eat lunch in the Dining
Hall, and visit with various student service departments.

A native of Port Arthur, Bob Jones graduated
in 1973 with a B.S. in civil engineering with
the environmental track and later earned his
master of engineering degrees from UT in
Austin. The Texas Water Quality Board hired
him in July 1973. Jones advanced at the state,
eventually becoming chief engineer of the
Construction Grants and Water Quality Plan-
ning Division. In 1976, Bob met and married
Beth, his wife of 37 years. The couple has two
children. Recognizing the opportunity to cre-

"An important number of the vessels of various segments that transit the Canal today have as
port of origin or destination the U.S. Gulf ports. Furthermore, once the Panama Canal
Expansion is concluded there is also a great potential for exports of shale gas from this specific
area that could use our waterway to markets in the Pacific," Quijano said.Read More
