Traceability Inspections are required pre-use by wearer and a 6 monthly thorough examination by a competent person. It is recommended that equipment used in arduous environments (e.g. demolition, steel erection, scaffolding) is inspected every 3 months. All thorough examinations and interim inspections must be recorded. Pre-use checks by user needs to be tactile and visual. Training in the use of the harness needs to be given and a record kept. Some manufacturers recommend an obsolescence date, normally 5 years from purchase. Keep a register of all harnesses and lanyards. Combine this with a controlled inspection regime. WebbingInspect for cuts, burns, tears, abrasion, fraying, excessive soiling, discolouration and heat damage.

StitchingInspect for pulled or cut stitches.

Synthetic RopeInspect for pulled or cut yarns, burns, abrasions, knots, excessive soiling and discolouration.

Energy Absorbing ComponentInspect for elongation, tears and exessive soiling.

LabelsEnsure all inspection labels are in place and legible. Details of supplier, inspection dates should be with the harness and lanyard.
