I.T. Blog - A scam or two!

It’s amazing how inventive the bad guys can be when it

comes to conning you out of either your cash or personal

details. Scams tend to target the weakest of us and recently

we’ve had customers who have been preyed on by very

friendly and approachable conmen, who are exploiting their

lack of technical know-how and worst fears about their own

personal computer. It all starts with your phone ringing and

when you pick it up a friendly, and very persuasive, voice

advises you that they have detected issues with your

computer over the internet. Now, at this stage they don’t even

know if you have a computer, although obviously most of us

do, and they probably get rebuffed more often than not.

However, it’s frightening how many people then log on to their

computer and, by visiting a website, give this unknown person

full access to their system.

So now they have access to everything on your computer,

but that isn’t enough, so next they will explain that to fix the

problem you need to download some software, but there is a

cost, so you give them your name, address and credit card

details. Once you’ve downloaded the software things generally

start to go wrong, at which point the voice on the other end of

the phone leaves you to your own devices, never to be heard

from again.

Now a lot of you are probably thinking that you would never

fall for this, as within this context it sounds very obvious,

however these conmen can be incredibly persuasive and a

reassuring voice can get away with quite a lot under the right

circumstances. All we can really stress is that if somebody

calls you, or you get an email you are unsure of, whatever you

do don’t go to any

websites or give

out any personal

details without

getting further

advice from

someone that you

Bridesmaids: Lindy (friend), Helen (friend), Anne (sister in law) andAshleigh (cousin)

Jamie and Colleen met at a mutual friend's house six years ago. They

soon became friends and shortly after, this blossomed into a close

relationship. In June 2008 Jamie got down on one knee and asked

Colleen to make him the happiest man in the world. She was

delighted and said yes straight away!

wedding relax and enjoy the day!

A few months later the date for the wedding was set

and the Drumossie Hotel was booked as their venue.

The wedding day was all Jamie and Colleen had

hoped for and more. Although it was a large

wedding, it was very much a family affair as Colleen

comes from a large family and the couple are both

very family orientated. To be surrounded by friends

and family meant a lot to the couple and made the

day truly memorable for them.

After the wedding the couple jetted off on their

honeymoon for a once in a lifetime holiday to Las

Vegas, LA and New York.

When asked what advice she would give to brides

to be, Colleen said it would simply be to relax and

enjoy the day as it passes so quickly!

Most of us will set some New Year’s Resolutions, even if we don’tspeak them out loud. Most of us will also fail to keep those NewYear’s Resolutions, because we don’t speak them out loud. TheNew Year is the perfect time to set these goals (and that’s all Resolutions are; Goals) because wefeel that we can put the past behind us and step forward into a new time, mind frame andconsciousness. Of course the truth is you could do this at any time of the year, we’re just in thehabit of only doing it in January.If you want to be one of the people who stick to their goals, Donald MacNaughton can helpyou. The key to succeeding is to know what success is for you; whether it’s about improving yourbusiness or career, losing weight, making more money or improving your working and personalrelationships, we’ve come up with a few easy ways to make sure it happens.

• Keep it REAL – Set yourself challenging but realistic goals, there’s nothing more disheartening than getting halfwaythere and realising you’re never going to make it to the top.

• Make it CLEAR – Write down your goal/s. Write in your best handwriting on some beautifulpaper and keep it somewhere you can look at it every day.

• Say it LOUD – Nothing is stronger than the power of repetition. Stand in front of a mirror andrepeat your goal, using positive language, every day, twice a day if you want! Say it oftenenough, you’ll start believing it.

Of course, setting goals is only the beginning, there is more to being successful than simply statingyour goals and waiting for it to happen. If it was that easy we would all be in a permanent stateof bliss. Ask yourself what you need to make your goals a reality; do you have all the skills andtools at hand to make it happen? If the answer is no (and it often will be) then ask yourself whoaround you has what you need. Can you go on a course, or read a book that will provide youwith the necessary equipment? Sometimes you won’t know what you need, but there will bepeople around you who can help with that, people who are on your ‘team’.

One of the really important things about goals and how to make them happen is choosing the‘team’ of people who are around you. This might be your partner, friends, parents and colleagues.You know yourself who on your team helps you already, who encourages you to push harder, tobe bolder and those who are having a negative effect – people who encourage you to stayout too late, to settle, to do the things you know aren’t right for you. Start to get smart about whois on that team, make sure their on your side and pulling towards the same goals you are. Cut the

The power ofwords to hurt and harm isprobably greater than that ofweapons, which few of us,thankfully ever wield in earnest.So too, the positive power of words- and a smiling face - is massive.In Scotland, we can be a bit dour!Recently in Holyrood, I sat induring the ‘Time for Reflection’which often comprises a religiousmessage which starts theparliamentary week. I was awarethat the lady delivering themessage, standing in the Chamber,beside the Presiding Officer, wasobviously nervous. I was sitting inthe front row, and therefore did mybest to encourage her by smilingand by nodding at key points ofher message - which incidentallywas both humorous and telling.

I was greatly surprised andtouched to receive a note from her,saying that my beaming smile had

helped her cope with what musthave been a nerve wrackingexperience - but one which shehad enjoyed! I say this as someonewho is probably not known forbeaming smiles!

The power of thanks, too, is great,especially for young people - andparticularly in my privileged roleas a Minister. I recently attendedan evening event where groups ofyoung people from schools whohad made short films presentedthem to a large audience. Thefilms aimed to promote theGovernment campaign againstcarrying knives - ‘No knives,better lives.’ I was bowled over bythe huge range, imagination andhumour which the several shortfilms contained. The reservoir oftalent of our young in Scotland isthere to be seen, and youngpeople’s achievements are notrecognised sufficiently. I said so -and this may encourage theseyoung people to greater efforts .Even I was young once - despitemy mother Winnie once saying,thoughtfully, “The thing aboutFergus was that he was born olderthan me.”

Politically, economicallyand personally, 2010was an important year.This coming year, 2011,is going to be a difficultyear, where resolve inseeing through difficultdecisions is going to becrucial to ensuring thatwe get back onto a pathof growing prosperity infuture.

The Hogmanay party inInverness this year wassuperb - with the RedHot Chilli Pipersproviding a wonderfulshow for all the family.But my personalhighlight came on 3rdJanuary.

I grew up in Glengarryin Lochaber, and everyyear I go back for

annual New Year claypigeon shooting matchheld by the GlengarryGun Club. The venue inKingie is somewhatexposed - the wind, rainand sleet were in fullforce this year - but it isgood fun and anopportunity to catch upwith old friends.

I have always been a'moderate' shot, but thisyear, wonder ofwonders, managed towin the Tomdoun Trophyin the handicapcompetition - my firstwin in nearly 25 years oftrying!

As well as serving the ScottishEpiscopal (part of the world-wideAnglican Communion) communities ofSt Mary’s Culloden and St John’s,Inverness, I also act as the AnglicanChaplain to Raigmore Hospital. Likemany major employers they operatean ‘Equality and Diversity’ policy. Whatthat means is that no matter the race,colour, sexual orientation, religious orsecular beliefs (the diversity that existswithin the hospital), all are treated asequals. But, given that I am a ministerof religion, I would like to dwell for afew moments on the religious aspect.

Many people who tend to knock theChurch point to the fact that we are sodiverse - the multitude of differentdenominations that make up the wholeof the world-wide Christian Church -and use that diversity as a weaponagainst us. They seem to feel that aswe claim that there is one God, andsalvation is to be found in his only Son,Jesus Christ, then there should be nodenominations, no diversity, all shouldbe the same, singing from the same‘hymn sheet.’ But that detracts fromthe fact that God has not made us allthe same. We are different. We allpossess different gifts and talents.Most of us are of average intelligence

and very few are members of MENSA.So in our creation there is diversity. Butthere is one thing that we do profess:‘that we are all of equal worth in God’seyes.’ So with God there is equalitywithin our diversity.

The history of the Church both locallyand world-wide tends to suggest thatwe were more aware of the diversitythat existed between thedenominations, and oblivious to theequality. And this has caused, downthrough the centuries, much loss of lifeand much bitterness. The ‘foundingfathers’ of the newly independentUnited States of America wrote intotheir Constitution, the Bill of Rights (theFirst Amendment): “Congress shallmake no law respecting anestablishment of religion, or prohibitingfree exercising of religion.” ThomasJefferson said (1807) “among theinestimable of our blessings, also, isthat ...of liberty to worship our Creatorin the way we think most agreeable toHis will; ...”The First Amendment givesthe people the right to worship (or not)in the way they chose - so bothdiversity and equality is enshrined intheir Bill of Rights.

Today the Church works together and

acknowledges both the diversity ofworship, and the equality of thatworship. The majority of the churchesin Inverness are comfortable inworshipping with their neighbours, andin the style of their neighbours.

The seasons of Advent and Lent, andthe Week of Prayer for Christian Unity,are times when the churches cometogether; these major festivals are alsooccasions when the diversity and theequality are joyfully acknowledged.The Pope, in his recent visit to theseshores, worshiped alongsiderepresentatives of the reformedchurches in an English Cathedral - anacknowledgement of the equality ofdiffering traditions.

Today the churches are not that farapart. We celebrate in our own stylesand traditions and we don’t see thediversity as a stumbling block to amore ecumenical way of workingtogether to bring in God’s kingdomhere on earth. And when all that issaid, that is what we, all of us whoworship God, are called to do.

�Venison Hotpot

Warms the cockles!

At this time of year, it’s dark, cold and in truth, quitedepressing, so to cheer yourself up, why not cookyourself a warm and comforting hotpot....glass of shirazand a cosy fire and believe me, you will feel better!

Hotpots were orignially created for long bones oflancastrian sheep, which acted as a frame to hold theother ingredients. Sheep breeds have changed over theyears and not all are as robust as the Lancastrian so agreat alternative is Venison.

What You Need..8 Venison Chops4 Venison Kidneys, sliced - if yoy cant get venison kidneys, use lambs2 ½ lbs of Sliced Potatoes - I find baking spuds the best6 slices of Black Pudding4 Onions, sliced fairly thickly¾ pint of lamb stockOil & ButterSalt & Pepper

How To Make It..Preheat your oven to 180˚c. Trim most of the fat off

the chops, leaving a little thin trim, and brown in a panalong with the kidneys. This should only take 3-4 minutes.

Rub an oven proof dish with a little butter then puta layer of potatoes in. Add a couple of chops, somekidneys, black pudding and onion. Season with salt &pepper. Repeat this, finishing with a layer of potato.

Pour the stock over the dish and leave for 5 minutes. Add a couple of knobs of butter on to the top.Cover and cook for 2 hours to get a nice golden browntop. Remove the cover for the last 20 minutes.

Business

Provost J gray informed members that a

request for an Emergency resolution had

been received, as follows: ‘We the

undersigned, request Inverness City

Committee condemn the recent decision by

TECS Committee of Highland Council to

outsource the ground maintenance in

Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey.

We believe no cognisance has been taken

of the value of the Council’s workforce in the

said areas who are multi-skilled and are

presently at the forefront of snow clearing

and gritting in this area and other

emergency works. The Council’s workforce

is flexible and adaptable, able to respond to

a range of needs in relation to the demands

of communities, which is unlikely to be

available from an outsourced contract,

which, if available, would cost significantly

more than the £27,000 savings each year in

the Provost considered the request and

noted that the decision referred to in the

proposed resolution had been taken at the

transport, Environment and Community

services Committee with a notice of

amendment having already been submitted

to the next full highland Council meeting.

Consequently, the Provost was satisfied that

members would have an opportunity to

discuss the issue at Council when all the

relevant information would be available and

therefore refused the request that the

Emergency resolution be accepted as

competent Committee Business

Presentation - Visit by the Inverness

Highland Games Touring Party to the

Basque Country

the Events officer provided members with

an overview of the recent visit to the Basque

Country by the inverness highland games

touring Party which included the highland

youth Pipe Band and the Caledonian Canal

Ceilidh trailers. the highland contingency

had been invited by the Basque

government to participate in an annual

festival which attracted visitors in excess of

40,000. mr r Pedersen asked members to

note that the trip had been done at no

expense to the highland Council. some of

the highlights of the visit had been : the

success of the young performers who had

been excellent ambassadors for the culture

of the highlands, particularly the gaelic

speakers; the phenomenal community

involvement in the organisation of the

festival; the rapport that had been built up

between the Basques and the highlanders;

and the intention to investigate developing

cultural and economic links with the region.

Supporting Vulnerable People through

Multi-Agency Working

there had been circulated report no. iCC

48/10 dated 19 november 2010 by the

Director of housing and Property updating

members on : initiatives taken forward

around multi agency working, focusing on

developing positive activities which were

initially outlined in a report to City Committee

on 2 november 2009; and local service

developments around positive activities for

marginalised homeless people.

the Principal housing officer summarised

the report highlighting the fact that

homelessness was often a result of many

complex and challenging issues affecting

applicants including : substance misuse;

mental health issues; and criminal justice

issues.

as a result, improved partnership working

across agencies was required to help

prevent or sustainably resolve

homelessness. housing and Property

services required the expertise of other

services and Partner agencies to

understand why people were making certain

lifestyle choices thus enabling the Council

to get better at assessing the needs of

applicants.

members welcomed this report noting that,

although homelessness was not as

prevalent in inverness as in other cities

around the country, it had become a focus

because of a lack of accommodation

elsewhere in the highlands. members also

commented that : the average time of stay in

temporary accommodation was too long

(average 18 months) and ways of reducing

this time should be looked at; once

tenancies were allocated, many tenants

required additional support to ensure their

tenancy could be sustained; changes to the

benefit system and current economic

pressures could lead to additional

applications for accommodation; the

availability of cheap alcohol often

exacerbated the issues affecting vulnerable

people; early intervention was vitally

important to help support those facing

homelessness; homelessness was complex

and could happen very fast, where

homeless people often became the victims

of crime themselves; there were many

voluntary and third sector organisations

providing vital support who could access

funding not always available to the larger

agencies; social support networks were

required to help people occupy their time

when living in hostels or temporary

accommodation; government restrictions on

the building of Council housing had added

to the problems faced by the Council;

providing accommodation was only the first

step for vulnerable people, they often

required help in managing their finances and

a way of structuring their lives to have

purpose; the use of huntly house should be

reviewed to ascertain if it could be

resurrected as a short stay hostel.; some

people would not be able to sustain

tenancies and therefore hostel

accommodation was still required; and

prisons played a vital role in ensuring that

prisoners were supported upon release.

officers reassured members that Council

services were working together to use their

combined resources to try to alleviate the

problems arising from homelessness and

rough sleeping and commented that : front

line officers faced real challenges on a daily

basis; street work projects with partnership

organisations were helping to keep rough

sleeping at a relatively low level; the

housing and Property service was working

with the private sector to increase the

housing stock available; a measured and

assertive approach was being taken with

young people presenting themselves as

homeless and early intervention was

essential.

BiodiversityWhat’s it all about?

Biodiversity is a word that was coined in 1985 to describethe variety of all life on earth and the places that it lives.Biodiversity is everything from butterflies to bluebells, whelksto whales, ponds to mountain plateaux. It is the backdrop toour daily lives and it is everywhere, even in the busiest ofcities; though it is seldom noticed.

For most people the place where we first encounterbiodiversity is on our doorsteps. During our childhoodexplorations we will pick Daisies and some of us will makeDaisy chains or we will guess the time with a Dandelion clockor watch helicopter seeds fall from a Sycamore tree anddefinitely find out that Nettles and Wasps are best avoided. Aside from giving us memories of childhood exploration and

discovery, on a largerscale our economy is verymuch built on biodiversity;be it clean water fordrinking or the whiskyindustry, the grass thatthe cattle and sheep eator the landscapes thatthe tourists marvel at. It isalso a major tourismincome for our area, thesuccess of Springwatchand Autumnwatch haveshowcased the area andbrought more touristshere. Biodiversity and ourhealth and wealth areinseparable.

In Highland and Moray we are very fortunate to have somuch of interest on our doorstep. I would like to mention afew of the special species that we have up here.

Bott lenose DolphinsA population of around 130 live in the Moray Firth and rangeall the way down to the Firth of Forth. They are a major drawfor tourists and an unforgettable sight if you get a good lookat them. They are very big, which is something you might notexpect. They can be upbto 4m or 12ft long, the reason theyare so big is to keep warm in our cold waters. They are themost northerly resident population of Bottlenose Dolphins inthe world. www.scottishdolphins.info

SealsThese animals can be taken for granted as they are in mostof the harbours in our area. There are two species, the Greyand Common. The Common stays in our waters all year

round and can breed on tidal sandbanks as the pups canswim almost immediately after birth. The Grey Seal pups willbe 3 weeks old before they can swim so their breeding isrestricted to remote islands or isolated coves where the pupscan grow in safety. 40% of the world’s Grey Seal populationis found in the UK and most of that is in Scotland.www.smru.st-andrews.ac.uk/documents/IdentifyingSeals.pdf

Red SquirrelThis species is a huge favourite for its tufty ears and acrobaticantics. If you want to see it then head to your nearest coniferwoodland and see if you can spot any nibbled cones. If youare lucky they may come to the peanut feeder in yourgarden. It is amazing to think that this species may havebeen extinct in the mid-1800’s and, after some re-introductions, its population sky-rocketed so much that in thelate 1800s and early 1900s there were squirrel hunting clubsall over the Highlands to control their numbers!
