Fashion and CarsIt is often observed that movie stars make a fashion statement ‘on screen’ not only with their outfits, but also their cars. I’m sure you will recall the ‘movie moment’ when a black Limousine pulls up and the door opens to re-veal an impeccably dressed lady getting out of it wearing a red satin gown. Suddenly there is a barrage of camera clicks and flashes of light, a hand reaches out to the lady who gently takes it. She is then escorted into a ballroom by a handsome guy who smiles and whispers into her ear, ‘Hi, I am Commander Bond from the Secret service’.

Bonding with Cars

When it comes to James Bond’s movies, his cars were as famous as ‘agent 007’ himself. Ofcourse they were more than just a fashion statement; they were the means to achieve his highly volatile goals. Our favourites are the BMW Z8 from ‘The World Is Not Enough’ and the Aston Martin DB5 from ‘Casion Royale’.

I don’t remember any modern day movie in which the lead character’s car doesn’t complement his or her costume. Clothes and automobiles indeed are like two intertwined strands forming the DNA of modern day fashion.

A Tasteful Blend

The past century has seen more time and resourc-es being devoted to designing of apparel and cars than other consumer goods. When automobiles and clothes combine, they not only reflect the person’s taste or personality, but also his or her financial status. As a result people consider cars to be an extension of their personality and make sure that they express themselves choosing the right ones. We talked about movies and stars, but what about fashion designers? Read on...

Ralph Lauren Car Collection in Paris

There are many car collections in this world, but only some of them really stand out. What if the collector himself is an iconic fashion designer? Yes I am talking about Ralph Lauren and his car collection. A selection of his most prestigious sports cars dating back to the 1930s were on view for the first time in Europe at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, with the ex-

hibit running (28 April – 28 August, 2011). There were seventeen outstanding cars put on display, outlining important chapters in European auto history. The col-lection housed some of the industry’s biggest brands emphasising the fact that an automobile is also a major art form: Bentley, Bugatti, Alfa Romeo, Jaguar, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, and last but not the least - Ferrari.

These ‘art forms’ have been collected over many decades, by this legendary designer in his quest for speed, beauty and perfection. The collection has models such as the Ferrari 250 GTO (1962), Bentley (1929), the Mercedes 300 SL (1955), Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa (1958), the Jaguar “D type” and the ulti-mate jewel - the Bugatti Atlantic (1938). All these models stand for the ultimate in luxury while highlighting the evolution of technology with impeccable style on the road.

Talking about fashion, we can’t miss Victoria Beck-ham can we?

The former Spice Girls star has cemented her status as an automotive designer after winning an award for her luxury Range Rover model. She was previously appointed as a creative consultant for the interior of the upscale Evoque Range Rover. She had earlier told that she was looking forward to the collaboration, and added that she didn’t know where to start.Victoria’s design of the vehicle however, has taken car experts by surprise and she has been named as ‘Top Gear’ magazine’s ‘Woman of the Year’ for her work. What a debut!

Versace Laced Lamborghini

When we are talking fashion, we speak ‘in terms of’ Victoria Beckham – but what is about cars? Of course, it is the one and only Lamborghini - an ultimate dream car. This Versace laced Lamborghini was unveiled at the 2006 Paris Motor show. It featured a customized all-white exterior and a matching white interior. The trademark Versace Greek Key design is clearly vis-ible on the soft nappa leather seats as well as on the exterior on the Mucielago LP640.

Hermes Bugatti VeyronWhat happens when a leading fashion house gets its hand on the world’s fastest car? The Hermes Bu-gatti Veyron was unveiled at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show. The French design house well known for its top of the line handbags and clothes created nothing short of a masterpiece. It has a maroon coloured ex-terior with beige bonnet, that matches the interior and comes with twenty-two inch special edition rims and Hermes fuel-filler cap.

While manufacturers are flooding the market with new cars, we are sure that fashion designers are not far behind. It’s just a matter of time before they come out with ‘the best of both worlds’ yet again. We are wait-ing...
