Thank you for your continued interest in the Institute for Learning inRetirement (ILR). It has truly been a pleasure to head-up and grow thiswonderful program.

Did you know that the program is in its 18th year?

In mid-March 1999, the ILR opened with 20 courses and now it offers 50-60 courses each semester. The courses cover a broad range of academicand cultural topics taught by dedicated instructors who are passionateabout the courses they teach.

LocationThe ILR office is located in the Technology Education Center building (TEC),Room TEC115. The TEC building is next to the Pitkin Education Center(Pitkin), main building. ILR courses are held in various classrooms on allcampuses.

Classroom locations are posted daily in Pitkin at the Welcome Counter by theStudent Center entrance and the IT Help Desk by the Public Safety area aswell as outside room TEC115. There is also a recorded room assignmentmessage updated every Sunday afternoon, call (201) 447-7156 then press 2.

ILR RegistrationRegistration will only be available online beginning Wednesday,February 7, 2018 at 10:00 am. Visit www.bergen.edu/community/institute-for-learning-in-retirement and click on Course Offerings andRegistration then follow the prompts to register. Payment is by credit cardonly. The Spring 2018 membership fee is $125.00.

Course DatesThe ILR is in session on days that the College as a whole, is open. Some ofthese days are holidays.

As a student, you have the responsibility to check your calendars for holidays,other important dates, and conflicts in your schedule, before choosing yourclasses each semester.

Once course dates are set it is difficult, if not impossible, to change them.Please use your discretion in choosing classes.

ID Card All returning members who would like to update their ID Card, should stopby TEC115 to receive a new semester sticker.

Cafeteria – BCC cafeteria (Pitkin Building, 2nd Floor) is open Monday toThursday 7:30 A.M. to 6:00 P.M.; Friday 7:30 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. Dunkin’ Donutsis located in the Student Center (Pitkin Building) and is open weekdays 7:30A.M. to 8:00 P.M. and Saturday 7:30 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Hours vary duringholidays and break weeks..

Dental Hygiene Clinic – This on-campus program is open to ILR memberswith a Student ID card. Call (201) 447-7180 for an appointment. There is aminimal charge for this service.

Fitness Room and Swimming Pool – Schedule and Medical Release formsare available in the Office of Health Service room HS 100 Pitkin. You mustcomplete a Medical Release form and return it to room HS 100 to receive amedical card before you can use the facilities. You must also present yourStudent ID card.

Sidney Silverman Library – ILR members may borrow items from the BCCLibrary by presenting their Student ID card at the desk.

We will learn about the artist and their different techniques, and then wewill paint and draw from one of their works of art. Some of the artists wewill explore are: Edward Degas, Johannes Vermeer, Edward Munch andDiego Rivera.

A Non-Military History Part 3: The Paris Peace IR-728Conference & Its Continuing Geopolitical ImplicationsThe final semester in the three-part "Non-Military History of The Great War"will examine the ill-fated Paris Peace Treaty and its century-long–and on-going–impact. The Great Depression; World War II; the 1970s Oil Embargosand today's Middle East Crisis can all be traced back to the disastrousdecisions formulated at Paris by Woodrow Wilson and his British and Frenchcounterparts. Air Force in World War II IR-580The class will study the B-17 Bomberand P-51 Mustang fighter militaryaircraft of World War II. Themesinclude Billy Mitchell, The SpanishCivil War, Memphis Belle, and the BigWeek Offense. A viewing of thedocumentary film Target for Todayfeaturing combat footage of 8th AirForce attacks on Nazi Germany in1943 will be shown. The class willlearn how Lieutenant Louis Feingoldescaped capture with the help of theFrench Resistance after his B-17 wasshot down over occupied France.Feingold’s story is told by his son.

Digital Cameras for the Technology Challenged IR-437-002This course is for those who have a digital camera but do not know how to useit. You’ll learn how to set up your camera as well as how to download, organize,and get your images printed. Course content is excerpted from front-page headline news and currenttopics of concern and interest in the United States, France, or globally. TheFrench news media offer an outsider view of America. They report manyproblems and challenges that the United States and France share in common.

A knowledge of basic French grammar and vocabulary is necessary, but“mastery” is not. Class activities and materials are prepared to increaseparticipants’ abilities to read a French language newspaper, to follow andparticipate in a discussion of current affairs in French. The classroom“climate” is informal, relaxed, supportive and friendly. **Planning for a Person with Disability IR-694Bob Romano is an attorney, who for many years taught a class on legal issuesconcerning the elderly. In this two-day class, he will discuss how to useSpecial Needs Trusts to allow the disabled to retain government benefitswhile having the benefit of the assets in the Trust. The class will include theways in which a parent can create such a trust in the parent’s Will as well asduring the parent’s lifetime. It will also include the use of such trust bypersons already receiving government benefits who may inherit orotherwise receive assets, which could otherwise result in the loss ofgovernment benefits. Finally, it will discuss trusts created by the elderly toallow them to receive Medicaid benefits for nursing home care, whilepreserving their assets for a disabled son or daughter. Exercise Your Way to Health IR-445Would you like to exercise while having fun? Come join us for a groupexercise class that is light on stress but heavy on results. Exercise your bodyfor strength, balance and even cognitive fitness. This class concentrates onupper body, core, legs, coordination, and speed. Walking, sitting and risingfrom a chair, getting into and out of a car, and ascending and descendingstairs will all become less arduous. There will be chair and standingexercises utilizing free arm movement, speed work, balance, multi-tasking,coordination, and ball/band exercises.
