Abu Dhabi International Book Fair continues its mission of supporting illustrators and the wider arts sector, building on the organisers’ belief in the importance of concordance between words and images in delivering ideas effectively to readers. In this year’s edition, the Illustrators’ and Art Corner will showcase the works of both experienced and emerging talents, reflecting the artistic vibrancy and creative diversity in the region.

With the success of the Illustrators’ Corner in the past years, the organisers are committed to the corner evolving in line with developments in the cultural sector to achieve further progress and prosperity in literature and art alike.

The Illustrators’ and Art Corner offers participants a platform from which to network and showcase their creative products, enabling every exhibitor to introduce their work to publishing specialists attending the fair.

Abu Dhabi International Book Fair continues to promote this dynamic and rapidly-growing sector by organising a variety of workshops and brainstorming sessions.

Founded in 2015, the #PicturesMeanBusiness campaign encouraging people to credit illustrators properly for their work is succeeding in the UK in ways previous protests have failed. In the digital age, illustrators are finding name recognition more and more important in getting work, yet many are left out of all publicity surrounding the books they've worked on. Meet campaign founder Sarah McIntyre and learn why this positive campaign can work, by showing how everyone benefits - writers, publishers, journalists, grown-up book lovers, teachers, children - by crediting illustrators, not only illustrators themselves. Find out how you can help illustrators face one fewer hurdle in their careers, and how you can support and celebrate the valuable work of illustrators. Bring your questions and ideas!

This year’s edition of Abu Dhabi International Book Fair aims to make poetry and literature (proverbs and adages) a source of inspiration to illustrators. Consequently, the Illustrators’ and Art Corner Competition was launched to recognise outstanding artworks that portray elements of cultural heritage.

The competition is also a progression of Abu Dhabi International Book Fair’s journey towards integrating different creative fields, making content more relevant to contemporary audiences.

Participants of all nationalities should draw inspiration from Arab poetry and the works of poetess Ousha Al Suwaidi (Fatat Al-Arab), who has been chosen as the Focused Personality of Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 2019. The competition will also focus on the ‘Year of Tolerance’, with organisers encouraging illustrators to seek inspiration from poetry and literary works that promote acceptance and solidarity.

COMPETITION-RELATED CONSIDERATIONSFor professional artists, the best illustration inspired by Arabic and Emirati poetry and literature will receive AED 3,000 and a commemorative plaque.

Striving to involve the local community in its activities, and encourage students and amateurs to get involved in the arts, Abu Dhabi International Book Fair is also offering an Amateurs category, with the winner receiving an AED 2,000 prize and a commemorative plaque.

COMPETITION CRITERIAThe Judges’ Panel comprises a select group of experts in the field, as well as representatives of the steering committee. Submitted works are rated as per the following criteria:1. The work’s level of artistry and its aesthetic aspects.2. The extent to which the illustration portrays the chosen poetry verse, proverb or adage.3. Technical drawing standards and finesse in presenting a self-contained illustration with clear physical or moral connotations.4. The work’s features and elements, and its significance.5. Ability to embody words using relevant styles and techniques.

AWARDINGThe winners of the Illustrators' & Art Corner Competition will be announced on the 28 of April, 11 am at the Illustrators’ and Art Corner stage.
