Current SEB Versions Tests will be administered using a Safe Exam Browser (SEB) which locks down the device, preventing the student from navigating away from the test mid-assessment. Ensure that the SEB is properly deployed and installed on all testing devices prior to initiating student testing. The ISA SEB has a unique configuration applied to it, and the ISA will only work with the official ISA SEB.

The table below lists the versions of the SEB that will be used for this year’s ISA administration.

Note: The Windows SEB (v. 2.1.3) that was used for the 2017 ISA can still be used for the 2018 ISA on Windows 7 & 8.1 machines. Windows 10 must run ISA SEB v 2.1.8.1.

Notes:

The Mac SEB did not change between the 2017 and the 2018 ISA administration

On Macs, Text-to-Speech functionality does not work on Mac 10.9 or 10.10 devices.

We recommend using the one of the most recent three versions of the OS.

The iOS secure browser application did not change between the 2017 and the 2018 ISA administration.

Important Note:


If you are installing a newer version of the ISA Safe Exam Browser (SEB), it is important to remove all vestiges of previously installed SEB instances. If prior year or separate test configurations are not removed, students will not be able to start their tests.

Windows 7, 8.1 & 10

Installing/Running in a Managed Environment: MSI

File Name: ISA_SEB_Win_2018

Please Note: This version will be available as a standard MSI file for distribution by customer system and configuration management administrators

1. In order for the MSI file to install successfully, ensure that the .NET Framework 4.5 or later is installed. If it is not installed you can find the download details on the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 page.

2. Deploy SEB using the MSI and following the typical protocol

Installing/Running in a Managed Environment: EXE

(Notes: You must have administrator rights to the device to install the .exe file.) 1. Copy the file to a local drive.

2. Navigate to file in explorer.

3. Right click file and “Run as administrator”

a. Do not double-click file to install

4. “User Account Control” Popup. Click <Yes>.

5. If no Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 on machine:

a. SafeExamBrowser requires the following items to be installed on your computer. Click Install to begin installing these requirements.” Click <Install>.

b. “Downloading…”

c. “Extracting…”

d. “Installation Progress”, “Please wait while the .NET Framework is being installed.”

6. “Welcome to the Install Shield Wizard for Safe Exam Browser”. Click <Next>.

7. “License Agreement”. Click “I agree …” radio button and then click <Next>.

8. “Ready to Install the Program”. Click <Install>.

9. “InstallShield Wizard Completed”. Click <Finish>.

10. Starting the SafeExamBrowser

a. Unless directed otherwise, the SEB will be saved to the standard program folder

on your computer. Start the SEB by searching “Safe Exam Browser” in the Start

Menu and select Safe Exam Browser.

b. Note: If any prohibited processes are running, then the system will display

“Permitted or Prohibited Processes Are Running” dialog box. Click <OK> to start

SEB.

Notes:

Use CTRL+Q to shut down SEB. Admins will need to use the following password to safely shut down the SEB: 472317

The Windows SEB (v. 2.1.3) that was used for the 2017 ISA can still be used for the 2018 ISA on Windows 7 & 8.1 machines. There is no need to install an updated version if ISA SEB v. 2.1.3 is already installed on student testing devices.

Mac – SEB for 10.9

Note: Different versions of the Mac SEB are required for OS 10.9 vs 10.10+. Please verify that you are using the correct .dmg file for your device.

Installing/Running in a Managed Environment

1. Version will be available as a PKG/DMG distribution package for Apple Macintosh systems that can be deployed via standard methods for that platform including configuration management tools designed to manage OS 10.9+ fleet configurations.

a. Note: The DMG package includes two files, a *.zip and a *.pkg file. Double-Click the *.pkg to install Safe Exam Browser.app into the Applications folder. The *.zip file contains the same content as the *.pkg, but is for fallback purposes only should the *.pkg install fail.

2. Download Safe Exam Browser .DMG

3. Open downloads directory in the Finder

4. Double click the downloaded .DMG

5. Double click the Safe Exam Browser.pkg installer

6. Click Continue for the Introduction

7. Click Install for Installation Type standard

8. Click Close when Complete. Safe Exam Browser will be available in the applications directory

To allow MAC to open an application that has an unknown developer:

1) Click the Apple icon in upper left corner to work 2) Select System Preferences 3) Select Security and Privacy 4) Click the “Click the lock to make changes” 5) Enter your user password 6) Change the “Allow apps downloaded from:” radio button to “Anywhere” 7) Click “Allow From Anywhere” confirmation pop up

Notes:


Admins will need to use the following password to safely shut down the Mac SEB: 472317 or 87879

When launching the Mac 10.9 SEB for the test, open the “ISA_SEB_Mac-10.9_2018.dmg” package and select the following file to launch the test SEB: SebClientSettingsProd.seb

Text-to-Speech functionality does not work on Mac 10.9 or Mac 10.10. If you have students who require the use of this testing accommodation, you will need to use a Mac with an updated OS or another approved testing device.

Chromebook SEB for ISA 2018

To access the Chromebook SEB in a managed environment, schools must install the ISA 2018 app via the Google Admin Dashboard (It takes less than three minutes to install the app on all of the testing devices in a managed environment.) Check that the installed SEB states the year 2018 in the artwork to verify that you have the correct app. Note: Schools who have the ISA app already assigned to their Chromebooks do not need to install a new version. The Chromebook ISA app will update automatically with the 2018 logo.

Installation/Rollout Instructions

1. As a Super Administrator or Apps and Device Administrator, navigate to:

Device Management - Chrome Management

- Device Settings - Kiosk Settings

-Kiosk Apps

2. Check to ensure that the desired Organization/Sub-Organization is selected in the left window.

3. Standard installation - Select Specify a Custom App and insert the following information and press "ADD".

4. IMPORTANT: Select the Save button at the bottom before you exit the Admin Dashboard.

The ISA SEB will appear in the APPS section of the taskbar when the Chromebook is turned on, BEFORE log in. Note: It may take a half hour for the organizational unit group policy to update.

Installation Notes:

1. Attempting to install and run via the Chrome browser and the Chrome Web Store (on a Mac or PC) results in a red "Incompatible" warning.

2. Attempting to install via Client settings/extensions the user gets a warning (for example by downloading to a jump drive and unpacking the app on the desktop.) results in the following alert:

There were warnings when trying to install this extension: 'kiosk_only' is not allowed for specified platform.

3. Attempting to install via the browser on a managed Chromebook gets the same warnings or the "blocked by administrator" warning.

4. If the school’s Google Domain has the Apps/Extensions restriction set to “block all except what I whitelist” the ISA App may need to be whitelisted prior to installing in Kiosk

mode.


iPad - iOS 10.0+

Note: ISA supported iPads must run OS 10.0 or higher. Supported devices include: iPad Pro 12.9 inch, iPad Pro 9.7 inch, iPad Air 2, iPad Air, iPad 4th generation.

iPad Secure Exam Browser Instructions

1. Access the ISA iPad secure testing application via the ISBE.net / ISA page. The link

posted there will be for the approved app in the Apple Store. Follow the on screen

instructions to access the application.

2. Once downloaded, users will immediately be prompted to allow the application to enter

single application mode. Select Yes.

3. The secure browser will launch

4. Navigate through the assessment.

5. Shut down the secure browser by selecting the red button in the top-right corner of the

screen

6. Users will be prompted to enter an unlock code to shut down the secure browser. The

unlock code is: 472317.

7. After entering the unlock code, tap the OK button or the Done button on the keyboard to

shut down the browser

8. To relaunch the secure browser, tap the Launch button

Installation Notes:

The application is only built to work on iPads; it cannot be downloaded or used by an

iPhone

Troubleshooting the SEB

Windows SEB Installation & Troubleshooting

1. In order for the MSI file to install successfully, ensure that the .NET Framework 4.5 or later is

installed. If it is not installed, you can find the download details on the Microsoft .NET

Framework 4.5 page.

2. Deploy SEB using the MSI or EXE following the typical protocol.

If you see this (or a similar) error message, right click the file and select run as administrator to run the SEB install.

3. After the Install process is complete, you should see the following icon in the Start Menu or

Programs List.

4. When launching the SEB, you should see the SEB splash screen and the welcome screen for

the Test Driver:

5. Some Users may see this message when launching the SEB for the first time:


6. If this message is seen instead of the ISBE Learn Test Welcome Page when launching

the SEB, this indicates that the test configuration process was not completed during

the initial installation. Exit the SEB and use the following instructions to complete

the SEB configuration set up.

7. Download the Windows SEB configuration file from the ISBE ISA site.

SebClientSettingsForProd. Deploy this file to the testing devices.

8. Find this file on the testing device.

9. Right Click the filename, a. Select Open with… and then select Safe Exam Browser.

b. Or, if listed, select Open with Safe Exam Browser from the top of the right click

menu.

10. This action will apply the SEB configurations to the installed SEB on that device. After completing this action once, the SEB should open normally using the standard SEB icon.


Uninstall the 2017 Safe Exam Browser (SEB) from Windows Navigate to the Windows uninstall utility tool, using the following path:

1. Start menu 2. Control Panel 3. Programs 4. Uninstall a program

5. Search and select Safe Exam Browser

6. Select the uninstall button above the table

7. Follow the onscreen prompts to complete the uninstall process

8. Once the uninstall process is complete, you may install the current year SEB.


NOTE #1: Some users might encounter the following message or a similar error message during the uninstall process in Step 7 above. Use the following steps to complete the uninstall process.

1. Download a copy of the 2017

Windows SEB msi file. This is located on the ISBE-ISA site.

2. Save this file to the desktop and use the following file name: SafeExamBrowserISBE_PROD

3. Return to the error message and click on Browse to select the file from the local machine where it is saved.

4. Once the file path appears in the Use Source field, click OK.

5. The uninstall process will continue and complete.

NOTE #2:

Some users might find that after uninstalling that there are still items in the SafeExamBrowser folder

(C:\Program Files (x86)\SafeExamBrowser)

If this happens, you must delete the entire folder before installing new version.


Mac SEB Installation & troubleshooting

1. Open the Mac SEB dmg file. 2. Click to open the pkg file in the dmg file.

a. If you see this error prompt:

b. Use the “right-click” menu to open the pkg file. A prompt that includes the “open” button will appear instead:


3. Follow the onscreen prompts to complete the installation process.

4. After the Install process is complete, you should see the following icon in the Applications folder. If not, drag it into the application folder.

5. Click the icon from Applications to launch the SEB. a. If you see the ISBE Learn start page, the installation was successful.


b. Some users may see this message when launching the SEB for the first time:

6. If this message is seen instead of the ISBE Learn Test welcome page when launching the SEB, this indicates that the test configuration process was not completed during the initial installation. Exit the SEB and open the SEBClientSettings.seb file within the dmg file to complete the installation of the SEB configuration.

7. This action will apply the SEB configurations to the installed SEB on that device. After completing this action once, the SEB should open normally using the standard SEB icon.


Installing the Chromebook App for an Unmanaged Chromebook.

If your Chromebook is managed by your school, refer to the Chromebook installation section, not this page.

Turn on kiosk mode

To change your kiosk settings:

1. If you haven't yet, sign in to your Chromebook. 2. Open a new tab in Chrome.

3. In the address bar, type chrome://extensions and press Enter. 4. Check the box next to Developer Mode. 5. Click Manage kiosk applications. 6. In the "Add kiosk application" box, enter the ID of the kiosk app.

7. Click Add 8. Click Done

To open the kiosk app: 1. Click the Launcher > All Apps. 2. Click your kiosk app. 3. Follow the onscreen instructions to set up your kiosk app.

To turn off kiosk mode after the test session(s) if your Chromebook is not managed:

1. Turn off your Chromebook. 2. Press the power button to turn on your Chromebook. 3. While the device is starting up, press Ctrl+Alt+S to interrupt the process and return to the

sign-in screen.
