Pi Beta Phi Founded april 28, 1867
Holt House Dedicated april 28, 1941
In celebration of the Pi Beta Phi Legacy at Monmouth College
FOUNDED AT Monmouth College on April 28, 1867, Pi Beta Phi was the first secret society for women to be modeled after collegiate fraternities for men. Conceived during an era when only five state universities admitted women, the bold vision of the 12 founders gave birth to a sisterhood that today exceeds 200,000 members. The historic dedication of the first newly constructed chapter house for Monmouth’s Alpha chapter is occurring exactly one year before the 150th anniversary of the founding and 75 years since the dedication of Holt House, where the organization was born.

Mary MacDill Knapheide ’35
MARY MacDILL KNAPHEIDE was a devoted Illinois Alpha alumna and lifelong advocate for the mission of Pi Beta Phi. To honor Mary’s commitment and to support the founding legacy at Monmouth College, Harold W. (“Knap”) Knapheide III and Viktoria Knapheide Wood, her son and daughter, provided the lead gift and oversaw the architectural plans and interior design for the house.
Born in Monmouth in 1914, Mary entered Monmouth College in 1932. An elementary education major, she was initiated into Pi Beta Phi, following in the footsteps of her grandmother, Lessie Buck MacDill. As the 44th initiate into I.C. Sorosis (Pi Beta Phi), Lessie served as Secunda Regina Illustra (Grand Vice President) for the fraternity in its early days. When Monmouth College banned fraternities, Lessie transferred to another college so she could continue to wear her I.C. pin with pride.
Mary’s ties to Monmouth College ran deep—her great-grandfather was a trustee and professor, and her grandfather was also a trustee. Although financial hardship caused her to leave the college in 1934 to become a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse, Mary’s loyalties to Pi Beta Phi and the College remained strong throughout her adult life. She cherished having known four of the founders—Margaret Campbell, Clara Brownlee Hutchinson, Fannie Whitenack Libbey, and Inez Smith Soule—during her years in Monmouth, and she was an active member of the Quincy (Illinois) Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Club. She was proud that Vicki became a member of Pi Beta Phi at the University of Arkansas and that Knap became the third member of her family to serve on the Monmouth College Board of Trustees.
Mary’s devotion to the Pi Beta Phi mission—to promote friendship, develop women of intellect and integrity, cultivate leadership potential, and enrich lives through community service—was reflected in all aspects of her life’s work and the raising of her family. Believing that all young people should have access to the life-changing opportunities afforded by higher education, she and her family established the Mary MacDill Knapheide Scholarships at Monmouth College.

Monmouth, Illinois
• WORKING WITH a professional interior designer, the Knapheide family attended to every detail of the house’s design, decorating, and furnishing. The classical architecture (Greek Revival/Italianate influences) gives a historical nod to Holt House, while the overall ambience is bright, modern, and state-of-the-art.
• THE EIGHT-BEDROOM, 11,000-square-f00t building accommodates 15 residents but is designed to support an active chapter of 65 to 70 women.
• THE FIRST FLOOR features a living room/library with fireplace, a dining room, a fully-equipped kitchen, a study/entertainment lounge, the president’s suite, and the house manager’s suite. The public space is enhanced by well-appointed rooms featuring traditional yet modern furniture and decor, as well as several wall exhibits and an interactive display celebrating the history of both Illinois Alpha and the national Pi Beta Phi fraternity.
• THE LOWER LEVEL pays tribute to Pi Beta Phi’s core values and Illinois Alpha’s unique history through customized wall art decorating the chapter room and entryway. Rooms dedicated for crafting and archival purposes complete this exceptional and functional space.
• ACCESSIBILITY to the facility is enhanced by entrances off of a spacious, rear parking lot and an interior elevator.
• A SPECIAL FEATURE of the property is an outdoor kitchen with a permanent gas grill under a protective pavilion.
• INITIAL PLANNING for the project began in the fall of 2013. Formal plans were unveiled in August 2014, and construction began in May 2015.
• AS OF THE DEDICATION DATE, a total of $2.7 million had been raised from a total of 53 donors.

A Message from the Chapter
The women of Illinois Alpha thank the Knapheide family and everyone involved for making this beautiful home a reality. There are no words to convey our gratitude for the generosity and hard work that brought this house to life. It is truly a home…where we can relax and enjoy meals together, study quietly, and socialize with visitors and friends. With a dedicated chapter room and plenty of meeting space, we can also unify and strengthen as a campus organization. We are honored to welcome you today, as we celebrate 149 years of Pi Beta Phi sisterhood and the first of many joyous memories to be made inside our new chapter home.
