Everyone handles these challenging emotions in his or her own way, and it is important to remember that it’s okay to grieve in your own way and in your own time. If you choose to scatter the cremated remains, you may wish to keep a portion in a keepsake or small urn, as scattering is a permanent choice. many urns and keepsakes can be personalized. talk with your arrangement counselor about the possibilities.

Your arrangement counselor can assist you with making the right choice based upon your desired memorialization option.

What type of permanent memorialization would you like to have to ensure that your loved one is secure in a place of honor?the selection of cremation does not preclude creating a permanent memorial in a cemetery or mausoleum. options for permanent memorialization include interment in a columbarium, glass front niche, ground burial, interment in a cremation garden, among many others. Your arrangement counselor may be able to help with a referral if you have not already made a cemetery selection.

the choice of cremation is very personal, and when it is the right choice for your family, it does not preclude the selection of permanent memorialization. when your family chooses cremation, there are a number of decisions you will want to consider:

What type of memorial service is right for your family? You and your immediate family members may choose to spend some private time with your loved one. talk with your arrangement counselor about your choices for a private viewing.

Do you want a Private Family Viewing? a private family viewing or service offers you an opportunity to say goodbye in a quiet setting surrounded by close family members prior to cremation. private family viewings and services provide you with special time to share memories with close family members and to reflect on the life of your loved one. many families find that this special time helps them with the grieving process, and we can create a private viewing or service in the way that works best for your family.

What kind of cremation casket or container will you choose? while an alternative container is required for cremation, you may choose from among a number of cremation caskets and containers that may suit the personality of your loved one as well as the desires of your family. the choice of container is very personal, and the type of memorial service you choose will likely have a bearing on the choice of casket or container.

What choice of memorial jewelry commemorates the life of your loved one?memorial jewelry is a type of keepsake that holds a small portion of cremated remains, a lock of hair, or other small memento. memorial jewelry may be purchased for multiple family members, and is ideal for families who wish to share portions of the remains. there are many different possible selections of memorial jewelry, from pendants to bracelets, and you may wish to choose a piece that best reflects the personality of your loved one.

Which urn and other keepsakes are right for your family?the choice of cremation means you have a number of possibilities when you are considering which urn and other keepsakes you might select. there are no right or wrong choices, but you will want to consider whether you will wish to provide a place for family and friends to visit for generations to come. consider whether you wish to:

Environmentally friendly biodegradable urns are an eco-sensitive alternative. The coral shell and journey urn are designed for water burial; they will float for several minutes then descend gracefully into the water where the cremains will be released over a period of up to 24 hours. The unity heart and white linen urn are designed for earth burial. Many families choose to retain a small portion of ashes for cremation jewelry or other cremation keepsakes.

Why do people select cremation? the reasons for choosing cremation are personal, varied and unique. some choose cremation due to geographic considerations, and others select cremation for faith-based or economic reasons. cremation for some provides the option of sharing cremated remains with close family members.

Do all religions permit cremation?Religious positions vary widely regarding cremation. some religions require it while others disallow or advise against it. others take no position at all.

Can there be a service when cremation is chosen?Yes. cremation actually provides a lot of flexibility in service options. services or a ceremony may precede or follow the cremation. talk to your arrangement counselor about possibilities.

Can we have a viewing?Yes. You may have a viewing prior to a cremation. Is a viewing important?viewing is part of many cultural traditions. many grief specialists believe that viewing is beneficial to the grief process by helping the bereaved recognize the reality of death and affords the opportunity to say goodbye.

Do we have to buy a casket?a combustible alternative cremation container is required for cremation. this container may be a cremation casket designed for cremation, including hardwood caskets. different styles are available in varying price ranges that are appropriate for visitations and ceremonies. an alternative container constructed of heavy cardboard is available for immediate cremation. consult your arrangement counselor, who will assist you in making the right decision for your family.

Is embalming necessary?embalming is only necessary if the body of the deceased is to be transported from the state or should your services include viewing or visitation prior to cremation. consult your arrangement counselor.

Over the years we have received many questions about cremation. families want to know about the personal choices and possibilities that exist for commemoration and final disposition. We have included this list of frequently asked questions in hopes that you will find it to be helpful in making your decisions and selections. Of course, you may ask your arrangement counselor for assistance at any time.

What if I don’t know yet what I will do with my loved one’s cremated remains?once the cremation has been completed, an urn for permanent containment or scattering your loved one’s remains may be selected. should there be uncertainty regarding the disposition of the remains, a temporary container may be provided.

Can we divide the remains among family members?Yes. we have medium and small urns, as well as keepsake jewelry that are all appropriate to facilitate this specific type of request.

Are cremations performed individually?Yes. only one cremation is performed at a time.

May we witness the cremation of our loved one?Yes. You may witness the cremation casket or alternative container with your loved one being placed in the cremation chamber. arrangements with the crematory must be made in advance. consult your arrangement counselor.

Is it legal to scatter cremated remains?Regulations regarding the scattering of remains vary from state to state. please consult your state’s regulations, which can often be found online.

Is it possible to bury cremated remains on cemetery property I own?many cemeteries permit the interring of cremated remains in existing space, but regulations vary. please consult with your chosen cemetery.

What is a columbarium, and what is niche?columbariums and niches are special structures designed specifically for the permanent enclosure of cremated remains. many types of spaces for permanent memorialization are available at cemeteries and mausoleums. as the size of spaces vary, please verify that the urn you select will fit in the space you have chosen. consult with your cemetery.
