planes that have been restored by the World War II Aviation Museum in Colorado Springs.

Lots of activities are happening this month. The annual Conestoga Birthday Brunch is Sunday, May 19. We

need everyone who is planning to attend to RSVP either Ray or Rex by May 12. The flyer with all the infor-

mation is in this newsletter. The Pikes Peak Potluck and Abbey Car Show is Saturday May 18 in Canon

City. Tom Thornburg, who plays in the band “Fireweed,” has invited all Studebaker drivers to attend the

annual Bluegrass Music Festival June 2 in Pueblo. Arrive in your Studebaker and get in FREE—can’t beat

that. More information is in the newsletter. Fireweed will also be playing at the International Meet wel-

come night. Speaking of the International Meet, have you registered yet? If not, the time is now. Chuck

and Dave have been running on full throttle, and it will help them to have all members who are planning

to attend get their paperwork in early.

See you on the road,

Rick

May 2013 Chapter News

The National Museum of World War II Aviation tour was enjoyed by 24 members and

guests. The guided tour of the World War Aviation Museum brought to life the importance

that aviation had in WWII and today. The tour included many restored WWII airplanes and

the tour of Westpac Restoration. Lunch and monthly meeting was held at the Airplane

Restaurant. We want to thank our hosts Pete Tetley, and Paul and Tiffany Koch.

The May meeting and potluck lunch will be May 18 at the Canon City Abbey Car Show.

Members are asked to make sure they register for the show. We will be meeting at the Wal

-Mart parking lot in Canon City before 9 a.m. so we can all park together. David Batchelor

and Iris McBride are the host: 719/784-6140

Since the last newsletter Dave Batchelor lost his father David Batchelor Sr. We want to

send our sympathy to Dave and his family. Dave Sr. was such an interesting individual and

a joy to be around.

Also, we would like to send get well wishes to Shirley Zaner. She has been having health

issues and is on the mend. Other members that are on the mend are Karen Donkle and

Trish Price.

Pikes Peak Chapter has also been assigned the responsibility of collecting items for the

Studebaker Foundation Auction which is held the evening of July 3rd. We are asking mem-

bers of the Conestoga Chapter, Western Wheels Chapter, and the Pikes Peak Chapter to

donate items to be auctioned to benefit the foundation. These items can be either Stu-

debaker related or nonrelated. The items will be collected at the Memorabilia Room which

is the Fremont Room at the Crowne Plaza. It is time to register for the 49th SDC Interna-

tional Meet— don't wait till the last minute. If you have any questions or concerns, please

contact Chuck Donkle at [email protected] or phone 719/456-2468 or David Bache-

lor [email protected] or phone 719/784-6140.

Studebaker Drivers Club – Conestoga Chapter Meeting – April 28, 2013

In attendance were 15 members and 10 guests.

Six Studebakers were parked in the lot in front of the Kirkland Museum.

Members and guests gathered on a beautiful, sunny day at the Kirkland Museum of Decora-tive Art for an arranged tour. Accomplished tour guides Shelly Blecky and Lisa Curtis pro-vided a delightful and informative narrative as they guided us through stunning collections of international decorative art, Colorado and regional art, and a vast collection of original Vance Kirkland paintings as well as artifacts from his school of art. After the hour-plus mu-seum tour, the SDC party walked to the Cheeky Monk Restaurant for a group lunch.

President Roger Zaner conducted a brief business meeting commencing at 1:30 p.m. Roger welcomed 6 guests including 4 who represented the Forney Museum. He thanked Rex Os-born for making arrangements for the Kirkland Museum tour and the group lunch.

Roger reminded all of the Cruzin’ Havana event scheduled June 15. He also updated us on Shirley Zaner’s recent health complications with his optimism that she would be back home soon. We were also reminded that next month’s event will be the annual Conestoga Chap-ter Birthday Brunch at Mt. Vernon Country Club, hosted by Catherine and Ray Petros on Sunday, May 19.

Because of the high noise level in the restaurant, Roger concluded the meeting without a treasurer’s report, or other items of business.

Respectfully submitted by John Murphy substituting for Secretary Trish Price.

In Memory of Gene Sell

Eugene “Gene” (to all his friends) Sell, 72, of Kimball, NE lost his battle with lung

cancer on Friday, March 15, 2013 in Denver. Services were held Wednesday, March

20, 2013 at the Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball with Patrick Aime officiating. A

caravan of six Studebakers followed the hearse to the Kimball cemetery. Leading

the caravan was Gene’s 1954 2-door hardtop of teal green driven by his son.

Gene was born in Sidney, NE on December 17, 1940. He graduated from the Potter

High School in 1960 and began working at the Sidney Airport. He then worked in

the oil field as a truck driver and retired from ABF. Gene had many loves in his life

including airplanes, motorcycles, and his Studebaker. But more importantly, he

loved his family and making people smile. He was a member and past President of

the Western Wheels SDC. Memorials were established to the NRA.

Survivors include his daughter Genee Sell-Jacobs of Riverton, WY; son and daugh-

ter-in-law Corey and Bambi Sell of Scottsbluff, NE; brother Donald (Bernice) Sell of

Dinosaur, CO; step-daughters Audieanne (Jeff) Dillion of Bridgeport, NE and Kamm

(Rick) Powell of Gering, NE; 9 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and nephew John Sell.

Respectfully submitted by Wanda Mowry and the Western Wheels SDC

Studebaker of the Month

My 1927 Studebaker Commander E.W.Q., 5-window coupe with a Big Six engine was a gift from my mother-in law in 1970. The car was originally purchased by Gertie’s step-father, George Beismann, in Rapid City, South Dakota in 1929. Mr. Beismann was in his 60’s when he bought the car. He did not know how to drive and would not let anyone teach him. Consequently, he did a good job of denting all four fenders over the years. One day Mr. Beismann and his nephew were on their way home from Sturgis to Rapid City when for some reason his nephew grabbed the steering wheel while he was driving and the car ran off the road and hit a post. The wind-shield was broken and the fenders and door were damaged. After retiring, I started a two year restoration on the Commander. The fenders were straightened, the door panels were replaced, the windshield was replaced with safety glass and the door glasses and back glass were tem-pered for safety. Two pieces of wood in the trunk had to be replaced, the car was re-painted and the top, headliner, and carpeting were replaced. The restoration was completed in 1992. The original seats were leather and remained in the car until Gertie and I had a small wreck in Ala-bama. The leather cracked and they were then replaced.

The Commander has won “Best of Show” at least twice and has taken several First Place awards in the pre-war category at Studebaker zone meets. It has been on the Glidden Tour at Kerrville, Texas; Stauton, VA; Mackinaw City, MI; Decatur, AL; and Golden, CO. On the Kerrville tour it won the “Best Studebaker” award. It has received a First Place Junior, First Place Senior, and First Place Grand National award from with the Antique Auto Club of America. I received an invitation to the Concourse d’ Elegance show at Lubbock, Texas in 1995. I’ve driven it in a num-ber of parades and placed it in numerous car shows.

When I received the car, it had about 8000 actual miles. Today is has about 19,000 actual miles. The Antique Studebaker Review of November/December 1998 stated this car “May be the only

survivor of this year, model, and body style.” Bill Davis
