iLecture Personal Capture Software Record the screen of your computer

If you would like to record your presentations in the comfort of your office or at home or any other location, the free iLecture Echo360 Personal Capture software can be installed on your PC or Mac to enable you to record whatever you show on your computer screen (powerpoint slides, browsing the web, running Office etc) synchronised with your voice. If you have a cheap little webcam plugged into your PC, you can also capture talking head video footage side-by-side. The software allows you to play back and also edit recordings before uploading them to the Curtin iLecture system with a click of the Publish button.

Installation Procedure

To install the software, go to the iLectures Personal Capture page http://ilectures.curtin.edu.au/pcap Download the Mac or Windows version of the software and install the software.

NOTE: Make sure you are connected to the internet and logged into JET before you install the Personal Capture software on a Windows PC as the software needs to download some 3rd party components from the web. A PC or Mac with 2GB of RAM and at least a 2GHz CPU is required for video or screen recordings.

After installing the software on your computer (just follow the prompts and accept all default choices), go to the Tools menu and choose Options (on Mac OS X choose Preferences).

Click on the Server tab and enter dbs.ilectures.curtin.edu.au into the Hostname/IP Address field as shown at right:

Using the software

Click the Start Recording button to call up the recording preview window:

Next decide whether to record just audio, or audio and screen capture or audio, screen and webcam (talking head footage).

(You may need to click the Configure button to select your microphone and/or webcam input.)

If you wish to only record talking head footage with no screen recording, you will need to click Configure to change the Video (Left) input to your webcam.

If you choose Screen Capture as one of the options, when you hit the Start Recording button the main software window will vanish and a countdown will appear. Note the keyboard shortcut to use to end the current recording:

• Command 8 on a Mac • Alt F2 on a Windows PC.

The recorded footage is then displayed in the Edit window.

If you wish cut a few seconds or minutes from your recording, drag the yellow

triangles to select the section you wish to cut

and then click the button.

You can also click the buttons to set either yellow triangle to the current

playhead position.

To undo a cut, double-click the grey area in question and the footage will appear again.

When you click the Apply Edits button, the edited sections will be permanently deleted.

Clicking My Recordings will take you to the list of all of your previous recordings on that particular computer.

Publishing your finished Personal Capture recording:

When you click the Publish button, you will be asked for your Staff ID and iLecture password (Currently this is not the same as your Oasis password – this will have been emailed to you in the Confirmation email sent when you first created your iLecture unit).

You then choose the iLecture Unit you wish to publish your recording to and click Next.

Next Click Create new lecture and then click Next.

Then click the Publish button.

Allow approximately 15 minutes for the recording to become available in the iLecture system. Dual video recordings take significantly longer to process. You will receive a notification email once your recording is available.

If you will be recording talking head video with a webcam without any screen recording, make sure you go to the iLecture Booking Page (see p. 4) and choose Video as your preferred video format before clicking Publish.

Or, if you will only be recording the screen of your computer, make sure you choose Screen Recording on the iLecture Booking page (see p. 4). If you will be recording dual-video (webcam and screen side-by-side) or audio-only, then this setting is not important.

Trouble-shooting

If the Personal Capture software fails to recognize the microphone or webcam on your Windows PC:

• Make sure you are connected to the internet (and logged into JET if on campus) and run the Personal Capture software installer again.

• Make sure you have installed drivers for your webcam or microphone if necessary • Make sure the microphone is not muted (Logitech webcams may set the mic to mute by default) • If installing in Vista ensure you Right-click on the EXE installer file and select 'Run as

Administrator' (Note: the Administrator password for the local machine is required) when installing the software.

• Quit any unnecessary programs to make sure as much memory is available as possible.

Self-Service Uploads Upload your own recordings directly from your desk

If you have recordings on your PC or Mac computer such as mp3 audio files or video clips from off the web or copied off a video camera or iPod, you can upload them directly into the iLecture system and have the result available within 15 minutes or so.

NOTE: You need to have Java installed on your computer to access this function. The latest version of Java is available at: http://java.com/getjava/

Log into the Staff Tool off the main iLectures Web page (http://ilectures.curtin.edu.au ) using you Oasis username and password. The list of all the units you have access to will then appear:

Click on the unit name you wish to add a recording to. The list of lectures scheduled (or already recorded) in that unit is then displayed:

Click on the Upload New Recording button

Fill in the details of your recording. The Date determines when the recording will become visible to your students.

Choose what type of recording you wish to upload. Your choices include:

• Audio-only • Video • Dual Video

Dual Video is used if you have 2 video recordings that you want to play back side-by-side. It is useful if you have a screen recording of the presenter's slides and you used a video camera to record "talking head" video footage of the presenter, or if you had 2 cameras recording different angles of the same event or subject matter.

Click Trust

If you do not get a warning message or the next screen appears blank, then you need to install Java on your computer. Go to http://java.com to install it.

Click browse… and then select your audio or video file.

Then click the Upload button

Your recording will be uploaded and may take 15 or so minutes before the first format becomes available on your iLecture recordings webpage.
