I am writing this as I sit and watch the white caps roll in. There isn’t anything more soothing than the constant roll of the surf. I come to the beach to relax and renew my

spirit. Fall is my favorite time. It’s quiet, peaceful and almost deserted.

Have you ever sat and watched the tide? How it comes in and takes a little part of the sand back out with it. Have you looked at the large body of water in front of you and wondered what’s on the other

side. Perhaps someone or a whole new world is waiting on you.

There is another wonder of nature at this time of the year. The monarch butterfly is on its annual migration to Mexico. They stop over in this part of world as they head south. Can you imagine taking a journey

on such small wings?

I’m having a milestone birthday soon and therefore I’m taking time to reflect. Life is very much like the ebb and flow of the tide. We rush around trying to complete a task, job, or assignment and then we collapse. This cycle is repeated many times in our lives. Maybe we are

doing things we enjoy or just doing things that need to be done.

The Friends have been very much a part of the ebb and flow of my life. I have seen some great swells within this organization and some smooth flows. Murder Goes South is one of the great successes of the

organization. There is more information about the upcoming Murder Goes South included in this issue of the Link. Our Art & Display cases are another. I hope each of you take the time to come see each display as they change. The last, but not the least of these swells is our Link newsletter. Michael Seigler has always commented that we have one of the best he has

seen. Well, we continue to try and make it better. I hope you like it as much as I do.

Please let me know what you think about The Link. My email address is

[email protected].

The smooth flows are your membership, your website and your board of directors and volunteers. Over the years I have watched the board of directors and volunteers assume their

responsibilities with care and enthusiasm for the Smyrna Public Library.

In the spring, I will be retiring as President and a new phase of the Friends will begin. Even during the ebb and flow I’m always thrilled when someone tells me how much they love the library.

That is the one constant ... The love of the Smyrna Public Library.

This time I have an eclectic selection of books I have been reading. Most interesting and informative was The Preacher and the Presidents about Billy Graham and his relationship with the presidency. I found Younger Next Year by Chris Crowley & Henry S. Lodge, M.D. to be thought provoking and giving me a nudge. For women who like a light read I found a new (to me) writer - Susan Wiggs. A friend gave me My Grandfather’s Son, A Memoir by Clarence Thomas a must finish on this trip. I also have several books of our Murder Goes South writers stacked up to

read in the next few weeks.

I tend to introduce everyone to the latest gee-whiz services available from the Library, but am not as good at providing the details on how to get to them. That puts the burden on Library users to find out for themselves if a new service is something that might interest them. In this

column I'm going to give you an overview of a database available remotely from the library.

MyLibraryDV (MLDV), which I talked about in my last column, is the world's first video-on-

demand service aimed at public library users. Programming is divided into seven areas:

MOVIES: Available movies include classics like Angel & the Badman and The Phantom of

the Opera as well as independent films from the Film Movement series and foreign films.

COOKING: There are over 90 cooking programs featuring world-renowned chefs including Julia & Jacques Cooking at Home, Julia Child's Kitchen Wisdom, America's Test Kitchen, Lidia's

Italian-American Kitchen, and Michael Chiarello's Napa.

TRAVEL: MLDV has over 100 exciting programs featuring exotic locales and interesting vacation destinations, including Rick Steves' Europe and Globe Trekker, the most watched travel

series in the world.

HEALTH: Over 50 informative programs, including Health Choices and Fitness On Demand are available. These programs offer advice on common health problems and diseases, insights into holistic and scientific treatment, and

guidance for a healthy lifestyle.

LITERATURE: Literature programming includes author interviews from Author In-Depth, Author Talk and Library Journal. There are also 14 Rocketbook guides to great literature (featured titles include 1984, Beowulf and The Scarlet Letter). The Rocketbook guides are a terrific way to

find out what the author really meant.

HOW TO: This is your source for how to do almost everything. Available programs include the Antiques Roadshow, Inside the Law, Today's Homeowner, and Simple Solutions. You

can learn everything from estate planning to kitchen renovation.

CHILDREN: Four childrens series are on MLDV. Boohbah is fun for kids 3 to 6. The colorful Boohbahs live in the glowing Boohball which visits countries all over the world. Caillou is an adventure featuring a 4-year old and his cat Gilbert. Liberty's Kids (ages 7-12) is about two young apprentice reporters attending famous historical events. Cyberchase teaches

children 8 to 11 math and logic skills with exciting cliff-hanger endings.

All this programming (over 500 shows) is available free 24 hours a day. All you need is a Smyrna Library card, a broadband Internet connection, a PC with Windows Media Player, and a username and pin. You'll be off and running in no time. The usernames and pins with setup instructions are available from the Reference Department. Try MLDV today and let me know what

you think.

Best wishes for a joyous Holiday Season from all of us here in the Library.

the event is scheduled to conclude at 4:30 p.m.

“Murder Goes South” is truly a unique event, not only for the metro Atlanta area, but also for the southeast region of the United States. “There are only a handful of events like this across the country,” stated Evans. “This festival started out as a Third Thursday program and included four southern mystery writers. We wanted to create a special adult program for the Smyrna Library and the first one was so well received that we were inspired to do it again and make it a little bigger. In fact, a number of the featured writers at our past Murder Goes South events have gone on to greater prominence, so we feel comfortable that programs we have offered have been of good quality and value to

the attendees.”

In addition to Karin Slaughter, the Friends of Smyrna Library has confirmed these 12 authors:

The Friends of Smyrna Library has announced the dates and the participating authors for its sixth annual “Murder Goes South” southern mystery book festival for authors and readers. The event will begin the evening of Friday, January 25 and continue the day of Saturday, January 26, 2008 at the Smyrna Community Center. Thirteen authors will be on hand for the event which features Atlanta’s best selling author Karin Slaughter, whose most recent book is titled Beyond Reach. Registration for the event is $50 for two days and $30 for one day. Members of the Friends organization are eligible for a discount. For more information, please contact the library at 770-431-2860 or

visit friendsofsmyrnalibrary.org.

“We are so pleased that best selling author Karin Slaughter will be with us as the featured speaker for our sixth annual Murder Goes South event,” stated Linda Evans, president of the Friends of Smyrna Library organization. “Our program is especially strong this year, as we have 12 other established Southern mystery writers whose various works capture the history, beauty and tradition of the South. Our diverse program includes Dr. Bill Bass, one half of the Jefferson Bass writing team well known for their Body Farm novels. We even have a few authors who specialize in vampire novels, so from a mystery perspective we think there is something

here for all tastes. ”

“Murder Goes South,” a two-day event, starts Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. with a dinner for all registered participants at the community center and will feature Karin Slaughter as a guest

speaker.

On Saturday, registration takes place at 8:30 a.m. and the event begins at 9:00 a.m. The schedule will be full of activities for everyone. Lunch is included with the registration fee and

Earlier this year, the Friends of Smyrna Library donated two laptop computers to the Smyrna Library to provide additional computer availability for patrons of the library. Over the course of 2007, the laptops have been checked out over 950 times as of October 31. "Part of the charter for the Friends organization is to help enhance the quality of services the Smyrna Library is able to offer its visitors," stated Linda Evans, president of the Friends of Smyrna Library. "More and more people come to the library to take advantage of the internet as well as to use traditional office software such as word processing, spreadsheet and database applications. These laptop computers help to ease the demand on the other desktops that are in the library, and based on the usage figures we are convinced this was a worthwhile program to invest in to help our library." The Smyrna Library has wireless capability to access the internet and the laptops are wireless enabled. In order to check out a laptop a user must have a valid Smyrna Library Card and also leave a form of ID at the main desk. Laptops can be checked out for a period of one hour at a

time. The laptops are HP510s running Windows XP with Microsoft Works, a basic office application that offers simple word processing, spreadsheet and database capabilities.

“I've participated in Murder

Mr. Sorrells. "I think there's

than almost any similar event.”

The Friends of Smyrna Library will be hosting the sixth annual Murder Goes South Southern mystery book festival on January 25 and 26, 2008 at the Smyrna Community Center in the Smyrna Village. A number of writers will be on hand, including Atlanta’s best selling author and

the event's featured guest Karin Slaughter. Her most recent book is titled Beyond Reach.

Another accomplished writer, Walter Sorrells, from Atlanta, will be making his fourth appearance at the Murder Goes South festival. His most recent thriller for adults, Blind Fear, appeared this year under his pseudonym Lynn Abercrombie. The Friends of Smyrna Library are

hopeful for an even larger turnout than last year, which was one of the largest in its brief history.

The Friends have focused on growing the event each year, and year after year its reputation has grown across the region. This festival and events like it are unique opportunities for readers and writers to get together in a casual forum. "I always enjoy them," stated Mr. Sorrells. "Writing is such an inward experience, it's nice to get out in public with it sometimes. It's

also fun to hang out with other writers, as well as readers."

"In this age of major newspapers cutting their book sections, I think it is especially important for local communities to do all they can to promote reading," stated Ms. Slaughter. "Festivals like this give families the opportunity to spend the day together as well as to meet some of their favorite authors. I find it very rewarding to see successful festivals like Murder

Goes South bringing together readers and writers."

The Murder Goes South festival has many different aspects to it. It offers panel discussions, workshops and casual interaction among writers and readers alike that can truly enhance a reading experience. "Anytime you get together a group of folks who are passionate about reading, it's going to be an exciting time," observed Ms. Slaughter. "I love meeting my readers and talking to them about my stories. It's especially important for me to do this in my hometown, because we need to bring up Georgia's literacy rate. It's appalling that we have given the world so many great writers, yet we're not even in the top ten list of the most literate states. The South

should be leading the way, not lagging behind."

In addition to the various mystery topics that will be discussed over this two-day event, these book festivals in general also create an easygoing forum for writers and readers to get together and learn more about each other. "I love meeting my readers and talking to folks about books," stated Ms. Slaughter. "It's really the best part of my job, because at heart I am first and foremost someone who

loves to talk about books--whether they are mine or someone else's."

The audience at Murder Goes South will have plenty to talk about, as 13 authors will be on hand and many of them have written a new mystery in the last year. There should be no shortage of

conversation.

Murder Goes South is now in its sixth year and enthusiasm for the event continues to grow in the region. "I've participated in Murder Goes South several times and it's always been fun," stated Mr. Sorrells. "I think there's more "bang for the buck" here than almost any similar event. There are always good

speakers and high quality panels."

The Murder Goes South event is also unique to the greater Atlanta metro area since it is the only one of its kind here. For Southern mystery writers, and especially for local authors, the Atlanta market market has its positives and its negatives. "My books are generally situated in Atlanta, and I'm sure I'm read more in the south than elsewhere," stated Mr. Sorrells. "Atlanta readers love books by local authors. But the local media is not so fabulous about promoting local authors. There are lots of good writers around town, but you wouldn't know it from reading the local press. There are a couple of people like Don O'Briant who have

done a good job of spotlighting locals, but that's about it."

“The informal atmosphere of

the Reading Group gives

readers the opportunity to voice

their own opinion of the book.”

The Friends of Smyrna Library Reading Club has announced the featured topics for January and February 2008. On January 8, the group will discuss "Beyond Reach," by Karin Slaughter. The synopsis is: Unlike most of her family, Lena Adams did not succumb to a life of drugs or crime. She left home and became a cop. But when she returns to her home town to help her uncle, Lena finds herself accused of

murder.

Don’t miss the opportunity to meet international best selling author Karin Slaughter. She will be the Dinner Guest Speaker at this year’s Murder Goes South on Friday January 25,

2008 at 7:30 p.m.

On February 5, the group will discuss "A Team of Rivals," by Doris Kearns Goodwin. The synopsis is: William Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln were presidential rivals in the election of 1860. Lincoln’s win over them earned him their scorn since he was considered an obscure,

backwoods, Illinois lawyer. Yet despite their distain for him, Lincoln made the unprecedented move of persuading his rivals to join his administration. And what’s more, the three men accepted positions in his cabinet and worked collectively to see this country through one of its

darkest periods in history.

The Reading Group meets each first Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the upstairs meeting room (unless otherwise noted) at the Smyrna Public Library. The group was formed in 1993 primarily to give readers a chance to share ideas and thoughts on literary works of the present and past, fiction and non-

fiction.

The informal atmosphere of the Read-ing Group gives readers the opportunity to voice their own opinion of the book. Book selections are made through recommendations from the group members. These selections are posted both on the Friends website and inside the

Smyrna Library. Everyone is welcome to attend.

For those of you who want to learn more about American literature but don't want to spend hours and hours doing meticulous research on such a broad subject matter, the

Smyrna Library has a resource for you.

The Oxford Encyclopedia of American Literature is a four volume reference collection by Jay Parini that gathers and summarizes in detail literary practices within the United States from colonial times to the present day. It is an attempt by the author to provide a comprehen-

sive discussion on our literary heritage.

In the words of the author, "It includes discussions of individual authors, notable texts

and literary movements and institutions to name a few. Within the articles, readers will find reliable surveys of the lives and the works of most well-known American au-thors from Anne Bradstreet through other notable figures such as Longfellow, Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman and Hawthorne. Readers will find that "major" authors have been thoroughly examined in essays by leading scholars. This project testifies to the astonish-ing diversity and range of writing subsumed under the heading of

"literature" within our national borders."

The Friends of Smyrna Library recently hosted a book sale as part of the Jonquil Festival in the Village of Smyrna Library. When the sale was over, the book sale team confirmed that the event generated nearly $2,400 and was even more successful than the last one held in the Spring. Money generated from Friends book sales are used to help fund the many programs the Friends sponsors

over the course of the year.

"Jim Wooten and his team did another great job in preparing for this book sale," stated

Linda Evans, president of the Friends organization.

"Our book sales are a key opportunity for the Friends to generate income to help fund the many things we do for the library. These sales are also a way for readers to find deals on a wide range of books. As our sales numbers indicate, we offer a great selection of material and you cer-tainly cannot beat the prices. I also want to thank all those people that donate books for these

events. You can see the impact you have."

The Friends host two book sales each year and also sell books at some of the other func-tions it hosts. Books are also on sale daily in the library. If you have a moment during your next visit,

take a look at the inventory. You never know when you'll find deal you can’t miss.
