EPISODE 101: THE SMART HOME

SMART HOME TECHNOLOGY IS SUPPOSED TO MAKE HOMES SAFER, EASIER AND MORE FUN.

BUT IS THE TECHNOLOGY BECOMING TOO MUCH FOR THE AVERAGE HOME TO HANDLE?

JUSTINE CUTS THROUGH THE CLUTTER TO FIND OUT WHAT’S WORTH IT, AND WHAT WE ARE BETTER OFF WITHOUT.

ADVENTURE #1: TOP OF THE LINE TESTING LAB

In a world full of “smart” home protection devices, NEST is leading the pack.

The wireless portable camera can be put anywhere, letting you see your home when you’re away from home from any mobile device. It will even notify you if it sees an abnormal movement or home when you’re house is supposed to be empty. The thermostat saves energy & money by

learning what you like and automatically adjusting the temperature in your house. Warm in the morning & cool at night? After just a couple of days of using it, it will automatically adjust to your preferences with having to lift a finger. The NEST fire & CO alarm doesn’t just alert you when

there’s a problem, but also speaks to you, telling you what & where the problem is. “Heads up, there is smoke in the kitchen”. Perhaps one of the most innovative aspects of NEST is that the technology can work together. For example, if the fire alarm senses a fire, the camera will automatically

start recording a clip so you can see what happened.

Behind all of this great technology is … well … more technology. iJustine gets a hard-hat tour of the NEST top-of-the-line testing lab where she can get a hands-on look at the process behind the products. There’s a wet room to simulate high pressure spray & rain, a 20KV lightening strike

simulator, a corrosive gas chamber, a 2-million-dollar smoke room that allows the ignition of several different types of fires, and so much more.

In this never-before-seen segment, we get a glimpse into the copious amount of testing that goes into making our lives, and homes, a safer place!

AT HOME SEGMENT: COOKING WITH CAVIAR

Justine loves to pretend like she knows her way around the kitchen, but this new gadget – the Imperial Spherificator – can actually make her look like a pro!

As strange as it sounds, this nifty little device can turn any food into tiny, caviar sized pearls. Onion & vinegar pearls for oysters, tomato pearls for mozzarella discs, mint pearls for a mojito, tabasco pearls for chicken --- this device can do it all.

Before the Imperial Spherificator, turning food into tiny pearls was reserved for the professionals. But now, the crazy chemistry & technology is available to any at-home chef.

Justine & Jenna get down & dirty in the kitchen, turning everything they can into pearls. Is it as easy as it looks? Or does it turn into a total disaster??

ADVENTURE #2: THE WORLD’S SMARTEST HOME

Walk into any electronics store and you’ll see an entire section devoted to “smart” homes. Smart home technology is trending, and for good reason. It makes our lives easier, our homes safer, and our days more efficient.

The possibilities for smart home technology seem endless. Lights that adjust according to the time of day. Window shades that go up & down with the touch of an iPhone. Doors that know who you are & unlock without having to use keys. Doorbells that can show you who’s at your door when you’re

not even home. The list goes on & on…

With so much upside, it’s easy to see why the market is growing so quickly. But with so many products out there, it’s hard to keep up! Today, Justine is on a mission to cut through that confusion when she visits the world’s smartest home. In a walk & talk tour, she’ll show us all of the cool gadgets &

features that the house is equipped with. But the fun will really begin when Justine gets to spend the entire day “living” in the smart house. Will the technology trip her up? Or will it make her life a lot easier? Do her days become more efficient? Or does

LIFE HACK: HIDING THE ROUTER

7

Whether you have a smart home or a normal home, chances are, you have a router. And, chances are, that router is somewhere incredibly visible. But now, there’s a solution to hide the little black (or white) box - with a set of dummy books! Like magic, the

unsightly box is gone.

Page 8: iJustine Series Creative 101515

LIFE HACK: BATTERY CHECK

8

It’s the age old question. You found some batteries in your junk drawer, but are they dead? Or do they still have juice? To check if batteries are good or bad, drop them onto a table from a height of 6 inches. If they give one small bounce and fall to the right, the

battery is good. If they bounce around any more than that, they are dead or on their way out.

Page 9: iJustine Series Creative 101515

LIFE HACK: CORD STORAGE

9

You keep your house spotless, but behind the TV it looks like an electronics store exploded. Tired of the tangled wires? Plastic hangers are a great way to store & control cords!

EPISODE 102: TECHNO-TRAVEL

TRAFFIC IS TERRIBLE, BUT IS TECHNOLOGY-DRIVEN TRANSPORTATION WORSE?

JUSTINE SETS OUT TO LEARN ABOUT THE NEWEST TECHNOLOGICAL TRENDS IN TRANSPORTATION TO FIGURE OUT IF THE NEWEST PRODUCTS ARE ACTUALLY MAKING LIFE, AND GETTING FROM POINT A TO POINT B, EASIER.

Page 11: iJustine Series Creative 101515

ADVENTURE #1: THE SELF-DRIVING CAR

11

The idea that you can crawl into the back seat, kick back, and drink some bubbly as your self-driving car chauffeurs you around town sounds like a scene straight out of a science fiction movie. But that’s exactly what companies across America are aiming to do. Google, Mercedes-Benz, Tesla and Audi are in an arms race to develop the first self-driving vehicle. Even startups like Cruise Automation and Auro Robotics are trying to get a piece of

the pie.

Justine and Jenna will put the self-driving car to the test when they compare it to a “normal” car. Is it safer? More fun? Does it live up to the hype?

AT HOME SEGMENT: THE DRONE OBSTACLE COURSE

Do a quick Google news search and you’ll find about 8.4 million articles on drones. Everyone’s talking about them — they are the hottest new controversial topic — mostly because the technology is growing faster than Washington can regulate them. And to be fair, how can you regulate a

technology when you don’t even know what direction it’s moving in?

There’s the good — drones can be used to more quickly deliver everything from goods, to internet, to mail, to medicine.

But there’s also the bad — near-collisions with planes, delivery of illegal goods, or invading others’ privacy, to name a few examples.

In this at-home segment, Justine tries her hand a piloting a drone. How easy is it for a novice to pick it up? Then, she takes it to the great outdoors to experiment how much a drone can truly do by completing a drone obstacle course.

ADVENTURE #2: THE COPENHAGEN WHEEL

In a world that is becoming increasingly environmentally conscious, biking is getting more popular by the day. People are no longer just biking for exercise or for fun. They’re biking as a means of transportation - to get to school, to work, or to run errands.

Biking is a great alternative to driving. That is, until you encounter a giant hill, and if you’re biking for any reason other than exercise, you’re probably not too excited about that hill. You could get an electric bike, but those are expensive & very clunky. One company set out to find an even better solution - and they developed the

Copenhagen Wheel.

The Copenhagen Wheel transforms your existing bike into a smart electric hybrid, quickly and easily. The Wheel contains a motor, batteries, multiple sensors, wireless connectivity, and an embedded control system. Unlike standard electric bikes, the Copenhagen Wheel captures your own energy when braking or going downhill, and then it saves that energy in an integrated lithium battery pack. Then, the bike automatically gives you a boost when it feels like you need it. No throttle needed - the

bike uses sensors and control algorithms to determine when you need a power assist. It makes hills feel flat and distances shrink, so you can cycle anywhere.

iJustine decides to put the Copenhagen Wheel to the test, literally swapping out her old bike wheel for the new, and then tackles one of LA’s hilliest trails. Riding alongside her sister, Jenna, who has her normal bike, she’s truly able to see what a difference the Copenhagen Wheel can make! Does it make the biking experience

that much better? Or does it take away from the fun of pedaling through the great outdoors?

EPISODE 103: HIGH TECH HUMAN

TECHNOLOGY TOUCHES OUR LIVES IN SO MANY WAYS. BUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN TECHNOLOGY ACTUALLY TOUCHES US? AS HUMAN BEINGS?

JUSTINE SETS OUT TO DETERMINE IF TECHNOLOGY SHOULD LITERALLY BE A PART OF OUR BODY. IS IT HELPING, OR DOING MORE HARM?

Page 18: iJustine Series Creative 101515

ADVENTURE #1: THE ROBOTIC EXO-SKELETON

18

When you think of bionic exoskeleton suits, images of futuristic high-tech super soldiers often come to mind. Think Tom Cruise in the sci-fi flick Edge Of Tomorrow, or Ripley taking on the queen xenomorph in Aliens. While militaries across the world are certainly interested in designing weaponized exo-

suits for their armies of the future, powered exoskeletons are actually finding a much more practical niche right now: patient rehabilitation.

That’s the idea behind the full-body Ekso suits manufactured by Ekso Bionics. Originally developed to help soldiers carry heavy loads, Ekso Bionic’s suits were eventually repurposed to help victims of stroke, traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord injury get back up on their feet. Now, rehabilitation clinics

across the country have started using the company’s electronic exoskeletons to help patients with lower extremity weakness relearn how to walk.

With the help of a physical therapist, patients strap their legs into the bionic suit, as well as fasten a rigid brace around their waist. With two crutches on their arms, the patients stand up from a sitting position – and then start walking as soon as they are ready. Weight sensors in the suit perceive when the

user shifts his or her weight forward, triggering the device to make a step.

iJustine will visit one of the Ekso Centers to experience the technology in action. Not only will she try on a suit & learn about the technology, but she’ll also get to see patients who are benefiting from the bionic skeletal system.

AT HOME SEGMENT: WALK THE LINE

Drinking & driving is a hot-button issue that will never go away. And for good reason. Its seems as though every time you turn on the news, there’s another report about an accident involving alcohol. In fact, every 90 seconds, someone is injured in a drunk driving accident.

Most people drink & drive because they don’t realize just how impaired they are. But how much do a few drinks actually affect us? Justine is about to figure it out. It’s not what you’re thinking, she’s not getting drunk! Instead, she’s using alcohol impairment googles.

iJustine slaps on the goggles while Jenna administers a variety of sobriety tests. Can she walk the line? Hop on one foot? How about navigate a cone-course on a big wheels bicycle? Pick something up off of the floor?

iJustine & her fans will learn the hard way that normal tasks can become pretty challenging with a few drinks in you. Equally educational & entertaining, iJustine finds a fun way to talk about a serious & newsworthy topic.

ADVENTURE #2: TECHY TEXTILES

20

Google has a new technology that can turn virtually any type of fabric into a connected device. You read that correctly - they are developing smart clothes.

In what they’ve dubbed Project Jacquard, touch-sensitive, metallic yarns are weaved in with normal material to give it the kind of capabilities that you don't usually find outside of science fiction movies. The threads connect to chips that react to gestures, monitor heart rate or body temperature, or do whatever else a

designer might come up with.

One of the demos that Google has already showed off is a touch-enabled outfit controlling a set of Philips Hue lights. A quick tap on the clothing turned the lights on and off, while swiping left and right changed the color, and swiping up and down adjusted the brightness.

While the possibilities of smart fabric are endless (clothes that detect when you’re being pick-pocketed, a tv remote woven into the arm of the sofa), one of the most practical and exciting applications is for health. What if your pillow could track your breathing? Or if a t-shirt could monitor your heart rate without the

need for any other equipment? Or if a baby’s onesie could monitor it’s body temperature? What makes the technology so exciting is its invisibility. There's no need to wear a clunky headset or a smart wristwatch to get connected - it's essentially the ultimate in wearables.

Project Jacquard is still at the early stages, but a lot of progress has been made in a short space of time. iJustine will have the opportunity to get in at the ground floor and see / experience the technology before it even hits the shelves. Is this technology going to make our lives easier? Or is it going to make it

harder for us to truly disconnect?

iJustine loves virtual reality. What she doesn’t love is the price tag, the bulky headsets, or the crazy-big computing system that accompanies it. But with the new Samsung Gear VR system, she can kick all of that to the curb. Powered by Oculus, this lightweight & easy to use headset turns any Samsung GALAXY Note 4, S6 or S6 Edge smartphone into a portable, next-generation virtual reality system. Simply slide the smart phone

into the headset, download any of the revolutionary VR games & experiences to the mobile device, and you’re in. For only $99, iJustine now has a portal in her pocket. And because it’s wireless, she can jump into the virtual reality world whenever she wants.

So what exactly can iJustine do with this device? The better question to ask is what CAN’T she do. With Oculus Cinema she’ll have her own personal 110’ screen and theater to watch 2-D or 3-D movies at her fingertips. With Oculus 360 Videos, she can fully immerse herself in 360°

video, transported to both real and otherworldly environments including a helicopter tour, a superhero’s lair, a futuristic sports arena, or a trip back home. With Oculus 360 Photos she can stand on Mars, explore ancient Rome, or visit Paris. And, of course, iJustine’s favorite - virtual reality

gaming, where she is fully immersed in fantastical worlds & experiencing the action like never before.

ADVENTURE #2: HOLLA! HOLOGRAMS

27

Holograms have always had the potential for greatness, but the execution of defeat…until now. VNTANA is a Santa Monica based company that has raised the level of expectations for holograms to an entirely different stratosphere. VNTANA's technology creates some of the most

engaging and realistic holographic experiences in the world. VNTANA has the ability to create custom holograms that will engage and enchant anyone who comes across it.

The technology that VNTANA has created is used for education, marketing, and entertainment. The system is interactive, requiring communication between people and computers. It can produce "live" remote appearances from sometimes distant, faraway places and virtual, computer-aided concerts. Users are able to control the projected images with hand movements. Justine and Jenna will visit the facilities and have holograms made of each other. Will they be able to tell the difference between their holograms and the real thing?

LIFE HACK: STRAIGHT SHOOTER

28

Want to be better at golf without investing in hundreds of dollars of gadgets? For this hack, you only need about $2.00. Grab a sports drink at the supermarket, take off the plastic ring from the cap, and place it around the golf ball. Draw a line with a

permanent marker on the center of the ball and you can easily line up all of your putts. It’s a hole in one!

Page 29: iJustine Series Creative 101515

LIFE HACK: OPTIMIZE YOUR GAMING SETUP

29

Set ups should be comfortable. Sitting is key. Chairs should be adjustable and padded. Bringing your chair to a level that is comfortable for your wrists while playing will also make playing more enjoyable. A simple change for long term results.

Settings will also make a huge difference while gaming. If you game on a console, using your TV as a monitor will change the way you see your game. TVs tend to do a lot of processing to make the image pop, which sometimes cause lag time. Turning on the

Game Mode on your TV will help improve input times.

Fine tuning your Graphics Setting can make a huge difference to the game player. You’ll have to custom your settings to 60 frames per second, which is the maximum refresh rate of most monitros.
