W atervliet School Board approves more pay increases

Watervliet Record

OF YOUTH Take The Highroad To Adventure

The Watervliet School Board has approved a salary schedule for the district's non-unionized employees, according to Supt William Penny. Peony aaid the new salary schedule called for secretaries, teacher aides and buildings custodians to receive pay increases of between 8.S and 10 percent

The pay raises, which became effective July I, cover about 15 employees, Penny said. New per hour salary ranges (with last year's ranges in paren-theses) for the three Job categories are as follows: secretaries, |4.96 to |8.1S ($4.45 to $5.65); teacher

aides, $4J0 to 15.50 (fSJIto $5.00); and building custodians, $5.71 to $7.31 (15.11 to 11.71).

Contract negotiations bet-ween the achool board and the Watervliet district's cooks and bus diivets are continuing. Peony said. A school board committee is currently evaluating Pen-ny's Job performance and will make a salary recom-mendatioo at a later date. Pay raises for four other administrators have already been approved by the board, according to Penny. He aaid the board also previously ratified a new contract with Watervliet teachers.

Can 100,000 hostelers be wrong? Hosteling—staying at simple dorm-style lodgings where you cook, bathe and sleep, when traveling here or overseas—is letting thousands of young people see a whole new world each year for very little money. Whether you want to bicycle the hack-roads of New England, raft the white water of a mountain river, backpack along the Pacific Coast for a weekend or travel across Europe for an entire sum-mer, hosteling is the best way for outdoor lovers to beat the high cost of travel.

This year, many special hosteling tours for young people are available through a group which sponsors more than a hundred low-cost trips for small groups annually. It 's helped t o bring the hosteling concept to over 5 ,000 places in operation in 50 countries around the world, ranging f rom cabins t o castles, ships to lodges, hotels to lighthouses—all at between $3.50 and $10 a night.

The 1983 "Highroad t o Adventure" group travel brochure, available f rom American Youth Hostels, Inc. (AYH), lists more than 25 exciting and inexpensive bicycle, trekking and mini-bus tours throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia and Africa, ranging in length f rom nine days to six weeks. One example is the two-week "Salty Dog" tour. For only $390, the "Sal ty Dog"

cyclist can enjoy the warm sun, soft sand and blue sea of Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket .

For overseas bicycling adventure, there is the "Saddlebag Special" tour . This leisurely four-week trip wanders through charming English countryside, historic French vineyards and lovely Dutch villages.

Other bicycling adven-tures include tours of the sunny California coast , the Canadian Rockies, the romantic roads of Germany, Austria and Switzerland and the rugged coastline of Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island.

As a member of American Youth Hostels, you can get a number of helpful free booklets, such as t h e 1983 American Youth Hostels Handbook, listing more than 270 unique low-cost hostel accommodat ions or traveling equipment , all through the discount Store-room. You get the AYH pass, which lets you stay at any hostel throughout the world. You are also eligible for the Advance Booking Vouchers, important if you plan to use many of the overseas city o r resort hostels, for which you should book at least six weeks in advance of your arrival.

For free brochures that can tell you more about becoming a hosteler, write to American Youth Hostels, 1332 I Street, N.W., Suite 800, Washington, D.C. 20005.

The federal excise tax on spirits is a heavy regressive tax burden on consumers and the industry.
