An unidentified parachutist jumped safely offthe 110th-floor observation deck of the 1353foot World Trade Center in New York on Sep.13th, and landed safety on the ground. Hethen sped off in a waiting car.

The jump was the fourth successful stunt fromthe world's second largest building. In 1977,George Willig scaled one of the twin towers. In 1974, Philippe Petit walked a tightrope be-tween the two towers and in 1975 OwenQuinn jumped with a parachute.

CANADIAN SHOW CLOSES

The French Quebec show "Le Cirque Inter-nationale" closed three weeks earlier than itsscheduled Sept. 14th closing date. The inves-tors (a different group from that of previousyears) reportedly have suffered a loss of over$100 thousand.

American acts appearing with the circus in-cluded: Pat Anthony, wild animals; GeeGee Engesser, elephants and ponies (pre-sented by Roy and Pat Wells); The GreatHuston & Co., illusions; Tony and Irene Fos-set, boxing kangaroo and chimps, and DorisSchampacher, horse and donkey.

ONE MORE COLUMN before I take a twoweek's hiatus to assimilate all the upcomingnews from the Texas dates. The Royal Hanne-ford Circus date in Salisbury (Md) Sep. 5-6,was a Red One (played in the new Civic Cen-ter) and the date has been resigned for 1981.Acts, other than the Hanneford-owned ones, appearing on the date included The Great Hu-berto, Los Latinos, The Rolls Duo and PrinceNajvez.

STRUPPI HANNEFORD. prior to the Salis-bury date, went to New York to tape a com-mercial for T I G E R MILK Candy, a new can-dy bar. The tiger she used was trained to leapfrom pedastal to pedastal thru a paper hoopbearing the candy bar logo.Included in Hanneford's 1981 route will be

Lansing, Mich., played in March for the Car-avan Youth Center replacing the old Hospi-taler Circus which has been discontinued. Thisdate will fall just before the Moslem TempleShrine Circus in Detroit.

THE HERNANDEZ TROUPE, now at GreatAdventure, will return to that theme park forJOE BAUER in 1981, from April until Oct.They will also play the Detroit Shrine Circus(Mar. 20-Apr. 5). (Also in Detroit will be twobreakaway sway poles and three flying acts).Manuel and Lisa Hernandez say they've en-joyed their run at the Great Adventure park."It's a good way to beat the high gas prices,"they say, "and besides, it's right in the mid-dle of a lot of fun places, not to mention theocean where our boys ride the waves withtheir surfboards every chance they get"ITEMIZING: Author-Publisher JOHN Me

CONNELL, now associated with the "frontend" of Royal Hanneford, laughs to thinkthat he has joined the circus while I havepulled a switch and "joined" the publishingfield - well, it IS an unusual switch... Mus-icians BOB and KAY PARKER are back withHanneford for the fall tour.. .MACK ESH-LEMAN visited the circus at the York Fairproduced by MOFFIT and said the show wassuper. Among the acts Mack mentioned wereLill i-Ana, Herbie Weber, the Coronas, theZamperlas, the Vidbels, and Dime and Con-nie Wilson. Mack, along with EARL MICH-AELS are now in Texas.. .The Emmett Kel-ly, Jr. Circus did excellent business at theCarter-Beran Amphitheatre in Washington,DC, over Labor Day, so reports Herbie Weber.

Acts at the Atlantic National Exhibition forBetter Booking out of Boston were: MC Ar-nold Archer, Billy Earl, vent, Helena Duo,perch, The Bertinis, bikes, Bonnie & Clyde, musical comedy and Angela Wilnow's collies. Also on for a one day shot was country-wes-tern star KITTY WELLS.. .SENOR RAI whovisited recently with ANGELA LANSBURYreports the star is doing the road tour ofSWEENEY TODO, having just returned fromEngland where she essayed the role of MISSMARPLE in AGATHA CHRISTIE'S "THeMirror Cracked". Also in the film are Eliza-beth Taylor, Rock Hudson, Kim Novak andTony Curtis. Lansbury was aged for the partand should be a first-rate Miss Marple.. .Myneighbor JEAN STAPLETON played thatold-lady sleuth in a production of "MurderAt The Vicarage" at the Totem Pole Play-house only a few miles from my home. .MAEWEST has recovered from a mild concussionsustained when she fell out of bed a monthor so ago. Mae, who had a birthday in Aug.,is now 88 (or 89 depending on who is count-ing). . .Rai also visited with ALEXIS SMITHwho is doing the road tour of 'W-House inTexas'.

READER'S CIRCLE: MARC OLDEN, au-thor of "Gossip", an original paperback, has anew book out, "The Book of Shadows". Ifail to understand why this clever author hasnot been released in hardcover. His new bookis a first-rate thriller, fast-paced, pulse-quick-ening. I only wish he'd stop using so manyfour-letter words which I (and many readers)are growing tired of. There ARE other waysof getting one's point across) Anyway, it's agood book, put out by Charter, so pick it up.

GERARD SOULES, back from more thaneight months in South America with an iceshow, has signed the fall and 1981 tour withRoyal Hanneford. It's the first time I've seenJerry's dog act in ten years and it's excellent. All the dogs stand on their hind legs perfect-ly erect and he has a number of specialty dogsthat are a sensation, especially the Can-CanDog whose paws hold the dress and actuallycan-cans! The act is a show stopper, no doubtabout it, and features original ideas. Jerry us-es only poodles, starts off with a straight dogact combining several clever and fast tricks, before going into the specialties.TIDBITS: FRANK CURRY escorted JUNE

CIRCUS INT'L FAREWELL PARTY

BY ROBERT LEBLANC

Sunday, Aug. 24th, 8 p.m. was the last showfor the 1980 season of Cirque Internationale, the end came three weeks earlier than was ex-pected.On Aug. 23rd, a farewell party was given un-der the big top and I was invited with my fa-mily to attend.Fernand Brouillette who is the main ownerof the circus, gave a speech explaining thatdue to the lack of patrons it was better toclose the circus rather than go on and be-come bankrupt.A special show was given for all the person-nel. In that show Pierre Jean who was ring-master on one of the Gatini units last year, sang a few songs and made a few imitationssuch as Popeye and Olive, etc.The Great Huston was playing the drums andHanns Raedler was at the organ. RaymondMullin (Ray the clown) also sang, then Rancho'the Gypsy sword swallower and fire eater gavea show, by the way he will be with the KingBros. Circus as of the middle of September. The whole show ended about 3 a.m. and itwas enjoyed by everyone. Gee Gee Engessersold the two elephant-skin puppies to JeanOe Rome and Raymond Mullen, so they willtravel with them this winter.Leo Ouplessis the other owner of the circuswas unable to attend the party since he hadbeen recently hospitalized fora heart attack.

CATCHING THE SHOWS

BY ALLEN BABCOCK

We had a busy Labor Day weekend here in Il-linois with several special events, all of whichattracted large crowds of people. One of thebig features was the Ringling Red Unit, play-ing Springfield (Aug. 29-Sept 1).This was the first time in 33 years the Ring-ling show had come here and so there was alot of interest in all of their activities. Theyplayed in the Convention Center which willseat 54,400 people. The opening night wasa sell out and for the rest of the performancesthe show drew 80% or better. The train arrived at 11:45 p.m. on Aug. 28,coming in from Des Moines, and was put ona siding for the unloading. Since there wasno show until the following night they delayed unloading until 8 a.m. The runs were IV?miles from the building. After the last show the tear down moved a-long smoothly. About 11:10 p.m. it startedto rain and by midnight was coming downreally heavy. That poor train crew got soak-ed before the train was loaded. An NBC-TV film crew was with the circus, filming for a documentary which they saidwill be aired Jan. 2,1981. They took a lotof footage of Gunther Gebel-Williams andespecially the "animal walk".Some of the visitors I saw at the Ringlingshow were: Mike Sorrel), Vernon Richardson,Norman Schuler and Bill Backstein.

Last month I had a nice visit on three shows- Hoxie Bros, played Oak Park, Circus Vargaswas at Hillside and Carson & Barnes were justa few blocks away. That was Aug. 23rd andall three shows were within six miles of eachother.

The TNT & Royal Olympic Circus was plagued by the heavy storms that swept acrossthe state of Minnesota during August. Showpersonnel were caught in the middle of astorm while enroute from Minneapolis toEau Claire.Sometime later they had to hook up trailersand make a run into a shopping mall truckcourt to escape from 80 mph winds. On Aug. 12th, a storm struck the show dur-ing its Peoria, III. stand. However, there wasno immediate damage.

CHESSINGTON ZOO CIRCUS CLOSES

BY JACK NIBLETT

For a large portion of the 49 years in whichthe Chessington Zoo Circus has been in exis-tence, Gilbert's International Circus, has beenin residence. Now with the Zoo (about 20 mites from Lon-don) being taken over by a new business or-ganization, it has been decided that this yearwill be the last of these annual Summer Cir-cuses, and the show was due to close on Sep.7th.Gilbert's Circus is owned by Mrs. Emily Thom-pson (nee Paulo) and her son Bill, and theprogram is made up mainly by members of theThompson/Paulo families, and designed primarily for the younger zoo patrons. The show which lasts about 75 minutes andplays twice or three times daily, this year in-cluded: Overture and introduction by Mrs.

Emily Thompson (ringmaster); Gilbert's Li-berty horses; Palomino Pony and Guanaco;Performing Geese; Miss April, vertical rope;Mademoiselle Yolanda, trapeze; Pigeon actby Miss June and Miss April; Clown Brunoand his Children's Band; Foot-juggling byMiss Yolanda; Dressage display by Miss June;Riding Machine with audience participation.During the war years, despite heavy bombingraids, the Chessington Zoo Circus carried onand even produced a stage version of the showwhich played at London theatres and at ArmyCamps. At this period several famous Europ-ean circus artists were connected with thecircus including the celebrated horse trainerCzeslaw Mrowcovski (Charlie Moroski), wholater left these shores to be with Ringling Br.Barnum & Bailey Circus. The passing of this show is sad, and much re-gretted by the Circus Fans who always had asoft spot for this charming family circus, par-ticularly so as it means that the circus willnot now be able to take part in the Zoo's50th year celebration.

HOXIE BROS CIRCUS

BY KEN HOLEHOUSE

Hoxie Bros. Circus rolled into Park Forest, III.on Aug. 30th, the day after Franzen Bros, hadplayed to two straw houses in adjoining ParkForest South and a couple of days before thewidely publicized Circus Vargas set up in anearby shopping center. Business was not toobad for them, though, considering that ParkForest and the south suburbs of Chicago be-came a paradise for circus fans that particu-lar week.Hoxie has come through some hard timesthis year. Slowdowns now find them usingan old Beany-Cole tent and the loss of twofine acts, the Loyal-Repensky duo and WaltStimax's chimp act, which has left the showwith no animal acts except the concludingelephant display. Although a lone camel anda team of ponies were staked out in the backyard, they never made it under the big top atthe show I saw.A torrential downpour delayed the start ofthe 4 p.m. performance and, apparently,

completely eliminated the circus march andparade that has always opened this show inthe past. One gaping hole in the top of thetent kept a steady stream of water pouringdown in front of the center ring throughmost of the first half of the show and a num-ber of people decided to stay home ratherthan brave the bad weather.

But the show went on and, although I missedthe animal acts and some of the other top at-tractions that this show has featured in pastyears, Hoxie Bros., is still good circus andoffers the fan and spectator some fine enter-tainment.The members of the multi-talented Campasfamily gave us a number of acts including thejuggling Les Dubois girls for an opening act.The girls return on the single strand for aparallel display and then join young JuanCarlos for a fast paced unicycle act. Thewhole family gets together for a musicalnonsense routine after intermission.Another highlight of the show was the LisnerDuo. As usual, their controlled, carefully ex-ecuted maneuvers on the aerial perch werecelestial poetry. The Hoxie elephants responded well to theirnew trainer and closed the show with an upbeat, varied display.

FROM WILLIAM WOTSCH

Reading about the death of Duncan Renatdobrings to mind the time that he (The CiscoKid) and Leo Carillo (Pancho) appeared atthe Cleveland Arena in a rodeo, around 1957or so.The floor was covered with dirt and we hadour usual cattle wire around the hockey fenceThe Cisco Kid in his dark western outfit andPancho, wearing that Mexican hat, rode allaround the arena floor as the kids werescreaming their names. After the performance the kids would lineup for autographs in front of the arena.Bothof the men would sign their names and havefun talking with the kids. It was obvious thetwo men liked children.Even in the evenings after they left the arenathey'd put on little western skits at the localeating places. They would wander in, shakehands with the people and do little fun andgames things. Everyone certainly enjoyed itand I think the feeling was mutual. Now, both are gone, but their fans will al-ways remember them. Of course, in 1956the Cisco Kid was featured with the ClydeBeatty Circus.

MILLETTE AMATEUR CIRCUS

BY BOB STODDARD

The 8th annual Millette Amateur Circus tookplace on the Mattock Day Care Center lot inMesquite, Texas, on Sept. 6th.Handicapped children from ten special schoolswere invited and, for the first time, senior ci-tizens attended from several nursing homes. The show was performed in the two pole red, white and blue home-made tent with one ringand two outriggers which allows for three aer-ial acts to be performed at the same time. This year, high winds furnished many prob-lems and a weak tumbuckle almost causedserious ones. All were overcome, but resultedin a 15 minute late start.A new feature added to the midway was fourcurved mirrors which added some excitementbefore the show.Free lemonade and popcorn were provided bythe Ed Millette Tent No. 5, CFA. More than300 bags of popcorn and 500 cups of lemon-ade, as well as one hundred 18" circus bal-loons were given to the small children. The show opened with a count of 340 peopleand the women on the front door said thatthey were coming in all through the show.Barbara Hunter, music coordinator, startedthe music; Loncy Leake, ringmaster, introdu-ced Rev. Victor Hunter who blessed the showand gave the invocation, and the opening spec"The Parade of Flags" was on.The first act was obviously the star of theshow - Wayne Burden, who stands on his headon a swinging trapeze - a feat first performedby Ed Millette (the tent's namesake), who was

a Dallas boy who ran away and joined the cir-cus in 1884, when he was 8 years old.Other excellent trapeze performances were byPeerless Fred Colson and a beautiful and gra-ceful performance by Shelley Birch field. Adouble trapeze act with Shane Evans on up-per and Tammy Treadway on lower traps.Harry Jenkins (who was also canvas boss) jug-gled and did a whip act with the assistance ofCindy Treadway and "oh my gosh" the clownIn retrospect, I can see that we were in for adifferent kind of treat when five "kids" walk-ed around the arena in the opening spec.Twoof these "kids" (Children) dressed as clowns, were 8 year old Tern Lynne Cromeens andher 5 year old brother Chris, who each led a"kid" (baby goat) on a leash, followed bytheir 3 year old cousin Jeff Cromeens whodragged a large mesh bag containing alumin-um cans and a large label stating "Goatfood"

No actor could duplicate the facial expressionsof this miniature, 3 year old clown, as he fol-lowed his instructions to "follow Terri andChris." The unconcerned - to blaze • to pain-ed expressions were priceless.Their act was with the goats who were sup-posed to "climb up on anything". Their re-fusal to re-act as predicted and what theychose to do instead was hilarious. One bit ahole through the outside of Tern's hip poc-ket and throughout the act real goat foodfiltered out thru the hole and Terri hadtrouble getting them in front of her. When the act was over and the roustaboutswere removing the objects that the goats hadrefused to climb upon, the goats decided thatthey did want to climb on them afterall. I hes-itate to use the word to describe an act, but

An exhibition of ropespinning was presented by Geoff Cox. Theswinging ladder? featured Stephanie Cox,Elizabeth Hunter, Kay Burke, Lisa Birchfieldand Lisa Plunk. The tumblers were Kay Bur-ke, Elizabeth Hunter, Lisa Plunk, Lisa Birch-field, Janice Hendricks and Tammy TreadwayThe closing spec "Salute to Children" with aspecial band arrangement of "Jesus Loves theLittle Children" with all of the small childrenfrom the audience who were dressed in clowncostumes and had clown make-up on singing"Jesus Loves Me/' was a moving experience. The front door was handled by Mary Lee asa greeter in ringmaster costume. Elaine Cro-

meens was in charge of the popcorn and le-monade with helpers Lou Flowers Stoddardand Betty Leake.Tommy Randolph was the official photo-grapher. The combination roustabout-canvascrew, who put the tent up and down andback in the bam, was headed by Bill Hooper, and included Harry Jenkins, David Evans,Herman Pease, Jim Decker, Bob Stoddard,Jeff Cromeens and Vanus Walker. The above names belong to the people whoseaching backs could barely muster enough com-bined strength to close the bam doors whenthe last piece was put away at 10:15 p.m. Theydon't remember much about the following daybut they do remember that they'd new couldhave made it without the help received fromTroop 108, Boy Scouts of America, Mesquite,Texas, under Scoutmaster Wayne Meeker.
