The Editor

Introduces

It seems I announced

my resignation as editor

a little too soon.

It seems finding a

successor is proving a little more difficult than

I had hoped, so I’m still in the chair but David

Learmonth has been a great help in doing the

type setting and helping with the layout for

this edition. Thank you David. However I fear

we won’t be able to keep going indefinitely,

which does place a question mark over the

future of Interface.

But for now this edition still has that superb

mix of news, articles and events for you to

enjoy.

I really enjoyed selecting the photographs to

go with our Wizz Kids report on pages 8 and

9. What can be better than lots of smiling

faces. More smiling faces at the friendship

club as they ventured to Bury St. Edmunds.

Keep those pictures coming, and make use of

Interface to share your news at least for the

next few months.

Dear Friends

About lying

In a recent

conversation with

someone buying a

house they mentioned the disappointment

of finding out that others involved in the

transaction had lied to during the

negotiating process. Apparently this is not

uncommon.

Now I must admit in hearing this I was

silently ‘tut tutting’ to myself thinking ‘of

course I would never do that, I don’t lie…

not really’

The ninth commandment says, ‘you shall

not bear false witness against your

neighbour’ – don’t lie.

Of course that includes not saying things

that are untrue when you are selling your

house but it also means…

I twist no one’s words.

I do not gossip or slander.

I do not join in condemning anyone without

a hearing or without a just cause. Rather,

in court and everywhere else, I should

avoid lying and deceit of every kind.

I should love the truth.

I should speak the truth candidly.

I should openly acknowledge the truth.

I should do what I can to guard and

advance my neighbour’s good name.

Mmm....

Do you ever reinterpret a story to benefit

yourself or purposefully reconstruct the

facts to make a point?

How easy it is to assume the worst about

those I don’t like or don’t know, especially

people who seem bigger than me

(athletes, politicians, celebrities), unlike me

(different faith, different colour, different

politics), or far from me (in physical or

relational distance).

How challenging it can be in pressure-

packed moments to speak the truth

candidly and openly acknowledge it. How

unpopular and difficult it is to guard and

advance my neighbour’s good name.

In our digital age where everybody is an

expert, analysis is instant and perpetual

outrage is a virtue, surely the breach of the

ninth commandment is one we all need to

pay special attention to.

Best Regards,

Bible Society was established in 1804 by a

group of people including William

Wilberforce and Thomas Charles to

encourage the 'wider circulation and use'

of the Scriptures.

They are still working on this mission

today.

They believe that the Bible is an

extraordinary collection of books, worth

reading and part of the solution to today's

big issues.

They make Scriptures available where

there are none, help the churches use and

teach them, and promoting the Bible

through the arts, education, media and

politics.

Bible Society is working to circulate the

Scriptures across the world, in the church

and through the culture just like air

conditioning circulates air through a

building.

The strategy of Bible Society centres on

Bible availability, accessibility and

credibility.

It’s what they call the ‘lifecycle’ of the

Bible.

Ten percent of the church income is

given to a range of charities.

Each is featured here monthly

and on a board at the church.

This month it is the turn of :-

HOLY CROSS CHURCH

NEW COMMUNITY HALL

It has been a long summer waiting for

the final approvals to start work on

building our new hall, but by the time

that you read this, these should have

been received and the builders will be

on site.

The first step will be to erect a

perimeter fence (marked red on the

plan), to contain the building work

within the permitted area, secure the

site and materials overnight and at

weekends and prevent people straying

into the middle of the building work.

The perimeter fence will also help

protect any nearby gravestones, with

any excavation work taking place a

minimum of one metre inside the

fencing. Any particularly

vulnerable graves will be

individually protected.

On the section of fencing

to the left of the main

door of the church we

will be erecting the 8

metre long mural that

Felsted School Art

Department kindly

painted earlier this year

to depict the School’s

450 year association

with the Church and the

Community.

Then will start the all

important job of

excavating the

foundations. Soil investigations

indicate that should be a relatively

straight forward operation and, whilst

any digging will be closely monitored

by our archaeological and

arboricultural advisers, investigations

earlier this year fortunately showed

this area to be free of both

archaeological items of importance

and significant tree roots.

It is our intention to take regular

photographs as the building work

progresses and we will be posting

these on the Church’s website under

the News section at http://

www.felstedchurch.org.uk/#/

Jesus is the only

way of salvation!

Wizz Kids was held from Tuesday 12th to

Friday 15th August in the Memorial Hall,

Felsted for Primary school age children.

We used the TNT Ministries package –

God’s Zoo.

The children learnt about how Adam & Eve

had turned their back on God and why the

only way we can be rescued is through

God's plan of salvation. They learnt about

how Noah listened to God and trusted Him

and how God rescued him. The children

learnt about their need for a Saviour and

were introduced to Jesus as the only way

of salvation.

The children enjoyed

singing action songs and

watching the puppets,

Rosie, Wizzy and Bird.

The crafts and

worksheets echoed the

theme of the day. There

were also crafts as well

as games, snacks,

memory verses and

wake up activities.

On Sunday 17th August

there was a Wizz Kids

service at 11am in the

Memorial Hall where the

Wizz Kids were able to

share what they had learnt

with their families. The

children received their

certificates and everyone

sang action songs. The

service was followed by a

picnic lunch for everyone.

Thank you to all our

amazing helpers who make

Wizz Kids so much fun for

all the lovely children who

attend.

The next Wizz Kids event is

currently being organised and will be

advertised on the church website.

Opening of The Memorial Hall by Robert Stone

Dicky Howett recently emailed me copies of some postcards that had been given to the

Memorial Hall committee and

wondered if I knew what the

event was and when it took

place.

I was pleased to be able to say

that the picture was of the

official opening of the Hall

which the Essex Chronicle of

29th February 1924 reported

took place the previous Sunday

afternoon (24th February 1924)

and that the Hall was opened

by the High Sheriff of Essex,

Major Guy Gilbey Gold.

The Hall was then handed over

to a management committee in

March 1924. I guess that

makes this year its 90th

Anniversary.

Keep up the good work folks.

Felsted Memorial Hall by Hazel Fox

Hello everyone,

I do hope you've all had a good summer.

It hasn't been bad for weather has it? Let’

s hope it continues into the Autumn.

The Memorial Hall is now resuming

business as usual. FKS is back for the

Autumn term as are the Brownies and our

regular hirers.

The Farmers Market has returned too.

Have you been to one? There is some

delicious produce. I totally recommend it.

They will have come back to a freshly

painted hall with nice clean (and fire

proofed!) curtains.

I think I mentioned last time that the lights

are being done at half term. It's like

painting the Forth Bridge isn't it!

You'll be pleased to hear that rehearsals

for the Panto will be starting later in

September. If you are a regular at our

shows you will see some new faces. (What

have they let themselves in for!) We are

still in need of a musical director, so if you

play the keyboard and have experience in

that area, we would love to hear from you.

Just give me a ring on 01371 820108.

Speak to you all in a month, 'til then..

‘Shrine of the king,

cradle of the law’

On 14th August the Felsted Friendship

Club members enjoyed a day out at Bury

St Edmunds – where the barons gathered

to persuade King John to sign the Magna

Carta in 1215.

We approached the town passing the

Sugar Beet Factory and Greene King

Brewery as the rain cleared. Members

visited the colourful abbey gardens

complete with ruins of the 11th century

Benedictine Abbey, specially designed

sensory and herb gardens, aviary and

tame squirrels. Those who visited St

Edmundsbury Cathedral with its stunning

millennium tower received a warm

welcome and explanatory leaflet to this

magnificent building.

After a delicious lunch in the Cathedral

Refectory we exited to a short sharp

shower complete with thunder and

lightning! The pedestrianised shopping

areas and narrow lanes with their

interesting mix of shops were tempting for

those wanting a spot of retail therapy. The

coach journey back took a route through

the country lanes providing a restful end to

a busy day.

The following day a group of our

housebound members who are unable to

join our coach trips were treated to an

afternoon cream tea at The Swan in

Felsted – an amazing spread of goodies

and pleasant conversation was enjoyed by

all.

The Felsted Friendship Club annual Bring

& Buy Christmas Coffee Morning is

scheduled for the morning of Saturday 1st

November in Felsted Memorial Hall – a

date not to be missed. We hope to meet

many of our members, supporters and

people of Felsted on this occasion.

Donations are always most welcome.

The Felsted Friendship Club meets at the

Memorial Hall on the 3rd Friday of each

month, 2.15 – 4.15, if you would like to join

us as a guest or potential member we’d

love to see you.

This month we have our

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING,

at the United Reformed Church Hall

Thursday 16th October –

starting at 8pm.

The committee would be delighted I’m

sure to see some fresh folk who might help

running our club. This is a good

opportunity to contribute views and ideas

to maintain or improve your Garden Club.

Refreshments and social gathering to

follow

We’ve had some good long days getting

the garden into reasonable shape through

the late summer. Over the bank holiday

weekend, an area where our decking used

to be, has been entirely cleared and a

friend and ‘Adam’ set about digging it over

one morning. Four hours later, we

completed the task – I say we; he finished

the job, at about three and a half hours in,

it had me beat. I’ll say this for gardeners –

no need to go to the gym! Later in the

week, trimming the back hedge, another

late summer chore, got done. And you

just ‘feel’ a bit better for having done it.

In the kitchen garden our spuds have

taken blight this year. We grow a selection

of mainly early varieties which have done

well. The general perception is that this

has been a ‘good’ summer – yet we have

had a little less rain than two summers

ago. M most would agree 2012 was a wet

and pretty awful summer. Just shows

perhaps how misleading statistics can be.

Having watched our potato crop succumb

brings me to the complex matter of

modern crop protection and world history.

Why?

Travelling around Galway this July, the

many stories, tributes and memorials

about the Great Famine (An Gorta Mor)

left a deep impression. Many of you will

know or heard about of the Irish potato

famine of the mid eighteenth century.

Some five to six million folk lost their lives

or emigrated to the Americas in a period of

ten years between 1845 and 1855. It’s

true, the farmers and their families relied

totally on potatoes for food and peat to

burn for heat in winter. Such ‘monoculture’

was with hindsight a demonstrably

precarious business. Had these farmers

been able to spray copper sulphate or

‘bordeaux mixture’ to prevent the fungal

blight (causal agent Phytophthora

infestans) this catastrophic famine and its

devastating effects on the Irish people

might have been avoided. Health issues

and environmental concerns aout crop

sprays would appear insignificant in

contrast with the millions, literally, of Irish

folk who suffered starvation.

Working as part of a modern food

production system, the simple perception

is that crop protection technologies, from

the breeding of more robust cultivars to the

development and application of plant

medicines are mankind beneficial. Why

would they not be so?

October should see us finish our potatoes

and then we’ve a few leeks to enjoy later

on. I like to get a good proportion of the

kitchen garden dug over this month

weather permitting.

Hey ho, enjoy your gardens into the

autumn!

‘Minecraft the Musical’ Drama Camp

Felsted Preparatory School played host to

a wonderful drama camp this summer led

by Mr Mark Allder, Year 3 Teacher.

Budding young actors were challenged to

rehearse and perform the world premiere

of ‘Minecraft the Musical’; a new and

exciting production based on the popular

computer game.

It was an intense week but everybody had

lots of fun and it culminated in a fantastic

performance for family and friends on the

Friday afternoon. Mr Allder was

immensely proud of the children and is

looking forward to seeing them in the West

End or even Hollywood when they have

become stars of the stage and screen.

Also taking place over the summer were a

Football Camp, Netball, Hockey, Swim and

Multi-Activity Camps.

This Autumn Half-Term will see drama,

netball, swim and rugby camps, further

details of which can be found at

We Will Remember Them by Robert Stone

When the first World War started local men

and women rushed to enlist and do their

part, and whilst most would need training

before going to the front, there were a few

Felsted men who were already regulars,

and went with the British Expeditionary

Force to France and Belgium.

Amongst them was Walter Smith, who was

Private Solider 7664, with the 1st

Battalion, the Northamptonshire Regiment.

Walter Smith was the second son of

George and Jane Smith. He was born in

1887, and the 1891 census for the family

shows them living next door to the Mill

House at Cock Green:

George Smith, 30, Journeyman Miller,

born Felstead.

Jane Smith, 31, born Gt. Leighs.

Annie Smith, 11, born Gt. Leighs.

Percy J. Smith, 8, born Felstead.

Edith K. Smith, 6, born Felstead.

Walter Smith, 4, born Felsted.

Arthur Smith, 6 months, born Felsted.

In 1901 Walter was living in Stebbing with

Edward Bentall, and working as a Grocer's

Apprentice. Walter didn’t much like the

Grocer’s life and by 1914 was a regular

soldier with the Northamptonshire

regiment.

Walter married Mabel E. Cotton in the

January of 1914 in the Romford

registration district.

Walter was killed in action on 11th

November 1914 during the first Battle of

Ypres and having no known grave is

commemorated on the Menin Gate

Memorial at Ypres.

After the war his widow Mabel E. Smith

lived at 126 Glenny Road, Barking, Essex.

Walter was the first of the local casualties

of the war. He would not be the last, and

for George and Jane Smith further

sadness would follow. George’s older

brother Percy John Smith who was also a

regular soldier, and died in 1917.

Another brother Ernest, born in 1892, was

also killed in 1916, whilst serving with the

Royal Garrison Artillery in France.

The sadness of the war must have been

hard for George and Jane Smith, as their

other son Arthur was also a soldier. He

was a regular soldier with the Essex

Regiment and was injured whilst the 1st

Battalion were at Gallipoli in 1915. Luckily

he survived the war. Our picture is of

Arthur in his hospital blues.

New Medical Equipment

As reported

As reported last month, two new

examination beds have recently been

supplied to Felsted Surgery. The article

should have also included a mention of the

contribution made to this equipment by

Felsted Book Sales, who joined Felsted

Women’s Institute and Felsted United

Charities in providing the much

appreciated funds.

A Defibrillator has also been funded for the

village also by Felsted United Charities.

And Finally..Lawn Care from D. Gregory

GOD: Francis, you know all about

gardens and nature. What happened to

the dandelions, violets, milkweeds and

stuff I started eons ago? I had a perfect

no-maintenance garden plan. Plants that

grow in any type of soil, withstand drought

and multiply with abandon. The nectar

from the long-lasting blossoms attracts

butterflies, honey bees and flocks of

songbirds. I expected to see a vast

garden of colours by now, but all I see are

these green rectangles.

ST. FRANCIS: It's the tribe called the

Suburbanites. They started calling your

flowers 'weeds' and went to great lengths

to kill them and replace them with grass.

GOD: Grass? But, it's so boring. It

doesn't attract butterflies, birds and bees;

only grubs and worms. It's sensitive to

temperatures. Do these Suburbanites

really want all that grass growing there?

ST. FRANCIS: Apparently so, Lord. They

go to great pains to grow it and keep it

green. Each spring they fertilize the grass

and poison any other plant that comes up

in the lawn.

GOD: The spring rains and warm weather

probably make grass grow really fast.

That must make the Suburbanites happy.

ST. FRANCIS: Apparently not, Lord. As

soon as it grows a little, they cut it.

GOD: They cut it? Do they then bale it?

ST. FRANCIS: Not exactly, Lord. Most of

them rake it up and put it in bags.

GOD: They bag it? Why? Is it a cash

crop? Do they sell it?

ST. FRANCIS: No, Sir, just the opposite.

They pay to throw it away.

GOD: Now, let me get this straight. They

fertilize grass so it will grow. And, when it

does grow, they cut it and pay to throw it

away?

ST. FRANCIS: Yes, Sir.

GOD: They must be relieved in the

summer when I cut back on the rain and

turn up the heat. That will slow the growth

and save them a lot of work.

ST. FRANCIS: You aren't going to believe

this, Lord. When the grass stops growing

so fast, they drag out hoses and pay more

money to water it, so they can continue to

mow it and pay to get rid of it.

GOD: What nonsense. At least they kept

some of the trees. That was a sheer

stroke of genius, if I do say so myself. In

the autumn, the leaves fall and form a

natural blanket to keep moisture in the soil

and protect the trees It's a natural cycle.

ST. FRANCIS: You better sit down, Lord.

The Suburbanites have drawn a new

circle. As soon as the leaves fall, they

rake them into great piles and pay to have

them hauled away.

GOD: No!? What do they do to protect the

shrub and tree roots in the winter to keep

the soil moist and loose?

ST. FRANCIS: After throwing away the

leaves, they go out and buy something

which they call mulch. They haul it home

and spread it around in place of the

leaves.

GOD: Enough! I don't want to think about

this anymore. St. Catherine, you're in

charge of the arts. What movie have you

scheduled for us tonight?

ST. CATHERINE: 'Dumb and Dumber',

Lord. It's a story about....

GOD: Never mind, I think I just heard the

whole story from St. Francis…….!
