Objectives

The rapid integration of the global economy powered by advances in information technology has brought innew paradigms in interorganizational relationships. Traditionally, rms have always been dependent on other

organizations for supplies, materials, and information; but in the new economy, organizations around the world

are being embedded in complex networks of relationships, collaborating at times and competing ercely at

other times, which have serious implications for organizational performance. Today, partnerships, alliances, joint

ventures, networks and collaborative systems are all concepts used to describe the variety of interorganizational

relationships (IORs) now found in corporate world. While in principle these new organizational relationships oer

opportunities to improve organizational performance, there is no consensus on when organizations should use

them, how they work or how they ought to be structured or evaluated.

Interorganizational relations include issues related to identity of involved organizations, strategic motivations

that lead partners to engage in interorganizational arrangements, governance mechanisms, temporal horizon

of relationships, and behavioural dynamics of involved actors. However, interesting as they may be, manyinterorganizational relations run a serious risk of not meeting their target objectives resulting in great nancial

loss for involved parties.

Thus, there is a need to understand how interorganizational relations can be designed and strategically managed

for better achievement of organizational goals. This programme is designed for enabling leaders, managers,

and practitioners from a variety of rms who would like to appreciate the strategic, operational, legal, and

behavioural issues in interorganizational relations. The aim is to help managers develop an understanding of

how interorganizational relations can be successfully managed to create win-win situations for organizations and

their “partners.”

Content

The primary aim of the programme is to demystify “interorganizational relations.” The sessions will focus onrecognizing and understanding issues related to strategy, integration of operations, governance mechanisms,

and attitudes and behaviours that underlie eective management of interorganizational relationships.

In particular, the programme will focus on:

a. Issues faced by both individual organizations as well as those faced by collectives of organizations in a variety

of IORs.

b. Dimensions and attributes of both interactive and non-interactive relationships, especially issues related to

content and structure of relationships and governance mechanisms such as incentive structures and contracts.

c. Impact of both the micro and macro context on emergence, functioning, evolution, and dissolution of

interorganizational relations.

d. Processes through which IORs are established, maintained, changed, dissolved, and produce outcomes.

Methodology

The learning methods will primarily include case studies, class discussions, group presentations, and experiential

exercises. To integrate the learning, the course will end with an integrated case or practical problem-based group

presentation.
