Path 42 is a 35-mile 230kV transmission line. IID owns the portion of the path from the Coachella Valley Substation to the Mirage Substation (approximately 20 miles) and SCE owns the remaining approximately 15 miles of the transmission facility. e CAISO Board of Governors approved the upgrade of the SCE’s portion of Path 42 as a policy driven element in May 2011. IID is bearing the cost of upgrading its portion of Path 42 to accommodate the export of additional generation projects from its balancing authority to the CAISO. To date, IID has commied $37 million for this endeavor. e upgrade of Path 42 will increase transfer capability from the IID system to CAISO by approximately 900 megawas (from 600 megawas to 1500 megawas). IID’s portion of the upgrade is currently in construction with completion scheduled for May 2015. IID is in the process of implementing its Strategic Transmission Expansion Plan which will also increase the deliverability of energy from IID to CAISO at the Imperial Valley substation by another 800 megawas. SCE is currently upgrading (in conjunction with IID) its portion of Path 42 (between Mirage and Devers Substation). SCE will be upgrading its system west of Devers between 2016 and 2020 which will allow elimination of congestion and beer management for import flows into the CAISO’s/SCE’s system. NEAR-TERM Upgrade of Path 42 will increase transfer capability from the IID system to CAISO by approximately 900 megawas (from 600 megawas to 1500 megawas). TRANSMiSSiON dELivERYIn an effort to support the development of future renewable generation projects in Imperial County, IID is collaborating with Southern California Edison and the California Independent System Operator Corporation to upgrade Path 42, which is the link between SCE and IID.

Path 42 is a 35-mile 230kV transmission line. IID owns the portion of the path from the Coachella Valley Substation to the Mirage Substation (approximately 20 miles) and SCE owns the remaining approximately 15 miles of the transmission facility.

The CAISO Board of Governors approved the upgrade of the SCE’s portion of Path 42 as a policy driven element in May 2011. IID is bearing the cost of upgrading its portion of Path 42 to accommodate the export of additional generation projects from its balancing authority to the CAISO. To date, IID has committed $37 million for this endeavor.

The upgrade of Path 42 will increase transfer capability from the IID system to CAISO by approximately 900 megawatts (from 600 megawatts to 1500 megawatts). IID’s portion of the upgrade is currently in construction with completion scheduled for May 2015.

IID is in the process of implementing its Strategic Transmission Expansion Plan which will also increase the deliverability of energy from IID to CAISO at the Imperial Valley substation by another 800 megawatts.

SUMMARY OF KEY FACTS• IID’s Path 42 upgrades are well underway and will be completed by May 2015. This will increase transmission deliverability from IID to CAISO by 900 megawatts.

• The first phase of IID’s Strategic Transmission Expansion Plan 230 kV upgrades are permitted and will complete IID’s southern loop (Highline to El Centro Switching Station, El Centro Switching Station to Fern Switching Station, and Imperial Valley to Dixieland Substations) and will significantly increase transmission deliverability to the CAISO’s point of receipt at Imperial Valley substation by an additional 800 megawatts. These are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2018.

• The first phase of IID’s Strategic Transmission Expansion Plan also includes a 184 mile 500 kV line running from the Salton Sea to the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station. This line, if approved by CAISO, will be in service between 2021 and 2024 allowing for the export of an additional 1100 megawatts.
