LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
This is a very special weekend for us here at Mission Basilica parish as we hear our new Rodgers Custom 4-Manual digital organ speak for the first time at our masses. I am grateful to the Rodgers Instruments Corporation of Portland, Oregon and Dr. Robert Tall of Church Keyboard Center in Pasadena for his meticulous care in in-suring the best possible installation and sound for our new Church organ.
As mentioned in previous bulletin letters, our new instrument takes advantage of the latest digital technology to “capture” real and authentic pipe organ sounds from some of the finest pipe organs around the world. As is the case with many fine or-gans, there are five divisions of pipe sounds in our instrument, referred to as (1) The Great (2) The Swell (3) The Choir (4) The Solo and (5) The Pedal Division. There are four manuals together with the pedal board that the organist plays with her/his feet!
The individual and distinctive sounds of an organ are achieved through what are called “stops.” On either side of the keyboard are a variety of stops that when “pulled” create a distinctive sound for the specific division to which it is assigned. For instance, the organist can pull the “Flute Harmonique 8,” which is a lovely flute sound that is produced by an 8 ft. pipe. In order to create the rich and varied sounds that only an organ can produce, these stop “voices” are combined to color a particular piece of music chosen to be played. Many of the great organ composers, like J.S. Bach, would specify the “tonal palate” or the stops to be used in appropriately coloring a particular composition.
One of the unique features of digital technology is the fact that not only does our instrument have the “default” stops or “voices” to be accessed on the stops to the right and left of the console, but virtually every one of these default stops can be digitally changed by utilizing a built in sophisticated computer to “change” the stop to a slightly different tonal sound within the “family” of that stop. For instance, in the Solo division, one of the default stops is the Trompeta Armonica 8 – the “8” refers to the length of the pipe – 8 ft. When that stop is pulled, the organist can select through the internal computer, 4 additional and distinct organ sounds: Tuba Major 8, English Horn 8, Vox Humana 8 or Oboe de Orquesta 8!
If there are no pipes where is the sound coming from? A digital organ obviously speaks through speakers. Our new Rodgers instrument is speaking through a series of 28 specially placed propriety speakers devel-oped by Rodgers, a subsidiary of Roland, the world’s largest builder of digital musical instruments. Careful-ly positioned around the perimeter of the Grand Retablo are 20 speakers and three amplifiers. These speakers are positioned in such a way as to utilize the curved Apsal walls of the Basilica to “throw” the sound out into the nave area. In the Narthex or baptismal area of the Basilica, there is a high window be-hind which are 8 additional speakers and two amplifiers to create both an “Antiphonal”and a “Trompeteria” division. This Antiphonal division creates a surround sound that appropriately fills the en-tire Basilica with the additional advantage of providing organ support for congregational singing for those seated in the back area of the Basilica Nave and Narthex. On special occasions such as weddings and oth-er major feasts when the liturgical procession will enter from the great doors of the basilica, the “Trompeta San Juan” can speak from the Trompeteria Division to announce the entrance of the Bride!
The internal computerization of the instrument provides for a multiplicity of variations in tonal sound to-gether with the use of MIDI technology that, in addition to traditional organ pipe voices, captures orches-tral sounds as well that can then be combined with the pipe voices. The combinations are virtually end-less.

The Basilica Music Ministry program is seeking dedicated volunteers to be part of a thriving and vibrant music program. Each Sunday, the Basilica Mixed Ensemble provides choral music to support and enhance the liturgical life of the Mission parish community. The current 40 member ensemble sings a vast repertoire of choral music; Gregorian Chant, Renaissance Polyphony to modern master pieces. This season, we will dedicate our new Rodger's Masterpiece Signature Series organ and perform the Christmas portions of Handel’s Messiah, with orchestra to begin the holiday season. The Mixed Ensemble rehearses each Thursday evening from 7:30 - 9:30PM and sings for the 11:00AM Sunday liturgy. PREGUNTA DE REFLEXION DE LA SEMANA
Declaración de la Parroquia de la Misión
MENASJE DE LA SEMANA: Nos encontramos para renovar nuestra fe en el Señor Jesús y
nuestro compromiso de seguir realizando su proyecto, que no es otro que el proyecto del Padre: un mundo nuevo, más fraterno, más justo. Éste es el test de nuestra realidad creyente. Hemos venido a alimen-tarnos de su Palabra y del Pan de la Vida.
También en este domingo, la liturgia nos sigue brindando la oportunidad de profundizar en el mensaje del nuevo Moisés y Maes-tro, que es JESÚS. El domingo pasado se nos presentó como PAN DE VIDA, capaz de saciar el hambre de cuantos le acogen en sus vidas. Hoy vuelve a insistirnos en el tema, inten-tando llevarnos a la súplica, confiada y profunda, del relato
evangélico: “Señor, danos siempre de ese pan”. Y es que cada uno de nosotros, cada hombre y mujer, busca seguridades en la vida, porque necesita
una estabilidad para su caminar de cada día. Jesús se ofrece como aquel que es capaz de responder satisfacto-riamente a esas demandas, capaz de saciar el hambre más vital del corazón humano y de ofrecerle esa seguri-dad que necesita. Éste es el mensaje que se nos ofrece.
La imagen del maná en el desierto es prefigura de lo que más tarde el Señor Jesús ofrece a cuantos le acogen, y ofrece a su comunidad. Por eso, el apóstol Pablo nos invitará a “vestiros de la nueva condición hu-mana”, a la imagen de Cristo, renovando para ello la mente y el espíritu, convirtiéndonos en el hombre nuevo que nace del encuentro con el Señor resucitado.
Aquí, en este caminar, nos encontramos nosotros, siguiendo las huellas del Señor Jesús, configurándo-nos con Él, para que llene nuestra vida y la ilumine: “el que viene a mí no pasará hambre, y el que cree en mí no pasará nunca sed”. Ahí está su oferta. ¡Dichoso quien acoge a Jesús en su vida, porque tendrá el alimento que perdura!

Queridos hermanos y hermanas,
Este es un fin de semana muy especial para nosotros aquí en la Misión Basílica ya que por primera vez estaremos escuchando tocar nuestro nuevo órgano digital Rodgers en nuestras misas. Estoy sumamente agradecido con la Corporación de Instrumentos Musicales Rodgers de Portland, Oregón y al Dr. Robert Tall del Centro de Teclados para Iglesia en Pasadena por su meticuloso cuidado al asegurar la mejor instalación y sonido posibles para nuestro nuevo órgano.
Como hice mención en previas cartas en el boletín, nuestro nuevo instrumento to-mará ventaja de lo último en tecnología digital para “capturar” los sonidos reales y auténticos de algunos de los órganos de tubo mas finos alrededor del mundo. Como es el caso con muchos de los finos órganos, hay cinco divisiones de sonidos en nuestro instrumento, son (1) Grande (2) Oleaje (3) Coro (4) Solo (5) Pedal. También ¡hay cuatro características más con el pedal que el organista puede tocar con sus pies!
Los sonidos individuales y distintos de un órgano se llevan a cabo por medio de lo que llaman “altos”. En cada lado del teclado hay una variedad de altos que cuando se “jalan” crean un sonido distinto para cada división específica y asignada. Por ejemplo, el organista puede jalar la “Flauta Armónica 8”, el cual produce un sonido de flauta por un tubo de 8 pies. Para crear estos variados y bellos sonidos que solo un órgano puede producir, estos “altos” y “voces” son combinados para dar color a una pieza musical elegida en par-ticular. Muchos de los compositores de órgano, como J.S. Bach especificaria la “paleta de tonos” o los al-tos usados para apropiadamente dar color a la composición en particular.
Uno de los rasgos únicos de la tecnología digital es el hecho de que no solo tiene los “altos” o “voces” en la derecha o izquierda de la consola, sino que virtualmente pueden ser tocados y cambiados digitalmente por medio de utilizar la sofisticada computadora integrada para cambiar el alto que dará un tono diferente dentro de la “familia” de ese alto especifico. Por ejemplo, en la división de “solo” uno de los altos es la Trompeta Armónica 8 – el número se refiere a la medida del tubo. Cuando se jala el alto, el organista pue-de seleccionar de la computadora interna cuatro (4) adicionales sonidos del órgano: ¡Tuba Mayor 8, Cor-neta Inglesa 8, Voz Humana 8 u Oboe de Orquesta 8!
¿Si no hay tubos de dónde viene el sonido? Obviamente, un órgano digital habla por las bocinas. Nuestro nuevo instrumento Rodgers habla por una serie de 28 bocinas especialmente diseñadas por Rodgers, re-presentante de Roland- el más grande y reconocido del mundo por sus instrumentos musicales digitales. Cuidadosamente, 20 bocinas fueron instaladas y tres amplificadores alrededor del Gran Retablo. Estas bo-cinas fueron colocadas de tal manera que el sonido fuera enviado hacia la nave. En el área de la pila bautis-mal, se encuentra una ventana en la parte superior en donde se colocaron 8 bocinas adicionales y dos am-plificadores para crear a la vez los sonidos de la división “Antífona” y “Trompetería”. Esta división Antífo-na crea un sonido que llena completamente la Basílica para dar la ventaja de proveer el apoyo del órgano a la congregación de aquellos que se sientan en la parte de atrás. En ocasiones especiales como bodas o fiestas mayores, cuando la procesión litúrgica entre por las puertas principales de la Basílica, la “Trompeta de San Juan” puede tocar desde la división de trompetería para ¡anunciar la entrada de la novia!
La computarización interna del instrumento provee una multiplicidad de variaciones en el tono del sonido junto con el uso de la tecnología que, adicional al tradicional órgano de tubo, capta los sonidos de orques-ta al igual que puede ser combinado con la voces del tubo. Las combinaciones virtualmente son innumera-bles.
