OUR L Y OF THE MOUNT CHURCH
Ground was broken fOl' the erection of Our Lady of the Mount Church on NovC'mber 6, 1911. The coru:l:·-ston,.. was Ia.id on Sunda.y, uly 28, tile Right Rev, Monsignor John A. O'Grady, of New BI'uns
wick, officiat:.n;r. Thc edifice is C:Ji1stl'Ucte<.l almost entirely of rough flelu stones set in c::ment, tile stones having heen gathered from the farms in the neighborhood. The corner-s~one. wc.ighing more than half u ton, was obtained frol~l an adjacent fo.rm where, exposed to sun and weather, it had been a familiar landmal'k throughout the memory of the oldest inhabitants. This stone was set in the corner in its ori ginal state with the customary lette!'s, crons and date chiseled on its face, The bUilding contnins fifteen stained ghss v.'imlows. The altar is the gift of St. John the Evangelist's Church of Dunellen through the Rev. Edward Dunphy. The pews were given by St. Joseph's Church of North Plainfield through th8 Re". William H. Miller. The property on which the building stands was deeded to thc church by Mrs. Catherin<:'
inz and her son, Alfred E. Binz.
The first Mass was celebrated December 22, the celebrant being the Rev. W. F. Dittncli, rector of SL Joseph's Church, Boune! Brook, who attended personally to the mission. On this occasion many visitors were present from NewYork, Elizabeth, Plainfield, Bound Brook ami New Brunswicl, to assist ill the ceremonies, ttl1d they were greatly impressed With the appearance of the mountainside church. The dedication exercises tool, place the following- spring.
In the beginning, Our Lady of the Mount Church was attended by St. Joseph's, Bound Brook. A few years later, its care was transfen"ed to St. - Joseph's Church, North Plainfield. Fl'om there, Fr. Campbell, now pastor of St. Joseph's Chm'ch, was assigned as the first curate to attend the church t.o continue successfully the work of the founders.
Since Fr. Campbell's return to ]\;orth Plainfield, r.1llny repairs have been made. Last December (1936) a bUilding opposite the church wa.s bought for the purposc of holding' church affairs there.
Nestling in the Watchung hills, may this Church dedicated to our dear Mother of God be a source of spiritual help to Catholics and bring men to the true ItnowJedge of God!
